  • Saw them 1st time Panther Hall in Ft Worth,Tx like 1967 & IMHO the Pigpen era with the raw energy was the best times & best sound. Dead Forever-Forever Dead!!

  • BOB Weir = underrated HE is Great and AGELESS.

  • Yeah, way too bad Pigpen had to punch out so early. His voice is such a blues/country classic. This is the first video I've seen of Pigpen in action.

  • This shit blows the Black Crows out of the water. Great stuff.

  • How come I never heard this. I really should listen to more early dead. This is fucking awesome.

  • Jerry aside, i'd have to say that Pigpen is without a doubt my favourite member of the dead, guy could really sing and play the harp!!!

  • jerry's smile! all worth it

  • I was reading a post in a Beatles forum about Psychedelia and the fact that the Beatles musically were about a year behind what was happening in San Fran which I totally agree with. What was amazing , there were pages of posts about bands like The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane etc being the premiere psych bands out of America and I was amazed no one even gave a thought to the band that really started it all.

Ahh well, thought I would share that.

  • Looks like Phil Spector in the purple shirt @2:28

  • Okay, sooo... the 15 people who "DISLIKE" this video are officially relieved of their ears.

  • @asabovesobelow222 to dislike this my friend i dont think they had any ears to begin with *grins!*

  • i dont care i dont care lets go you and me nature i dont care

  • Does anyone know what logo that is on the back of Pigpen's shirt? It's hard to see, but it almost looks like a Chicago Blackhawks logo.

  • RIP Bear you legend of LSD! good choice btw x

  • Damn! Was Bobby really ever THAT YOUNG?! :-) Bless the BOYS

  • @wolfkarel Look at pictures from 66=67. People (that didn't know him of course) thought he was girl.

  • RIP Mr Pigpen!!!! U left us with ur great music, and for that we thank you!!!!!!!!!!! \m/ keep on rocking!!!

  • Ron & Jerry

  • Ohhh Jer....♥

  • GD did the best version of this song.

  • Low volume....best vid but dang that low volume.

  • shit i should see more jam bands; i guess i liked them more than i thought :)

  • RIP Pig....literally the oldest looking 24 year old in human history.

  • @mikper7 Hahahaha, scary true

  • my new most fav ver of this song

  • the dude in the red wife beater is hilarious

  • great post

  • RIP Pig

  • Originally an Otis Redding song, but still sweet.

  • If there is a better version of this song. I haven't heard it.

  • @bigdog7668

    Otis Redding's version

  • @bigdog7668 The Black Crowes version. : )

  • @madmartigan4077 if you prefer the fag crowes version please please please go away and listen to justin beeeiber or whatever the hell his/her name is.

  • @IGotMineKeysBlack Aaawwww, you're just so damn cute when you're trying to piss someone off. : D

  • otis allday

  • Brilliant..!

  • Worst version EVER....

  • wow watching jerry's face during his solo/jam is far out man.. you can just see the music moving him...

  • 3:14 ~ 3:20 makes my soul smile!

  • Come back, Pigpen, and bring Jerry with ya!

  • @klock656 LIke a steam locomotive running down the track he's gone.. and nothing's gonna bring 'em back.

  • this has been up here for years

also you expect to see more people at the show

i guess everybody left the stands

    STILL AWESOME

  • a prefer a soulman, listen instead to Otis Redding original version

  • these color videos of the dead make me realize that these times aren't ancient. in fact it really wasnt even that long ago

  • no pig - no dead

  • @jwindyboy brent is great and i think he is very sexy also and pigpen was a great musician, everyone has their own opinion.

  • pig is hot shit but jerry in his prime defined what it means to play from the heart.

  • @c0smickk They both had a lot of heart, don't let pig's looks fool ya.

  • @tanglestrangle His looks? I tried to give Pig credit as well but primarily wanted to emphasize Jerry's status as a true guitar hero and one of the greatest minds of modern music.

  • AWESOME. even though 'everybody' goes after Jerry, I am a fan of PIGPEN!!!

  • @jwindyboy thats your opinion dude. brent could never do this. just saying

  • @JackStrawGD i could i play guitar like this cause i love 60s muic n i just jam like this

  • @grimgrimdeath666 haha i meant brent could never sing the blues so soulfully like pigpen, not saying brent wasnt awesome in his own respect. good to here you love this kind of music and are keepin it alive in these times of very bad pop music

  • Canny believe there's 11 dislikes to date on this - that's fcukin retarded!

  • @Flashboyg Why do you think so? I saw them often enough when they were youjng and so was I for me to completely comfortable with my judgment. They were an extremely audience friendly band for whtyever reason you care to scribe tat too. In my view, instrumentally, they were always sloppy at best and vocally they were inept. You may not agree but I cab assure you that I am far more than "fcukcin (sic) retarded.

  • Momma I'm so hard to handle. FUCKIN' A! (Black Crow's version is hard to handle)

  • i love how free everyone looks, no "man" watching over, just music and free love

  • dont get me wrong, I loves me some brent and he was fantastic but nothing beats that blues and edge that pigpen streamlined into the band. They became a completely different band once pig was gone and then again especially once brent came into the picture

  • @jwindyboy Nice try, rookie.

  • WHY WONT THE VOLUME GO ANY LOUDER??!!!

  • COLORS.

  • STL425 youtube channel.. Great version of Furthur covering Magnolia Mountain. Great footage of Jerry Garcia

  • Phil Lesh has played many nice-sounding basses over the years, but nothing beats the sound of Big Red, which he played at this concert and from 1969-the late '70s.

  • This is an excellent one but my personal fav HtH is the one from 7/31/71, aka Disc one of Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 3. Amazing Garcia guitar work on there.

  • LOL at the guy at the end with a 40!!!

  • this is from festival express!!

  • tell me the guy at :16 isnt having the time of his life. everyone there is. Pig, miss you dearly. Even with the minimalist keyboard that blues voice is what kept even blues legends coming back to see you perform. And Phil is such a lovable dork! being stoned helps ya pick up on the bass more. I shook his hand and his fingers went way up my wrist they were so long. But if you want illumination, sit back and watch jerry's hands, even if you dont listen. It's mezmerizing. This rap's over :)

  • @aequitas3 "tell me the guy at :16 isnt having the time of his life". What about the dude at 5:10?

  • @spykiss72 hahaha, that guy at :16 is definitely top tier but I think the most ecstatic fan on tape award goes to the guy from the grateful dead movie in the very front row in overalls singing his heart out to every song :)

  • @aequitas3 potatoes and corn flakes, or maybe a little Internet if you like??????????????

  • @aequitas3 that's when everyone in the crowd was tripping together, I mean furthur shows these days are similar, at least if you're near the front

  • check out the version of this song on the cd ladies and gentleman the hrateful dead- from fillmore april 1971- super tight gd and jerry's solo is illuminating--

  • @rjw123 HELL YEAH!!! Bear's choice right? If it is I totally agree with you, by far my favorite version of H2H.

  • love the black crowes and their cover of this song.

    ♥ ∞ love ∞ ♥ ~ ♥ ∞ trust ∞ ♥

  • Drop sum cid, smoke a joint, turn the lights out and Watch Jerry and Co. paint a beautiful work of art

  • @gratefullistener420 - great song, great version, idiotic commentary!

  • @gratefullistener420 Try listening to it without anything addling your brain. It's still solid soulful improvisation.

  • @gratefullistener420 in this case its pigpen and Co.

  • @gratefullistener420 In this case its pigpen and Co.

  • @gratefullistener420 I saw a few shows w/Pig. I like this but the *Hard To Handle* on Fallout From The Phil Zone is my favorite! I have seen the Grateful Dead in all sort of conditions. During my journey I joined the Wharf Rats. It was another Dead environment but still Fantastic! If you would like to experience pure Grateful Dead don't alter yourself. You just might find that you like it. The Grateful Dead has moved on and we have to see spin-offs. Listen to their recordings. Bliss.

  • @gondolinxx1 That Phil Zone 'Hard to Handle' is savage.

  • the solo is truly beautiful. gets me every time

  • PIG!!!

  • my guru is dead.

I will always remember where I was that day.

    fucken Jerry man, why?

Alas, the ship of the sun is sailed by the Grateful Dead.

  • Fuck, I rented this movie a while ago, and can't remember the name. I know it was about a train traveling Canada with all kinds of musicians.

  • @Iputrandomstuff

    It's called Festival Express!!

  • @Iputrandomstuff

    Festival Express

  • @Iputrandomstuff

    Festival Express

Tune about that trip ..."Might As Well"

  • There was so much more energy in the Pigpen-days. At times, he was almost like a spark plug for the whole band it seems!

  • Two drummers is badass..

And I'm not gay. John Mayer is..

  • Your an idiot

  • Everyone is so skinny.

  • Comment removed

  • Born to sing the blues! simply amazing

  • PIG!!!

  • This is beautiful :)

  • jeeez

i've tried to figure out what garcia's playing for rythem but it's confusing

how does he get that chirping noise?

  • whats the key to this tune?

  • it's in B

  • swacbro..as already said your entitled to your opinion..but whether you like them or not...you have to admit that theyre unique..and very few bands have been able to re create this sound and if they have it has been because of the Dead's influence...

  • Sounds like Swacbro has been to a couple of shows after all... ;) Not doggin ya bro. Everyone has their opinions. But, it sure doesn't look like any of those people are sitting down--much less sleeping.

Love this movie. The part when Jerry is in the train car jamming on the acoustic is awesome.

  • Jerry is on!! Respect!

  • youre an idiot swacbro i can only hope that one day you will be exposed to real music and learn that THE Grateful Dead have influenced all of the bands that you love.

  • swacbro I like some Dead but I think you'd appreciate the joke someone once told me: Q. "What did one Deadhead say to the other when they ran out of drugs? A: "What's this shitty music we're listening to?"

  • @swacbro get a life

  • What do you do with your "life"?

And yeah I put life in quotations to suggest your not living

  • @ClueSign Lmao nice, i can apreiciate that

  • @swacbro youre a fucking retard

  • taking a train across canada made it rough to carry owlsley's finest though a huge hand full did make thru those royal mounties just did not get our need for psychedelics but that is their loss.

  • Redding wrote the song himself. It was originally recorded as a collaborative effort with the two aforementioned artists.

Great song and this is my favorite version.

Jerry could wail on that guitar.

  • i think Redding co-wrote this with Allen Jones and Alvertis Isbell.

  • otic redding.

  • Damnit, I will never see pigpen singing with the dead and its hard to stomach. Fuck my generation!

  • this is really cool to watch. 8/6/70 hollywood bowl is cool too. Shame THAT wasnt filmed.

  • the jam band by which all others are measured

  • No one beats THE DEAD!!!

  • @1968spiritman yup! the jam band before there were jam bands!!

  • The pigpen years are unbeatable.

  • @northernjerry AMEN to that...PIGPEN...set the standard for JUST GOIN OFF!!...but i gotta give bobby sum respect for takin up the reigns..but no one can do LOVELIGHT or this LIKE PIGPEN BROTHA...what a real man!...R.I.P. - BIG DOG...:)

  • Pigpen, Ron McKernan rocks here and the whole band is just so funky

  • foltano sucks ass!

  • @foltano The crowd....they disagree

  • yo mothers sucks ass

  • Pig Pen for ever

  • ive been hearing lately alot of people saying that jerrys best years were in the 80s and 90s but in my opinion the mid 60's to mid 70's are the greatest

  • @sk8ingwalrus07 "in my opinion the mid 60s to mid 70s are the greatest"

    seconded

my own pet theory is that most every fan fixates on the Dead as of the time they 1st encountered them

works for me -- wasn't around in 70-75, but I was first turned on to GD by "The GD Movie," wh i think was Winterland '74?

so even tho i love every 1 of their incarnations, the Keith/Donna - Workingman's - American Beauty - Mars Hotel era is the 1 that really does it for me

Jerry, all of u - thanx 4 it all

  • dude jerry rocks no onr plays like that anymore

come here uncle johns band playing to the tide

  • I don't care how old someone is ,, just:

    """"""Think this through with me

    Let me know your mind

Wo-oah, what I want to know

    is are you kind?"""""""""

  • i wanna be dead head and im only 17 but ive never really seen them live do u have to see them live at least once to be a dead head

  • Hey now ... if you're 17 then it goes without saying you haven't seen a show, but you can still be a Deadhead. There will always be Deadheads. Welcome to the scene, welcome home.

  • thax for comment its a shame i cnt see them live i live in england so i dont think ill ever see them live but at least im going to see status quo in december they will be good no where near as Grateful Dead though but i no that i can be a dead head i might try and find grateful dead T-shirts lol

  • Bro it does not got without saying just because the guy is 17. I'm 14 and i have seen them, at Rothbury fest. up in Michigan. I live about five min. away from the fest. so we just sneak in.

  • Sorry, I was speaking of "The Grateful Dead Proper" with Jerry , Bob, and Phil, 1965-1995. I'm sure the new guitarist is great but there will never be another Jerry.

  • Oh gotcha dude, mybad. I know what your saying. sorry 'bout that.

  • grateful fuckin dead ya'll. 4life

  • Dead heads unite........even with me......rock on ncbloom

  • 5:03 Those little chirps with the SG .......could never really get those with the custom made guitars

  • how do you get those chirps on the guitar??

  • I dont know where you put your fingeres but i know their snappy upstrokes on the high e and b strings.

  • at 2:13 Jerry steps into the engine,at 2:38,,he's home..2:59 circling the planets...3:21...??? 4:01,,the look on his face is precious ...5:01..coming back to earth.... F#$%.....!!!!!!

  • That SG, you have no idea how deeply the sound of that thing, the TONE of that particular guitar is burned into my brain, it's great to hear a performance of this standard.

What;'s Lesh playing? - it looks like a fender Jazz. anyone know?

  • dude lesh is playing an sg bass!!!

i love the soind of those 69 and 70 shows when jerry is rockin the sg

  • my bad

    but phil is

    (bass)

  • i wish that i had grown up in their time

just to be a part of something like this.

  • This will always be the DEAD to me.

  • goddamn! pig sounds great in this one! and as usual, very different arrangement.... i love it

  • The guy at 1:49 looks too much like Steven Tyler..

  • Jerry's best solo - that year

  • great song

  • I'm going to see the Black Crowes for the first time tomorrow night and I'm sure it won't compare to this, but I saw the Dead a bunch in the nineties and it didn't compare to this either. Plus, they're the only decent band to make it down to South Florida all Summer/Fall not playing the Hard Rock casino, so the Crowes are alright by me.

  • RIP pigpen.

  • black crows are not comparable to zep. and its obvious that the best remake of Hard to Handle is by Tom Jones hands down

  • pagey seemed to think they were comparable enough to do a tour with them. sure your ear for zeppelin is more developed than jimmy pages though.

  • yah yah you can compare anything to anything. What i meant was that they blow when compared to zeppelin obviously. if you listen to the stuff they did together it sounds like shit. the black crowes are shit and you are a sarcastic bitch. oh and say high to pagey for cause you guys are best friends and all.

  • nah, just dont spend all my time on youtube. just like reading books and interviews. the crowes arent shit, thats a ridiculously closed minded thing to say, they are one of the few bands with a killer live act. on what terms so they suck? just curious..

  • This cover puts The Crows to shame..

  • So true!
