Neal is without dobt the most intelligent Rock and Roll drummer this planet will ever see..one only has to listen to him interview or sit back and take in his lyrics....he's a brilliant, talented man....how painful it must have been for him to sit in the same room with bill maher.
Can't say I was very impressed with Bill Maher's treatment of Neil Peart on this show.....and I have usually liked Bill Maher. When he "made fun" of Neil , using a word like "facile"...I felt like smacking the guy across the head.
Really too bad, because Bill Maher is one of the biggest jackasses on the planet...not funny at all. Meanwhile, Rush is probably the best of what they do.
Sadly, this segment of a TV show was talking about the dumbing down of things, and it just has to cut the discussion off before it actually went anywhere because it's design mandates discussions can only have 10 or so minutes of time... if that's not a sign of the very topic then what is? Peart's lyrics are just full of great ideas and observations (social, political, etc). Sadly a show like this isn't much of a forum for his thoughts. One major option is to never watch TV shows like this.
1. It's not a sin, just annoying and disrespectful to have ANY guest on your show and not even be able to pronouce their name, especially one as simple as "Peart". 2. I don't pay any attention to people who call other people "gods". 3. Popular opinion doesn't change what's correct. 4. I uploaded it because I'm sharing all the rare Rush-related stuff I have. I have no control over how much time he got to speak. 5. I HAVE done much better, there's many hours of stuff on my channel. Thanks.
@xxxx15us he did pronouce his name right. Its French Canadian. I know everybody in the US pronouce it as "PERT," with out pronouncing the "A." When saying Neals name, you always push that "A." PEAAART!
@Abonanno24601 I can't believe you've posted three times in a row to insult me and rant about the pronunciation of Peart but you call him "Neal" on top of it. Look, go watch the end of the Pamela Wallin interview with Peart on my channel where she says his name correctly and then even confirms with him right there that it's correct and there'll be no doubt how it's pronounced. It sounds like "ear" with a "t" on the end. It's comical that people still can't get a simple name right.
@wctennisnyc Why are you telling me this? I've always pronounced it correctly as "PEERT" when most others didn't. And being American has nothing to do with getting it wrong, I suggest you go look at all the documentary/interview footage on my channel from even Canadian sources that not only call him "PERT" but actually spell it that way, too. Stupidity is universal so please take your anti-Americanism elsewhere.
@xxxx15us I thought "Peart" as well over the years? English is so damn hard? Glad I never addressed the man? Took me 30 years to find out "Peert"? For God sake I love the man, the damn professor?
@wctennisnyc Incidentally, I'm not a stupid American. I'm a humble Irishman. But thanks for the blanket overgeneralization of all Americans. I'm guessing everyone in your home nation is brilliant...
@xxxx15us Then help me out, please. I've been a fan of the band (not a worshipper, as I enjoy lots of bands, but Rush is a band whose music 1974-1986 I learned to play on guitar and bass both, so...) forever it seems. I've heard Neil's surname pronounced every conceivable way, and I STILL don't know which is right. Can you spell it for me phonetically if you know the proper pronunciation?
@xxxx15us I'm reading this character assassination going back and forth between the viewers and you, and I find this disgusting. To insult someone's intelligence over mispronunciation (out of ignorance of the subject) is banal, trite and petty. CONTENT is greater than grammar. And one should be cautious not to point out stupidity in another unless one assured of their own infallibility. Chances are, the pointing finger will eventually expose the ignorance of the pointer. Careful.
(continued) ''...whereas if you watch something that is dumber than you are, its no threat. In fact, its an affirmation. Its saying, 'Beavis and Butt Head are so stupid! I'm not that stupid!' People do affirm themselves with negative stereotypes.''
(continued) ''...whereas if you watch something that is dumber than you are, its no threat. In fact, its an affirmation. Its saying, 'Beavis and Butt Head are so stupid! I'm not that stupid!' People do affirm themselves with negative stereotypes.''
Paraphrasing Peart at 10:41 to 11:27: ''It's too facile to say that people are getting dumber, but the expectations change. Human nature or human potential doesn't change that fast, but the expectations do. The monitors by which we measure ourselves do, too. So sometimes people look up to heroes and they want to be better or be smarter and they'll watch something that is maybe too smart for them hoping that they'll get something from it that will elevate themselves,
Maher invokes the very sloth he appears to be trying to understand and classify. Peart's "facile" DID go over his head. Peart's thought process DID leave the center of attention on that stage in a rather awkward and HOPELESSLY AMERICAN position.
"hu-huh-hu-huh-huh, you said "head".....hu-huh-hu-hu-hu-huh-hu-huh..."
I will reserve my comments about Maher and say Peart is a brilliant man. One thing I will say is if you're going to sit around and talk about how dumb people have become and you're a show host then it behooves you to get the pronunciation of your guests' names straight.
@mmsun44 No doubt, and what's really odd is how he not only says Peart's name incorrectly but he screws it up in a way I've never heard anywhere else. Like Peart is French or something. Bizarre.
@xxxx15us That's because Maher isn't quite as smart as he's like everyone to think he is. He even says around the :30 mark that he got all the names right.
It's like "pear" and then he sticks a "t" on the end. Makes a refreshing change from the ludicrous "pert".
I'm surprised people don't rhyme ir with "heart"...
But of course it is pronounced to rhyme with hear, fear, dear, tear etc, I often think my name if boring as first and last names are just one syllable each, but at least people rarely mispronounce them.
Neil Peart is an intellectual, a very bright man. At times he is/appears to be socially uncomfortable. It must be painful for him to sit there with these bumbling idiots making fools of themselves in an attempt to be funny.
@DrinkThunderbird - Right on both points (delusion and pronouncing Peart as "Parrot")! That's funny. I like how they're discussing intellect and education to some degree and yet when Neil uses the word "facile," that jackass Maher points it out as somehow forced or as if it's some $5 word. (Surely a "rock'n'roll" drummer couldn't know THAT word!). Truth be told, despite his lack of a completed formal education, Neil has proven himself - to me at least - to be far more intelligent than Maher.
@kellruss Education has little to do with intelligence. Peart is a brilliant thinker. He's intuitive in his thought process. You can't teach that. Maher is a newspaper reader and simply chooses an opinion that is close to his own and embellishes it. Peart thinks of what people like Maher can only repeat. To connect this to Rush: They've often been called the thinking man's band. Any wonder why? Brilliant begets brilliance. Long live Rush!
@phelplitz - I mentioned his abbreviated education and used the term "intelligence" merely to make a point re someone like NP vs a Bill Maher (Cornell educated... with a BA in English nonetheless) - a point which you clearly understood. But I also understand your comments and agree 100%.
What's ironic is that the panel is discussing the limited attention spans of our youth, yet when an interesting point is made (such as a book and its derived movie being a different experience), the format of the show is such that they have no more time to explore the idea, or they interrupt the flow to go to a commercial. What has just been demonstrated here is that our media helps create the conditions for short attention spans.
@kiddster2112 - Right. And as I pointed out to another post, they were also discussing intellect and education to some degree. Yet when Neil uses the word "facile," that jackass Maher points it out as somehow forced or as if it's some $5 word. What a numbskull.

What is the word Peart uses after Maher's Wyne's World comment (10:39)? Peart says, "it's too ___ to say that people are getting dumber"? What is the term he used. I couldn't hear. Thank you.
@xxxx15us - Thank you! Perfect word for Bill Maher. I find it ironic that Maher is always attacking people's intelligence, but yet makes the dumbest arguments. I guess it is to be expected.
Hate to sound like a fanboy but Peart appeared to be the most humble and most intelligent person in that room. Listen to albums like 2112 and Hemispheres that were statements on philosophy and the human condition, and it shows that you don't need to be pretentious or bombastically argue for people to know your intellect.
Peart is smart, and I love Rush, but I didn't care for this video. Seemed like a room full of people who think they are better than everyone else. Never really associated with those kind of people...
Ricard Pryer, George Carlin and Lenny Bruce are hilarious!! I can prove that quite easily. Name me one funny stand up routine that Bill Maher has ever done? You can't because he's a third rate hack and you can take that to the bank you spineless puke!!
And to be fair, several of the criticisms of Maher that include "blows dog dicks" and such are over the top, too. I've got my own strong political beliefs but let's please try to keep this just about Peart since that's the whole reason I uploaded it. There are a million other places on the web to shout obscenities at each other. I just wanted to upload this stuff for Rush fans to watch. Thanks a lot, guys! I'm not trying to lecture anybody up but let's try to be civil.
@einarabelc5 Well, that's complicated. He's very Libertarian like I am. Early in Rush's career he (and the band) was considered by some to be right wing because so much of the lyrics focused on the individual over collectivism. But then over time it seems like many on the right bashed him for being so critical of religion. So, I guess the answer is both. Or Neither. My own frustration is that more people aren't more sophisticated in their political beliefs. Sometimes it's not just this or that.
@einarabelc5 I'd also suggest you go watch my upload of Peart being interviewed by Pamela Wallin. It's very in depth from 1996 and he talks about his values and describes himself as "apolitical". Also, you can get more insight from his books and many other interviews. He's very pro-capitalism, pro-individual, and anti-authoritarian, but also very critical of religion and socially soft-hearted. He's also described himself in the past as a "bleeding heart Libertarian". Just like I am :)
@einarabelc5 One last thing is to look closely at Rush's lyrics. The line in Tom Sawyer (which is all about the individual spirit) describes Neil well. "No his mind is not for rent, to any god or government" sums him up perfectly. Broadly speaking, conservatives want religious authority over the individual and those of the left want government authority over the individual. Peart (and I) would prefer not much of either. So there's my long-winded take. Thanks for commenting!
@xxxx15us Why don't you tell these folks that mispronouncing a name is not a sin. Neil is NOT a GOD! Most everyone gets his name wrong. I believe it is pronounced PEERT, not PERT, but so what? Maher was a beginner, rather outta sorts here & quite smug. He has improved greatly, except for the smugness. As for you, why upload 14 minutes of Politically Incorrect "ABOUT" Neil Peart when he gets about 1 minute airtime talking about Beavis, Butthead & Shakespeare? Surely, you can do better than that.
@sabbathrulz99 I simply uploaded this for Peart fans to watch and had no intention of starting a political battle. While it's true that people have already been critical of Maher here which I didn't encourage your level of venom and bile does nothing but further the stereotype of the political left as completely emotionally unhinged and irrational. Figure out how to form a coherent argument without calling the other side "bitch" and "dumbass", grow up a little, and then try again. Bye.
Thanks for posting. I've seen this before and really wished Neil was not so shy and intellectually destroyed this practically retarded liberal's thoughts.
This is a monosyllabic surname that's hard to get a handle on. Plus, Neil Peart is not a "Rush". He is a drummer/ percussionist/lyricist/memoirist (of Rush). Also, this is an interesting panel of near obscure individuals. Neil Peart was still kind of unknown to lot of people but that's probably changed.

@shrumpkin ... no, it's NOT pronounced like the fruit.... it's as StellarJetman states: like "ear" with a P and T at either end! Trust me. I'm Canadian. LOL.

Bye.

All these people are mental midgets compared to Neil Peart, but for Maher, that's a given.

Maher embarrassingly mispronounces Neil's last name...*sigh*
But I love this!
notamomo 10 months ago
@notamomo actually, that's the correct way to pronounce his name. "Pert" is wrong. It's pronounced like the fruit–with a "t."
shrumpkin 9 months ago
@shrumpkin
Actually, it's pronounced "peert", like "ear".
StellarJetman 8 months ago 21
@StellarJetman you are 100 percent correct, it's pronounced "peert". He has clarified it himself many times in interviews.
drinkerl3elll 5 months ago
@StellarJetman Yeah, true fans know how to pronounce it right. :D
21stCenturyBoxProduc 4 months ago
@shrumpkin ... no, it's NOT pronounced like the fruit.... it's as StellarJetman states: like "ear" with a P and T at either end! Trust me. I'm Canadian. LOL.
