Back Beat was owned by the infamous black gangster Don Robey who owned his own label in Houston long before Motown came around. The Coastliners might have been the only white act he had.
Rex Kramer real name was Rex Culbeth... changed it prior to H.S. I think Herbie Busby also played in it at some point .. David @ Robert E. Lee graduate `66
The Coastliners are/were great! I have been waiting for someone to download their song, She's My Girl. If Sunshinetunes has it, I'd appreciate it. Also a great song & their biggest hit. Been a fan since high school days in Baytown
I grew up in Pasadena, Texas and The Coastliners were from Baytown, Texas about 20 minutes away. I agree-She's My Girl" is the best!! I played the record so much I ruined it! Please post it- Thanks!
I ruined my copy years ago. I grew up in Baytown & lead singer of Coastliners lined across the street. I had a concert about 3 nights a week from the comfort of my BR when they practiced. Wish someone would post it. Gotta be an original copy floating around somewhere!
How lucky were you living across the street. My cousin grew up in Baytown and graduated in 1966 and knew two of the members, but I don't remember their names. She's My Girl was my favorite, but the song "I See Me" is also posted - it is a good one too!
Very lucky @ that time. The lead singer was Larry Sanders, drummer was Ozzie Hart. One of the guitarists last name was Williamson (can't remember 1st name), Tommie Meekins, and I can't remember the 5th member. 2 many yrs. :) Well, maybe someone will post She's My Girl if we keep beggin. Might have known your cousin...I graduated in '68
Their names are Judy and Linda Dawson; they lived on 8th one or two blocks off of Texas. I think that was the major drag coming into Baytown. I always remember driving by a Holiday Inn. One graduated in 1960 and the other I think in 1964 from Baytown Lee. If you have any yearbooks, look em up. By the way, sunshinetunes67 posted She's My Girl just for our requests, along with a cute note picking on us about the sappyness of the song. HA HA. Thank you sunshinetunes67-you are great!!!!
I did not know the Dawson, remember hearing of them. Your memory of the area very accurate. Yes, sunshine did post the song, but it sure sounds different than in the '60s (maybe a newer version, as they are still recording), but appreciated just the same. And, did you see where we are quoted as "2 hippie girls from Texas?" I was not even a hippie in 60s. Just a fan who was lucky enough to live close & enjoy the tunes!
fancypants...I 'm also from the Houston area...but was only about 9 when this song was on the radio. I remember seeing these guys on the Larry Kane Show...I thought that the singer's name was Rex Kramer. It seems that I'm incorrect, but was Rex Kramer a member of the band??? As my sister would say, I've slept since then!
Hey Jade, Rex was the 1 I couldn't remember's name, thx! He sang also, but was 2nd to Larry Sanders on most their songs. I was like 16 at thet time & remember their music so well...but also have "slept since then...and then some" !!

I guess Baytown has always claimed The Coastliners as their's but don't forget than Tommy and Ozzie went to Deer Park, H.S.
boxravens 2 years ago
@boxravens That's because they lived across the bay in Lynchburg. They're closer to Baytown than Deer Park.
