Maybe he was influenced more by whomever influenced the serpent, in this movie and in the garden. No coincidence the moves are EXACTLY the same. It says, those that have ears to hear let them hear.
I'm not a Jackson fan but you can see the similarity. How old was MJ in '74, when this movie was made?
Naturally people would post references the allegations of child molestation or impropriety or whatever it was against Jackson. Snakes are often portrayed in literature as being "seductive." There is an old folk tale that seems to they have the power to "fascinate" or hypnotise people (Ben Franklin refers to this in his famous rattlesnake letter).
The filmmakers really rather goofed as far as the snake goes (they wouldn't be the last: see, for example, the Harry Potter flicks). That snake's a boa constrictor...a bite can be painful (trust me) and it can be a challenge to get them to let go, but they're not in the least venomous. Not a critter who could administer the "kiss of death." The *hug* of death, now....
Also boa constrictors are native to South & Central America. The Sahara is in Africa!
after watching it, I'd say that he copied a good portion of that style. no doubt he was inspired, but you must admit that he copied Bob Fosse - using a lot of the exact same moves, mannerisms, etc and didn't so as good a job as Mr. Fosse.

This is an awesome movie, but I have a question: This little boy is, of course, somewhat imagining the snake as a human. What little boy imagines a snake to be a smoking, creepy, sexy man doing an exotic dance number?
"The Little Prince" is most definitely a children's story. It's NOT a seduction and nothing inappropriate is going on in this scene. In fact, Fosse's young daughter loved the story and wanted her dad to do this scene. The little Prince is looking for a way back to his home (a small asteroid where a beautiful but demanding Rose lives). The Snake is telling the Prince how he can get back home; by dying--"It's almost painless." In the end the snake does bite him and he dies and returns home.

Yes MJ was HEAVILY influenced by Bob Fosse & the legendary Broadway musical performer was a friend to the fledgling King of Pop. Michael learned so much from him.
this one of my favorite movies as a child, it came out in 1974, i used to watch it every year on t.v., and when michael jackson first showed these moves in the 80's....I KNEW he took them from this movie! i just knew it!!!!
One of my fav movies, fea one the best dancer/choreographers of all time!!!! you can see in his moves that he's inspired one of the best entertainers of all time!!!! Just watch!!
IGNORANT PEOPLE, MICHAEL DANCE WHIT 10 YEARS, WHIT THE J FIVE HIM USE THE MOONWALKER STEP, MY GODDD!!!!!!! MICHAEL NO BORN WHIT 20 YEARS AND THE BILLIE JEAN SONG , ...........
@QueueBionique Um, no that is completely incorrect. Marceau had nothing to do with the moonwalk in any way, shape, or form. The technique comes from tap dance from a move called the 'get off' which tap dancers used to exit the stage, as early as the 1930s and 1940s, but street dancers in the late 1970s enhanced the 'get off' move by creating the illusion aspect which makes it look like the dancer is moving backward whilst walking forward.
OMG... I used to watch this movie almost on daily basis when I was a child and I remember being so drawn to The Snake... Gene Wilder as the Fox was amazing too. I need to find this movie!!!
A question for everyone saying, "MJ didn't steal from him; he was just influenced by him, because every artist has influences, duh!":
Does that mean that if this movie had been made in 1995, with some unknown dancer doing these moves, while dressed like that...you wouldn't be accusing him of "stealing" MJ's moves? Or calling him an MJ impersonator?
Every artist IS influenced by other artists, but there's a line between being influenced and stealing. Michael Jackson crossed that line.
@fidelio1980 If you actually knew the history of MJ's dance style, you wouldn't say MJ stole anything from Bob Fosse. Most of MJ's moves are not connected to Bob Fosse at all.
i dont agree . this video is based on the fosse dance style in my opinion and that i think mj's dancing WAS connected to Bob fosse's dancing but i dont think he stole it or anything but he did use it. mj had his own flare thats what made him famous dancing wise
and I find it just as sad that people, probably even some here, think Lady Gaga is original. Gaga is praised but she straight up copies Madonna & when she deflects, she copies Elton & Marilyn Manson. It just pisses me off that people can say a man who spent his whole life perfecting dance and performance is copying someone else style simply because of some shoes and a hat. Yeah, there are a few moves from a few videos that are in this piece, but that's all. Didn't know Fosse patented them.
Clearly many of the posters here don't know the difference between "inspiring" and copying. Michael has never denied his inspirations -- Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Little Richard, Fred Astaire, Jeffrey Daniel, Bob Fosse, Gene Kelly, the list goes on. He always acknowleded the greats. What makes Michael different is he took from the inspirations, made it his own, and made it BETTER. You can't deny he was stylistically inspired by this Fosse performance, but he sure as hell didn't COPY it.
@agentAA08 I think that if he would be only inspired by them, he would have something from them in his style, but he wouldn't have taken every characteristic move ! I think I can say he didn't make HIS style, but he took the others' and mix it. Did U know that Pop N' Taco worked for him and teached him but the price of it was that he couldn't dance in public? That's quite unfair, don't u think?...
@agentAA08 HEY COPIED THEY HELL OUT OF THIS !!! IM A DANCER 20 YEARS AND I LOVE MIKE BUT YOU SEE VERY LITTLE JAMES BROWN IN HIS STYLE AND A LITTLE KELLY BUT WHAT MADE MIKE FAMOUS WAS HIS MOVES HE RIPPED FROM FOSSE JUST ADMIT IT AND DEAL WITH IT .
It is true that Mike was very influenced by musicals, not just Bob's (but most of his too). Just watch musicals from 50s-70s and u'll see a lot of where Michael's inspiration came from.
And are we missing something here? What about the black loafers + white socks which later became one of his trademarks and was a BIG giveaway whenever he tried to disguise himself to go out in public!
you can tell that mj was inspired by fosse but he was also inspired by james brown. a lot in his younger years. just look at how he danced when he was in the jackson 5.
Wow amazing how at times it looked like it could have been MJ. It looks like not only did Fosse inspire him through dance, but this movie/book "The Prince" must have inspired him in all ways. Isn't his son named Prince?
very true. It's fascinating to see that not only were MJ's dance moves inspired by Fosse, but his style was as well. The king of pop wouldn't have a crown if it weren't for Fosse, as I see it. Both incredible artists.
@sherelle74 I find it a bit funny that you are referring to Bob Fosse as "this guy" XD Just the fact that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop was inspired by "this guy" should be a clue that this man was a bit more than a just random guy dancing around....
@sherelle74 Being inspired by Bob's moves does not mean Billie Jean was not original. MJ wrote, composed and coreographed BJ on his own tho he had his influences in all of his dancing, not only from "this guy" and not only in BJ.
Besides I dont see much of BJ's moves in this vid, I see a lot more of Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel and others here...
Interesting...was Michael Jackson influenced by Bob Fosse's "Snake in the grass character made back in 1974. Fast forward through this clip to the middle. Look at the movements! I mean all of the movvements from Billie Jean and the rest of his videos. I mean nothing's wrong with that. Michael didn't actually creaate the moonwalk, but I'm a little surpised that it was not originally Michael's style. It came from this famous choreographer.
Blah, blah, blah, MJ copied so what. The fact is MJ made it better and more entertaining. You could say Bob Fosse also copied from black dancers of the 30-50's. I give Fosse a lot of credit because he copied the moves from one genre and was able to create something new with it. Somebody always copies from someone. It's like Elvis copying his stuff from blacks and labeling it his own. Except Elvis sucked!!!

If he wasn't inspired by this then that's one hell of a coincidence. My mind has just been blown. I love to find out the inspiration/origins of things.
I am impressed by the dance number, but I kinda disagree with its context... If I didn't know that this was in a movie called The Little Prince I would think that the snake was trying to seduce the little boy (no wonder why MJ was inspired)... So I was thinking maybe the moves were a bit inappropriate for this story but spectacular no less.
@Troublemaker1991 Well in a way the snake /was/ trying to seduce The Little Prince. If you've read the book, you would know that the snake kills the boy. However, in order to get close enough to kill him, he must gain his trust. That is basically what is going on in this scene. Also, if you knew anything about Bob Fosse, you would know that his style of dance is very fluid. He put that into this scene, being as fluid and slithery as a snake is.
@carpex3diem19 And what makes you think I don't know about Bob Fosse's style?? He just so happens to be one of my favorite choreographers and film directors. Ok, I admit I didn't know the story of The Little Prince so I didn't know about the snake. I understood only a few basic things from seeing this clip, but it doesn't stop me from being entitled to disagree with Fosse's choreographic directions here. Just cause I understood the concept doesn't mean I had to absolutely love it.
@Troublemaker1991 The real context is 1974, before we saw pedophilia in everything. Take it as it is, a snake that's trying to sting a victim danced by an incredible choreographer/dancer who was still amazing in middle age.
@Troublemaker1991 Many things can be interpreted incorrectly when taken out of context. When I first watched this movie, I never thought Bob Fosse was pulling a Michael Jackson on this kid.
@Troublemaker1991 Well, he is trying to seduce him, but not in any sexual way, (though admittedly one particular move looked a bit iffy"sit right down upon a snake in the grass" and "all's well that ends"), but I think its more like the snake in the Garden of Eden kind of thing. After all he is trying to get the little boy to let him bite and kill him! And from the bits I've seen this isn't exactly a movie strictly for kids.
'I complained that I had not stayed on my toes like I'd wanted on Motown 25, Bob Fosse told me later, "Michael, it's never the steps that are important. It's the style". Moonwalker by Michael Jackson' - 8mycrab
I am glad to have read this. I kept looking all over for the internet for the connection between Bob Fosse and Michael Jackson. This is a relief.
lol i love seeing mj crotch grabbin..and MJs makes it into a move.. he does it in good taste and doesnt over do it, he really done it in black panther dance its where it was right in ur face
MJ didn't acknowledge Fosse as he had Astaire and James Brown. I LOVE MJ, but I am not going to defend this just because its him. He should have done more to acknowledge Fosse. When considering that Fosse's career went on decline nearly simultaneously as Michael's was on an ascent, Michael should have at least given some sort of thanks to Fosse. Further, Fosse had style and Grace. Michael really perverted some of his Fosse's moves. No no wanted to see all that crotch grabbing.
'I complained that I had not stayed on my toes like I'd wanted on Motown 25, Bob Fosse told me later, "Michael, it's never the steps that are important. It's the style". Moonwalker by Michael Jackson'
@CKisSUP1 You're entitled to your opinion about Bob Fosse's dancing ability, but you have to give him credit for creating some of the moves that became MJ's signature dancing style. Fosse choreographed over a dozen broadway shows and quite a few movies, and there's no denying the man was an original, and very talented too.
@lazybones2000 And that's what I said : "Je veux bien reconnaître qu'il y a certaines postures dont MJ a du s'inspirer". And I agree with saying that he was an original and that he was talented in creating choregraphies for shows and movies etc...but to me, he's not a good dancer. But he doesn't need to be good at dance to create dance after all.
okey, You have a chance too, copy this and dance and sing as fantastic as Michael did... Let's go just try it, or don't say a word because it is not fair.
Bob Fosse was off the hook as a dancer and choreographer and was one hell of a director, too. We need more creative people like him. Long live the legendary Bob Fosse.
I love this. Michael wasn't stuck in the box, Im so glad he was inspired to dance this way, he stuck with it. It just opens your eyes to different styles of dance. This is great.
Mike took a bit from all of his heroes... It's clear here.. He then made it his own and transformed the entire world.. That is the sign of a true artist...
I soooo agree. If you look at bill robinson u can clearly tell he inspired the hell out of Fred astaire, and fred astaire has admited to this and has even redone his performances.
Same with James brown, he idolized little richard etc. I can go on forever here.
beethoven came from mozart. etc.
But its true artistry to create your own craft from something you love. just LIKE EVERY SINGLE LEGEND HAS DONE. not just michael.
@KeepTrue56 The difference is that Fred Astaire gave Bill Robinson his due credit. Michael gave James Brown, Fred Astaire, and Jeffrey Daniels credit. He didn't do this Fosse to the degree that he had with others. It almost seems as if the Michael Jackson Machine of that time purposely sabotaged Fosse's career. Fosse's career declined a year after MJ's Thriller. Coincidence? Maybe not.
@MsReeReeChiq what are you babbeling about.. are you saying MJ
sought out to sabatoge fosses career? MJ Loved and respected all dancers from those times.. and MJ MAKES IT KNOWN that James brown jackie wilson and fred astaire are his main major influence along with street dance.. lol.. Bob fosse is a legend.. who cares if his career dimmed down after mjs thriller... thats life, everyones prime comes to an end... however there still legends
@KeepTrue56@KeepTrue56 Babbling - I think not! It is highly possible that it could have been sabotage. I am not saying that it was. However, considering other things MJ did such as buying The Beatles catalog from under Paul McCartney, I will not say that is an impossibility. Further, you are babbling and rambling on and on about James Brown and these other people that MJ has publicly acknowledged as influences numerous times. That is a mute point.
@KeepTrue56 I care if Fosse's career dimmed, because he worked hard. I care that Michael had to face so much adversity because of vicious lies. I care because Michael worked hard. I feel that those who work hard to create - create - create something and promote and maintain it as well should be given their due credit. They deserve it. I don't care if they are a legend or not.
Michael Jackson never 'EVER' said that HE created his dances, he always said he was influenced and copied from the greats including Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, James Brown and Bob Fosse, he also said he was inspired by kids dancing in the streets.Where Michaels genius came from was to put ALL of these things together and add his own twists. MrGATUkiller 1 year ago
@MrGATUkiller Try checking for Marcel Marceau, and find the clips, you will see exactly WHO created that Moonwalk dance, decades before Michael J.
QueueBionique 1 year ago
@QueueBionique Marceau did not invent the moonwalk if that's what youre implying.
bm5891 1 year ago
@bm5891 That's right, I am not implying it, Marceau popularized it some, MJ picked it up from others who got it from Marceau.
QueueBionique 1 year ago
@QueueBionique Um, no that is completely incorrect. Marceau had nothing to do with the moonwalk in any way, shape, or form. The technique comes from tap dance from a move called the 'get off' which tap dancers used to exit the stage, as early as the 1930s and 1940s, but street dancers in the late 1970s enhanced the 'get off' move by creating the illusion aspect which makes it look like the dancer is moving backward whilst walking forward.

Michael Jackson crossed that line.
fidelio1980 1 year ago 2
@fidelio1980 If you actually knew the history of MJ's dance style, you wouldn't say MJ stole anything from Bob Fosse. Most of MJ's moves are not connected to Bob Fosse at all.
bm5891 1 year ago
@bm5891
i dont agree . this video is based on the fosse dance style in my opinion and that i think mj's dancing WAS connected to Bob fosse's dancing but i dont think he stole it or anything but he did use it. mj had his own flare thats what made him famous dancing wise

and I find it just as sad that people, probably even some here, think Lady Gaga is original.

You can't deny he was stylistically inspired by this Fosse performance, but he sure as hell didn't COPY it.
agentAA08 1 year ago 23
@agentAA08 I think that if he would be only inspired by them, he would have something from them in his style, but he wouldn't have taken every characteristic move ! I think I can say he didn't make HIS style, but he took the others' and mix it. Did U know that Pop N' Taco worked for him and teached him but the price of it was that he couldn't dance in public? That's quite unfair, don't u think?...
(sorry for my English;p)
trankila15 10 months ago
@agentAA08 MJ certainly made it his own, and made it POP, but I wouldn't say he made it better. He made it relevant to the context of his music.

It is true that Mike was very influenced by musicals, not just Bob's (but most of his too). Just watch musicals from 50s-70s and u'll see a lot of where Michael's inspiration came from.
And are we missing something here? What about the black loafers + white socks which later became one of his trademarks and was a BIG giveaway whenever he tried to disguise himself to go out in public!
xTelha 1 year ago
you can tell that mj was inspired by fosse but he was also inspired by james brown. a lot in his younger years. just look at how he danced when he was in the jackson 5.

Wow amazing how at times it looked like it could have been MJ. It looks like not only did Fosse inspire him through dance, but this movie/book "The Prince" must have inspired him in all ways. Isn't his son named Prince?

I rather enjoy the idea that MJ was inspired by Fosse. There is something endearing and so very human about it that is quite touching.
Hellhound86 1 year ago
@Hellhound86
very true. It's fascinating to see that not only were MJ's dance moves inspired by Fosse, but his style was as well. The king of pop wouldn't have a crown if it weren't for Fosse, as I see it. Both incredible artists.

@sherelle74 I find it a bit funny that you are referring to Bob Fosse as "this guy" XD Just the fact that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop was inspired by "this guy" should be a clue that this man was a bit more than a just random guy dancing around....
pixiegurl88 1 year ago 2
@sherelle74 Being inspired by Bob's moves does not mean Billie Jean was not original. MJ wrote, composed and coreographed BJ on his own tho he had his influences in all of his dancing, not only from "this guy" and not only in BJ.
Besides I dont see much of BJ's moves in this vid, I see a lot more of Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel and others here...

Amazing! The man moves like water. What a talent!
dolphyns2000 1 year ago
Interesting...was Michael Jackson influenced by Bob Fosse's "Snake in the grass character made back in 1974. Fast forward through this clip to the middle. Look at the movements! I mean all of the movvements from Billie Jean and the rest of his videos. I mean nothing's wrong with that. Michael didn't actually creaate the moonwalk, but I'm a little surpised that it was not originally Michael's style. It came from this famous choreographer.
shayoh1 1 year ago
Blah, blah, blah, MJ copied so what. The fact is MJ made it better and more entertaining. You could say Bob Fosse also copied from black dancers of the 30-50's. I give Fosse a lot of credit because he copied the moves from one genre and was able to create something new with it. Somebody always copies from someone. It's like Elvis copying his stuff from blacks and labeling it his own. Except Elvis sucked!!!

Troublemaker1991 1 year ago 5
@Troublemaker1991 Well in a way the snake /was/ trying to seduce The Little Prince. If you've read the book, you would know that the snake kills the boy. However, in order to get close enough to kill him, he must gain his trust. That is basically what is going on in this scene. Also, if you knew anything about Bob Fosse, you would know that his style of dance is very fluid. He put that into this scene, being as fluid and slithery as a snake is.
Do your research before passing judgments. :)
carpex3diem19 1 year ago
@carpex3diem19 And what makes you think I don't know about Bob Fosse's style?? He just so happens to be one of my favorite choreographers and film directors. Ok, I admit I didn't know the story of The Little Prince so I didn't know about the snake. I understood only a few basic things from seeing this clip, but it doesn't stop me from being entitled to disagree with Fosse's choreographic directions here. Just cause I understood the concept doesn't mean I had to absolutely love it.
Troublemaker1991 1 year ago
@Troublemaker1991 The real context is 1974, before we saw pedophilia in everything. Take it as it is, a snake that's trying to sting a victim danced by an incredible choreographer/dancer who was still amazing in middle age.
deirdrebounds 10 months ago
@Troublemaker1991 Many things can be interpreted incorrectly when taken out of context. When I first watched this movie, I never thought Bob Fosse was pulling a Michael Jackson on this kid.
Fergussimo77 10 months ago
@Troublemaker1991 Well, he is trying to seduce him, but not in any sexual way, (though admittedly one particular move looked a bit iffy"sit right down upon a snake in the grass" and "all's well that ends"), but I think its more like the snake in the Garden of Eden kind of thing. After all he is trying to get the little boy to let him bite and kill him! And from the bits I've seen this isn't exactly a movie strictly for kids.

CKisSUP1 1 year ago
@CKisSUP1 You're entitled to your opinion about Bob Fosse's dancing ability, but you have to give him credit for creating some of the moves that became MJ's signature dancing style. Fosse choreographed over a dozen broadway shows and quite a few movies, and there's no denying the man was an original, and very talented too.
lazybones2000 1 year ago
@lazybones2000 And that's what I said : "Je veux bien reconnaître qu'il y a certaines postures dont MJ a du s'inspirer". And I agree with saying that he was an original and that he was talented in creating choregraphies for shows and movies etc...but to me, he's not a good dancer. But he doesn't need to be good at dance to create dance after all.

KeepTrue56 2 years ago 23
@KeepTrue56 The difference is that Fred Astaire gave Bill Robinson his due credit. Michael gave James Brown, Fred Astaire, and Jeffrey Daniels credit. He didn't do this Fosse to the degree that he had with others. It almost seems as if the Michael Jackson Machine of that time purposely sabotaged Fosse's career. Fosse's career declined a year after MJ's Thriller. Coincidence? Maybe not.
MsReeReeChiq 1 year ago 2
@MsReeReeChiq what are you babbeling about.. are you saying MJ
sought out to sabatoge fosses career? MJ Loved and respected all dancers from those times.. and MJ MAKES IT KNOWN that James brown jackie wilson and fred astaire are his main major influence along with street dance.. lol.. Bob fosse is a legend.. who cares if his career dimmed down after mjs thriller... thats life, everyones prime comes to an end... however there still legends
KeepTrue56 1 year ago
@KeepTrue56 @KeepTrue56 Babbling - I think not!
MsReeReeChiq 1 year ago
@KeepTrue56 I care if Fosse's career dimmed, because he worked hard. I care that Michael had to face so much adversity because of vicious lies. I care because Michael worked hard. I feel that those who work hard to create - create - create something and promote and maintain it as well should be given their due credit. They deserve it. I don't care if they are a legend or not.
