@dkslfjgh I got mine at Radio Shack. They are also available from many internet sites. Can be a little pricy with all the features but a basic scanner is all you need for railroads.
@bubba2781 And you can use it to determine when and where a train is coming? It would help to know when certain freight trains are coming. I like to watch freight trains but I never know when they're going to go through my area.
@dkslfjgh what you get is the train to dispatcher and train to train communications. CSX trains for example call out each signal block they come to so by hearing this you can tell what train is in the area and if it has passed or is approaching your location. Sometimes dispatchers will advise a train of others in the area letting you know what is coming up. You will need to learn the train symbols for your area as well as the blocks they call out so you can figure out what is going on.
where do you get those radios where you can hear the train crews conversations?

It is most likely a commercial airliner creating a condensation trail at high altitude.

Did the bells stop ringing after the gates went down?

Yeah, this crossing the bells stop when the gates are down. The next crossing up the line rings all the time - gets kind of annoying really.
