@MrGangleyMoose Perhaps if you understood that its actually a 3.9L engine that has to be thrashed to death just to get 185bhp out of it you might appreciate why rotary's have gone no where in 50 years because its a crap piece of engineering. More than 50 years after being invented there is a very good reason why the only visible sign of rotary engines is the Mazda RX......They are crap in every respect, other than size, when compared to piston engines.

Sick of hearing these guys saying 'Rotary Engine waa' . Primarily because they are narrating in Japanese but referring to the powerplant by it's english name, so as to imply that there's no way of saying 'rotary engine' in their own language? I'm spanish and we'd say 'motor rotatorio'... we don't run around saying Rotary Engine!
The rotary is a clever design. But it has problems. Its thermodynamic efficiency is poor. It makes less power for the fuel it uses than a piston engine. But it can process large amounts of fuel so its potential to make power is big. It just doesnt make it efficiently. Its revvy nature is exciting. I prefer the torque of a piston motor myself, but my friend has a 650hp 20b rx7 and that is just nuts. Even if he is selling it to get a GT-R.
@slickstrings A piston engine is wasting lots of energy just by the foolish counteracting piston movement. Rotation is always better than up-down-movement, since there is no change of direction. The problem with Wankel engine is that the money for development is not even 1% of that spent on the crappy steam-engine-design piston motors.
@MillyVanillification mate, fact is fact. The way it functions develops the charicteristics it has. From a physics perspective, rotating mass sounds great. Mecanically, it doesnt produce a practical power delivery or an efficient torque band. And in the case of a rotary engine, trying to get it to burn fuel well and make use of a clever idea is problematic. If it was an amazing invention with loads of potential, engineers would jump on it world over. Its clever.but has little application.
certain people should only own these rotary powered RX's...for they are not for everybody. The amount of oil consumption & fuel, is always an issue in todays market, but if you can see past that, it can be a very rewarding driving experience
@6UNLEASHED i hear ya mate, and thats exactly what i do. i absolutly love rotaries! i cant imagine my life with having one or 2 to drive everyday! lol
you people talk about rotary engines like if they were just invented....they are the oldest kind of engine....remember when we had to pull on a stick to turn our cars on? those r rotary. Problem with rotary is that once they go you cannot remanufactor it....you need a new block. Not like pistons...just get the next mesurememnt and continue burning the road
i can tell you have the 80% of the tme its improper maintenance and just not knowing how to treat the engine ex not leting it warm up running low octane fuel, not keeping an eye on oil, the rotory just needs a little more attention than other engines but thats just the trade off but it is not unlikely tho have one out last a pistion engine if its properly mantianed and cared for

it is for sure a achievement and cool to have a different engine then every one else. and there is not much problems with the newer rx8s anymore, but its not really the "better choice" in buying a bang for your buck engine. its fun engine, but you get less hp, less toque, less on gas, but it looks great ,handles great, and sounds great, but there are cars like the 370z that have all of this benefits and more. i am a r8 fan, i am saying the facts. i can see why people think they are junk

It was named on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 2004, 2005, and 2006. It also took home 1st place on Car and Driver's "Four of a Kind" comparison test.
alot of rotary fans are going to be upset when i say this, but i think mazda made a mistake when they built the rx8. they should have turbocharged it for more torque push this 1 1/2 ton car, it would be faster and more pleasureable to drive, or atleast made the car lighter than it is.

I second that thought. I just don't have the money to replace or rebuild that motor. Ask any Mazda mechanic how often they have to replace the motor in the rx8 and you be surprise how often.
i just hope mazda keeps its new cars light weight and i think it should bring cars with rotary turbo motors back into production, also make a new derivative of the 20b motor (is very hard to find)
This vid made me so proud to own my RX8. I love my car and how its different from every other car. I love being different. It just drives so smooth and corners so beautifully. Yeah you're not gonna break any records at the drag strip but driving in a straight line is boring, I love drifting and taking corners fast.
I heard the RX8 is a great car (what I believe too) but I also heard from a Mazda service manager that they are a hassle to maintain. But if your educated about the car and the rotary engine its not so bad. Anyways, I would defiantly trade my 6 for one hehe.
Many manufacturer's whined that the rotary engine was an unfair advantage after Le Mans 24 Hrs in 1991, getting it banned. Same sort of whining by Porsche and others in the current Gran Am that got Mazda rev-limited to a hobbling 8k RPM.
yup .. not much left of a theory once it becomes fact. He probably feels stupid for spending thousands more for a top notch car than he had too. lol There's a sucker born every minute & a swallower born every 5.
it is because of the way they built it, the wanted a coupe/four dorr....I liek it and the 09' is goign to look great! plus you cant really argue with the 50:50 weight distribution
I've gotta say, the rx7 is alright in terms of design. The styling is kind of plain in my opinion, its very similar to the third gen/fourth gen Pontiac Firebirds of the time, albeit a lot smoother and of course unique in its own way. Older RX's were really just knock offs of other's designs in my eyes, the oldest were very similar to Nissan's all the way to the Rx7-FB.
That being said, I really dig the RX8's styling over the RX7s. If it was a bit sleaker it'd be amazing, as it is now, its great
I have an 81 1st gen rxheaven,13B Raceing beat intake 650 holley with nos ports{no nos yet} 15" panasport rims, z rated michelin tires. I eat Mustangs for breakfast, lunch and Dinner. You cant beat superior german/japanese work.Rotor head forever. Thanks for the good vibe!peace
You dont need to know Japanese, Or speak it to know and that Mazda Rotary engines are head of there time. And to know that they are the shit!!!!! Dont think so..check out the Mazda FUARI Concept.
i just got a mazda rx7 with a 13b rotary engine, and i need to know if someone could tell me where i can find the parts for the engine, its missing some parts, well, i also need to know id theyre expensive. help =[
Rotaries got a pretty bad reputation for reliability thanks to retarded twin turbo owners who kept pushing their boost till they popped an apex seal. That, or they sent their tuning to be done by apes.
In stock form, the rotary has very little reliability problems. It can be driven hard, and it won't die on you. Just remember all your maintenance procedures.
i think this is a realy briliant and more than genious that they came out of rotary engines and it its impresive that a tuned 20B can rev out at 11x100 rpm if modified near perfect
Its a two stroke cause it fires on every cycle. tolerances change over the life of a rotary, it needs to be more precise than the piston engine, once it starts to lose its tolerances due to wear it breaks down rapidly. 150 to 200k is there general life span. Some piston engines last to 400k sometimes longer. Depends how you drive and maintanence.
Its too bad the rotary doesent last as long as conventional engines. Its not as efficient due to it being a 2 stroke. But it is alot simpler, less moving parts(three main to be exact). I own a 2nd gen and there shit loads of fun.
...how exactly is it a 2 stroke engine? intake, compression, fire, and exhaust... the rotary engine has all these. i think its more efficient than a piston engine in many ways. and why won't it last as long as a piston engine?? it has nothing to break! no pistons, connecting rods, valves, cylinders, etc. not sure where you're getting your sources.
hmm...seems to be too much english in there for the japanese to understand without some basic classes. but in any case, this is pretty cool, showing the manufacturing and the actual coverless running
Stezii...I love this damn car, but it guzzles gas like no other...depending on how you treat it, I have a 2006 RX8 with 5200 miles on it, so I DO treat it good obviously, 18 mpg in the city...yeah...Corvettes get the same thing, But I love my RX8
the rotary engine actually doesn't chug gas. its just that mazda was so set on have PERFECT weight distribution, they but the gas tank in front of the rear axles. so they could only fit a 12 gallon tank in that small space. my RX8 is the same way. one of just a few problems with it: not a lot of torque, and a zippo for a gas tank :(
You're wrong about the consumpstion. RX8's suck up A LOT of gas, just as much as a V8. The engine is so innovative, and shows a lot of creativity. Even though the gas mileage is low, the car is still amazing and I want one XD.
The script is going on about how the rotary engine was going to die with the RX-7 but thanks to Mazda skill and craft and pride its spirit can come back to life in the RX-8.
Thank you Mazda, and thank God for Felix Heinrich Wankel. Thank you Mazda for keeping the rotary engine alive.
To all the people who bash the engine on it's fuel economy, why do you care about fuel economy in a SPORTS car?? If you want good gas milage get a damn econo car like a Fit or Yaris.
I can't wait for the next rotory powered car!

FYI...
The company that built the rotary engine on the RX7 for Mazda refused to built the new RX8 engine and said it was a weak design and other stuff.
When Mazda finally announced this to the public last year in Febuary 2008, the RX-8's value literally dropped around $8,000 over night.
Thats what happens when you go cheap on a sport car. Yup, yup.
I have a 300ZX TT and when the new GTR came out, it drove the value of my Z up since it designed closely to the 300ZX's engine. Yey :)

Anyways, I would defiantly trade my 6 for one hehe.
wolf1010 2 years ago
Many manufacturer's whined that the rotary engine was an unfair advantage after Le Mans 24 Hrs in 1991, getting it banned. Same sort of whining by Porsche and others in the current Gran Am that got Mazda rev-limited to a hobbling 8k RPM.

That would have been the perfect advertising gimmick. You can't buy that kind of publicity ! hahaha

He's trying to make the case that a Rotary works in theory but not in practice. He fails at it, of course.
Cordius 3 years ago
yup .. not much left of a theory once it becomes fact. He probably feels stupid for spending thousands more for a top notch car than he had too. lol There's a sucker born every minute & a swallower born every 5.

You can't say the RX8 suck, it still have enough power and didn't hog the fuel, thats pretty impressive for a rotary engine.
loo85 3 years ago 2
thats why the rx 8 has out sold the entire rx-7 series combined...
adityagoyal 3 years ago 2
it just doesnt have that look the rx-7 has......so sexy and sleek.....rx-8's are fat and round as shit

it is because of the way they built it, the wanted a coupe/four dorr....I liek it and the 09' is goign to look great! plus you cant really argue with the 50:50 weight distribution

GILZUR 3 years ago
I've gotta say, the rx7 is alright in terms of design. The styling is kind of plain in my opinion, its very similar to the third gen/fourth gen Pontiac Firebirds of the time, albeit a lot smoother and of course unique in its own way. Older RX's were really just knock offs of other's designs in my eyes, the oldest were very similar to Nissan's all the way to the Rx7-FB.
That being said, I really dig the RX8's styling over the RX7s. If it was a bit sleaker it'd be amazing, as it is now, its great

Just remember all your maintenance procedures.

i think this is a realy briliant and more than genious that they came out of rotary engines and it its impresive that a tuned 20B can rev out at 11x100 rpm if modified near perfect
that is dangerous and amazing
JDMxxSupraTT 4 years ago
V4 has existed but not really anymore.
The "V" in V4 simply means the shape of the engine. The cylinders form a V shape.
My engine is an inline 4, 4 cylinders in a line. This is not a V4. 22R <-- Popular and long lasting engine. woot woot!
prodigy2k7 4 years ago
Its a two stroke cause it fires on every cycle. tolerances change over the life of a rotary, it needs to be more precise than the piston engine, once it starts to lose its tolerances due to wear it breaks down rapidly. 150 to 200k is there general life span. Some piston engines last to 400k sometimes longer. Depends how you drive and maintanence.
driftability 4 years ago
Its too bad the rotary doesent last as long as conventional engines. Its not as efficient due to it being a 2 stroke. But it is alot simpler, less moving parts(three main to be exact). I own a 2nd gen and there shit loads of fun.
driftability 4 years ago
...how exactly is it a 2 stroke engine? intake, compression, fire, and exhaust... the rotary engine has all these. i think its more efficient than a piston engine in many ways. and why won't it last as long as a piston engine?? it has nothing to break! no pistons, connecting rods, valves, cylinders, etc. not sure where you're getting your sources.

Stezii...I love this damn car, but it guzzles gas like no other...depending on how you treat it, I have a 2006 RX8 with 5200 miles on it, so I DO treat it good obviously, 18 mpg in the city...yeah...Corvettes get the same thing, But I love my RX8
BlackCamaro1995 4 years ago
the rotary engine actually doesn't chug gas. its just that mazda was so set on have PERFECT weight distribution, they but the gas tank in front of the rear axles. so they could only fit a 12 gallon tank in that small space. my RX8 is the same way. one of just a few problems with it: not a lot of torque, and a zippo for a gas tank :(
wasp010 4 years ago
It has a 15.9 gallon tank
potatonoob 3 years ago
do you know some more cars with this engine? becuse this engine should be in ALL CARS, no exeptions, lot of power, little of consumption
stezii 4 years ago
You're wrong about the consumpstion. RX8's suck up A LOT of gas, just as much as a V8. The engine is so innovative, and shows a lot of creativity. Even though the gas mileage is low, the car is still amazing and I want one XD.
mcromance1 4 years ago
i dont know what he is saying. im so lost. i love rotary!
red61strat 4 years ago
The script is going on about how the rotary engine was going to die with the RX-7 but thanks to Mazda skill and craft and pride its spirit can come back to life in the RX-8.
tachikaze222 4 years ago
Thank you Mazda, and thank God for Felix Heinrich Wankel. Thank you Mazda for keeping the rotary engine alive.
To all the people who bash the engine on it's fuel economy, why do you care about fuel economy in a SPORTS car?? If you want good gas milage get a damn econo car like a Fit or Yaris.
