  • Just Incredible! I'd never heard of Ackerman before just recently. WOW!

  • i fuckin jack off to hocksuckle bitch nigger ass bith

  • About 2 years ago I was looking for W.Ackerman videos on you tube. At a certain point in the suggestion bar I saw "Michael Hedges and Will Ackerman - Hawkcircle" and I asked myself "Who is Michael Hedges?" so, I looked at the vid and I remained astonished, but straight afterwards I clicked on the video "Aerial Boundaries" and my life changed forever. What a wonderful music Michael and what a wonderful soul...thank you.

  • Wow MusicalFuturo! Lucky you! RIP MIchael you are deeply missed!

  • i have huge amounts of respect for these 2 men that can create such moving music from just the raw acoustic guitar, it seems in todays era of music everything is electrified and the true beauty of the acoustic guitar is forgotten. RIP Mike and bless you Will.

  • Wolftrap has always been my favorite venue since I have lived in Reston from 1973. I saw Pat Metheny 3 times there in the mid to late 80's. Pat won't play there anymore for some reason. But when I saw this show I was speechless too!!!! I have albums of both William Ackerman and Micheal Hedges since the 80's when I first heard them. I was unaware they were taping this show. This is a magical piece with both of them together.

  • I watched this on PBS a million or more years ago! I still have an audio cassette I made of it... thank you for posting!

  • @koaguilds the 111 dimwits that gave this thumbsdown are just jealous guitarists who can't play with this emotion and skill so they hate it. punks

  • @koaguilds i mean 11 dimwits

  • thanks java,!!

  • My two favorite artists, saw Michael before he passed away at Humphreys in San Diego with his line up of guitars playing on a bouncy ball, and now with William Ackerman of Windham Hill Records who is also an amazing artist, CLIMBING IN GEOMETRY.

  • So serene and peaceful.

  • Wow, I thought I recognized this place as Wolf Trap... hard to believe it was 25 years ago. A variety of WH artists played there +- that year, and they were all extraordinary. These shows and thunder and lightning in the last movement of Shostakovich's 5th were the highlights of my time spent out there ;-)

  • What a pretty sort of mantra kind of piece. The sound is near perfect.

  • beautiful,

  • back in bout 80 someone turned me on to him and robbie basho, stayed w/ me have to figure out the tunings

  • Maravilla de talentos!!!

  • These two defined the music of my growing up. Can still remember cranking up the stereo, two three foot high speakers, in my basement, lights off, spacing out to this, or Bach or Pink Floyd. But a special place for Hedges and Ackerman. Michael can make a guitar fill a space as much as a piano - that's something!

  • @type3secretion Im definitely greatful for Hedges and everything that blossomed from his inspiration however I feel more greatful to you if I was honest. I used to listen to Rap before this. Then I heard Hedges and life changed. Since then I have seen Tommy Emmanuel, Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Erik Mongrain, Antoine Dufour and Maneli Jamel. But I havent just seen them I've met them too and got pictures and chatted etc. You introduced me to a whole new life culture. Thanks for that :)

  • So good! So sad Michael is gone now, but he will be with us again! Will, your music is spiritual and eternal!

  • his leopard print pants are awesome, RIP mike

  • Will Ackerman is playing live at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ on August 14th, 2010. purchase tickets at - TRTC[dot]org

  • total classic

  • Goosebumps at 1:19

  • Michael Hedges was one of the most extraordinary musical talents of two centuries.

I only heard recently that he had passed from us. Only the good die young. His style, his sensibility, and his sweet sense of emotion will live in me and those of us that loved his music. And those regards belong to Will Ackerman as well, except that I hope his heart will live and beat among us for a long, long time to come.

  • Will's compositions can open up a vastness of space the size of the grand canyon in your living room, or pose some mathematical riddle to ponder over musically.

  • I third it. I saw Hedges many times, including a week before he died and Ackerman is quite gifted as well.Opinions are like assholes....everybody has one and some opinions ARE assholes :)

  • I second that

  • they are both very original voices that I'm sure are alot deeper that what we all know of them. I'm sure they can both play their asses off. Sounds like you are simply envious because they are doing their thing, and doing it well, and you're not. That's sad.

  • it makes me cry...

  • True Beauty........................

  • Is it just me, or does Hedges kind of resemble Jaco Pastorius, but of guitar? Otherworldly...

  • tab...please....tab....please......

  • lol tabs? i always have to laugh at guitarists asking for tabs for something like this. if you were anywhere near good enough to play this type of shit you'd realize tabs are not the way to get there

  • @semihibernation i mean tab for hedges part... -.-

  • rimani sempre un grande anche da lassu',Michael...

  • Stan2211stan I sure would donate that kind of money to PBS for a cd or dvd of this concert!

  • With all of the instant media today it would be a very beautiful thing if PBS and Windham Hill got together and made available this entire evening which took place at Wolftrap. Every Act was outstanding!!!!!!!! I'd happily donate $150 to PBS for the entire set - not just what was aired - but the complete concert.

  • Hawk Circle

the studio version is on the "New Age & New Sounds Vol. 150"

  • It's also on the early 'An Evening With Windham Hill Live' album. As much as Michael Hedges was a genius, the song as performed on that album is with piano (and without Hedges) - and is staggeringly beautiful.

  • Perferct!

  • Hedges was wearing this outfit when I first saw him at a club in Orlando on the "Watching My Life Go By" tour...he was amazing.

  • Wow what a very Beautiful Song! This is a Masterpiece for sure, so majestic it sounds like it belongs to a Movie Theme I love it so much...

  • The only words I can conjure up right now are, dear god...

    *chills*

  • I was fortunate enough to see the both of them together in the mid 80s

  • Old timer here - Followed him when he was playing in Baltimore in clubs so small, you couldn't order drinks made in the blender when he was playing. My good friend and I were probably his first groupies. He had just graduated from Peabody Conservatory, was teaching during the day and playing in resaurants and clubs and night. He was perfection even back then, with harmonics to die for and a good voice too. Miss you, Michael.

  • I like your comment MusicaFuturo

    R.I.P. Michael

  • Your a lucky dude, I discovered him by watching a Windham Hill VHS tape in '88 called Waters Path, It normally will take a few times to like what I hear, but Michael Hedges touched a delightful nerve in me that etched itself in my memory, his music is hauntingly beautiful. Wish he were still with us.

  • I knew Michael from the Horse U came in on Dundalk, Maryland. Use to pass the hat for Michael.

  • @MusicaFuturo That had to be Jo's Organic Bar

  • When was this concert?

Did they ever record this in a studio and release this?

Thanks for posting this -- who needs laudatory adjectives when there's such music...

  • what a cool tune!

it's such a good idea how Hedges changes the pitch on some of his harmonics pressing the strings above the nut!

    great post javaman!

  • WOLFTRAP

  • Stunning. Thank you so much for the upload.

It's terrific that the legacy of Michael Hedges is being maintained by committed and generous fans on the Internet.

Hopefully a legitimate DVD release will be forthcoming. 10 years too late, but we live in hope...

    :(

  • Im with you on this. All of Hedg's performances, on a dvd set. Id buy that in a heart beat. I remember seeing this on WTVP Ch47 in Peoria nearly 20 years ago. It was from a series called, "onstage at Woldtrap"

  • I just searched his name on Netflix. No results.

  • *Wow...* beautiful x

  • Thanks for this nice upload!

Another great Hedges performance and a new discovery for me (Will).

  • hah I'm just the opposite. new discovery for me was michael hedges!

  • Thanks for posts and info springing: this clip looked and sounded soooo familiar to me because i WAS THERE at this Vienna VA concert and remember this tune sooo clearly. I remember wills head and michaels slow tremolo (1:43) as if it were yesterday.. not 20some years ago.. so beautiful; powerful and full of the surprise of life..

  • 77,164 vies on 01/01/09 and I must have 7K of them. Two of the greatest guitarists ever - both on the same stage - playing brilliantly - but only 77K views? While Charlie the Unicorn has millions upon millions of views? WTF

  • Pure Brilliance. RIP Michael Hedges.

  • I think some guy just posted another video from the same concert - it's Hedges covering "A Love Bizarre" with a drum accompaniment. It's the only time I've ever seen him use or even need drums, and it's pretty grooving. I think it has to be the same concert, he's wearing the same horrible outfit in the video. What concert is this?

  • It's from the July 1986 at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia. type3secretion just posted a bunch of these clips in very high quality. Check out the Because It's There.

  • Dude that outfit is awesome!

  • 2:59-amazing turn point of the song, beautiful musical symmetry between the two guitars.

  • man, such effects from the 2 guitars...

  • n e body know the tab or tuning to this ?

  • absolutely brilliant piece of work

  • 1:21- he hits a harmonic and then pushes down on the part of the string between the nut and the tuner to get a wha wha effect.Awesome

  • Michael Hedges = genius. His pants = less than genius.

    ;)

  • Didn't anyone ever tell You?

    "Tone is in the pants."

  • You certainly have an opinion of David Lindley, then, too, don't you?

  • isn't his the same melody as paco de lucia playing with the other guy called lotus feet? hawk circle with piano sounds better

  • Just when I think I've heard the most incredible guitar work, I come across this. 5 star!

  • That's just too much, too much feeling. It's almost as if there is no body, no hands, no being between this man's creative spark and us.

  • Good God, There is nothing better than this. We are so blessed to have this experience. God bless you Michael and God forgive us for our sins.

  • great, guys!

    5 stars!!!

  • I'd take it up the ass if I could assimilate some of Hedges's talent into my own playing.

  • Blackmofasa92, he was amazing to watch. I saw him in the mid 80's. It was a performance, I'll never forget. He definitely left the planet too soon but he inspired so many. Today, there are many amazing players puching the boundaries just as he did.

  • hahahaha....I wouldn't take it quite that far black but I sure understand the sentiment..ahahahaha

  • Take what up the ass exactly?? A Martin D-28? Or a Gibson J-200? LOL Either would be a rather tight fit!! :-) I know what you mean. I tell my friends if I had just 1/10th the talent of Stevie Ray Vaughan I'd be very happy. That applies to Michael Hedges too.

  • All you morons blabbering about whether either of these two guys were/are gay need to take off your diapers..Both these guys are/were guitar geniuses...end of discussion

  • booksum : Agreed, perfectly put. Plus both are / were married with children. There's a fund still available for the children and widow of Hedges, who died in a car crash (skidded off the road in the rain over a cliff, I believe). See Michael Hedges website with many great song samples.

  • R.I.P. Michael Hedges

    (Dec 31, 1953-Dec 02, 1997)

  • michael hedges is one of the best out there....eddie van halen eat your heat out. will we love you to.

  • They are not and never were homosexuals...who cares. What does who they sleep with have anything to do with their talent or ability to engage an audience? Why does the discussion have to go there? Who cares? They are great. I don't care if they fuck their goats. It is their business. They are extremely talented, adult men and we are blessed to let their sounds enter our ears.

Consider yourself blessed and keep listening to good music.

  • splendid stuff!

  • Lapis - it WAS splendid! Thanks for the send.

I never heard a guitar sound like that before. :)

  • THey are NOT and NEVER were homosexuals. I have known William since I was a young boy and I have always loved and cherished his music. He is a melodic and spiritual performer. Always a nice, tender-hearted and real musician and person. He never looked like or dressed gay, but also this video was of a few years ago to, and sad to say we lost MIchael Hedges in 1997, but he like Will is always remembered as unique, beautiful and pioneering musicians. AWESOME!

  • How nicely put. I have a vision of the world embracing this music and all like it and see a world full of happyness

  • I saw Michael at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall 2 or 3 times. When the concert was and over and most people were leaving I noticed a small crowd gathering in front of the stage. From my perch in the balcony I decided to stay to see what was going on. Michael came out, sat at the end of the stage with his feet dangling off and signed autographs and spoke with his fans.I had never seen this before or since. The Hall will never be the same. I also come to tears thinking about him.

  • This piece of music is so incredible. Thank you for posting it...

  • saw ackerman a year or so ago at the troy(ny) savings bank music hall, an acoustical mecca, and got to talk with him after the show. in talking with him i mentioned what a treat it would be to see michael hedges there, i didn't know that he had passed away, and he almost came to tears thinking about him. thank you will for windham hill and the gifts you have given us. what a treat this video is. thank you java. ian

  • con dos guitarritas de madera!!!

  • your the fag bitch.

  • exactly. faggish? get out, this is one of the most powerful pieces of music ive ever heard in my life. the last thing i was looking at was their clothes

  • Absolutely beautiful. I love Michael's music and Will's of course. Two of my all time favorite guitarists and I have many of their albums. Has anyone posted "A Region of Clouds"? My all time favorite song by Will. I'd love to have that here.

Thanks, Javaman, for posting this great piece of inspirational music.

  • Will ackerman is my favorite musician. he inspired me to start playing guitar some time ago. my favorite piece is The opening of doors. I love the emotional sound, it comes right through all the time.

  • I thought 'how is this gonna work without the piano', but hey I am mesmerized by the beauty of this performance... thrilling, enticing... music at it's peak.

  • Ackerman's guitar stirs up some very strong emotions within me. It puts me a deep state of introspection and awakened sensory perception. It's my favorite music to listen to on a rainy, reflective day. "Conferring With the Moon" & "Childhood & Memory" are must have CD's, in my opinion.

  • This is awesome guitar and makes my heart sing! Michael and Will - absolutely the best. Are there more Will Ackerman videos somewhere? Can't seem to find any...

  • There's a good few in my "Guitar Playlist" (not actually played by Will Ackerman)

  • Thanks! Love your list. What happened to Will's "Processional" video?

  • I don't know, it's really weird, that alsaways seems to happen when videos are added to playlists...

  • I listened to this music carefully..and may be ..its just my imagination..but I heard a story ...and its a complete story..kind of funny but what can I do? Can lie to myself

  • omg, almost seems that this guitar is part of his body and has always been, he knows it so well.

  • Will... YOU .. you rock and you know it.. I love you like a brother. Thank you for sharing your love, skill and freaking AMAZING TALENT with us here in Idaho.. We'll never forget that..

    tanya

  • Coz people don't pay attention..

  • this... like full fledged music has what i can never find in mainstream music

  • I'm totally in love with this particular music. I think this is the example of extreme brilliance...Will Ackerman ...thanks for letting Michael jam up with you..hehe..its like full fledged music with just 2 guitars

  • michael RIP. and amazed someone else loves "Santos" too!

  • how did he die?

  • car accident

  • This is a personal favourite of mine along with "Santos & The Well Travelled Bear" Damn man I have to learn that song.

  • I have never witnessed a man make a guitar cry until I saw Hedges playing here

  • Join the new Fingerstyle Guitar Club of Brooklyn: brooklynfingerstyle dot com

  • did i just hear will say he performed this song with a penis ?

  • A pianist - George Winston.

  • it takes me on a space journey -- thank you for sharing :)

  • Between the strugle of the knowing and the unknown is I know nothing.

  • Between micheymofus and MichaelADtwin I'm not sure who's kidding and who's an idiot.

  • Two of the best from a musical revolution called Windham Hill. This is an incredible performance. We miss you Michael!

  • this video gave me chills down my spine, so beautiful!

  • Haha. MichaelADtwin I think you've just ended my search for who is the biggest and most utter moron in the world. Are you mentally retarded? If you arementally retarded just say now and I will comment no further as I have a strictly *no flaming diabled people* policy.

  • Thanks so much for posting this video.I remember watching it on PBS.I saw Michael Hedges play live at the Edmonton Folk Festival before he passed away. Rest in peace Michael!

  • thnx

  • God dammit I just love Michael Hedges. Go to 2:38 then 2:48 and listen to the sounds there on his guitar. Define genius. A person or persons who have an unusual mental ability and understanding of brilliance. Michael Hedges

  • God dammit I just love Michael Hedges. Go to 2:38 then 2:48 and listen to the sounds there on his guitar. Define genius. A person or persons who have an unusual mental ability and understanding of brilliance. Michael Hedges

  • wow its nice to see michael grooving on a melody so gently

  • Michael ain't dead, he has just gone home.

  • Michael Hedges died in 1997 on December 2nd. He was on his way home to his girlfriend after landing off a plane recently. He skid off a wet road and fell down a 120ft cliff. I say thanks for the art you left us brother. RIP

  • To Mickeymorfus or whatever stupid name you choose to go buy-You are truly disgusting & your awfull comments are an insult to the memory of a great artist, all his fans who miss him & to you tube so please save them to yourself since they are of no use to anyone else human.

  • how care about the fkn guitar just listen to the music and enjoy

  • Well Said!

  • Oh, this made me laugh! "Well Said!" Ha! Hilarious!

  • What's so funny fuking piece of shit? Do you know something about guitars? Or should I asked, do you know something about music? Fuking moron!!!

  • I heard he crashed his "BMW" in a ditch and was found a considerable time later. Sad

  • Does anyone know about Michael guitars? Thanks for posting this:-)

  • I'm pretty sure the beat up one he was always seen with is a martin D-28.. not sure of the year or if it was a custom. The headstock appears to be missing the 'martin' logo.

  • Its a Duborg Guitar...

  • Hey guys, if you find a melody jump on. Hedges was great, but this is a wank fest.

  • Comment removed

  • that's a horrible shame about Hedges he really did rule, what is also a shame is that outfit that he has on, I pray to god he wasn't buried in that.

  • i love this song, i think the tab is in a book called windam hill guitar sampler vol 1 or something like that

  • does anyone know how to get tabs of that?

  • Absolutely beautiful!

Michael, you always played music with deep passion... forever missing you...

  • Can anyone tell me how Michael Hedges died? I heard it was "In an accident". Well that is pretty vague.

    RSVP

  • car accident per wikipedia. shame. this guy kicks ass.

  • rpoland has some awesome stuff. Hey! This is the first time I have heard this, truely from the heart and soul of both players. Just fantastic to hear and need I say very emotionally touching. Very beautiful sound they perform. Thanks for this post Javaman.

  • If you are into acoustic, check out the videos on my profile.

  • Absolutely breathtaking. Geniuses, both of them.

  • Michael's music is the best....rick
