If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
All you people comparing one drummer to another or guitar players or what ever miss the whole point of music, that its a form of expression, not a competition. Why not appreciate each musician for their individual abilities ??
MrYouknowwhat my friend you one dumb mother fucker. How is Neil Peart overrated. Rush isnt even in the Hall of Fame, and you think hes overrated. Overrated is someone whose celebrity and Name supercedes their ability. Neil Peart is the best drummer in the world. PUT RUSH IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME..
What the hell? So he's overrated because it's not your type, and he's not good because he doesn't have a damn harness and a car seat playing shit that has no art vertically in the air? Just get the hell off of here.
@millsykid13 the most embarassing thing from the rock n roll hall of fame is:ZZ Top (c'mon!!!!!!!)is in there and rush don't....i gave up ...fuck all the press. Rush has the mix between Moon,Bonham and Hanks. No one can beat this.best band in the world..Rush
@nevinkel lmfao, even people that love him say he's over-rated, he's realy not as good as everyone makes him out to be "check out neil peart, best drummer in the world" in watch it and i see this? LOL
@MrYouknowwhat why are you laughing your ass off? Anyway, he's 57 years old and drumming better than your top rated drummers these days. Joey Jordison= overrated.
@nevinkel wow! i didnt know that joey jordison was one of my top drummers! anyway, i've never seen neil peart drumming vertical and spinning!! my favourite drummer is chris adler, not rated the best drummer, but in my opinion he is.
This is a really cool HNIC bit. Love Neil Peart. Why is it that whenever a drummer has a solo on YT, at least a few morons start spouting off about who is a better drummer. It is enough to say that all these guys are great drummers - is it possible to say who is the best? I say not. Different genres, different kits, different styles. Maybe we should have a contest to see who can do the best double stroke rolls at 400 bpm? Would that give us a winner? Just enjoy it. It's music.
Thought he performed perfectly for the SONG ... sometimes, less is more. He could have blazed this one - sounds better the way he did it ... just enough bombast to serve the song. Kudos !!!
I'm a big Peart fan, always will be. What is it about this project that irks me. Maybe I have just already heard all Peart's fills one too many times. This is licks from other RUSH songs cut and pasted unmeaningfully over the top. Even stuck a 'look what I can do' double handed crossover in there. Like I say, maybe I've been listening too long. I mean no disrespect to The Professor.
just went and listened to Simon Phillips, guitardude57. Pretty good, but I certainly didn't hear anything so extraordinary that would have made Peart stumble or struggle.
Nobody ever said that this hockey theme gig was the 'best of Peart.' It wasn't for him to show off all the coolest riffs.
Kind of like in Rush where the boys play what's appropriate for the arrangement and not just trying to show off. They've never needed to do that.
There can be only one...and it's Neil. All these other drummers listed learned from Neil. He took rock drumming "cool" (Bonham) to EXTRAORDINARY (Peart). The guy is legend.
What's the crime? How does a corporate decision affect yoy? I din't mean to be an ass, but what is the big deal about a 50 second song that's now on a different channel?
I think Neil Peart is one of the best for what he dose with the music he plays . Lets face it ,Rush music was cutting egde and some times still is . And yes guys like Bonham, Steve Gadds and all the rock, counrty drummer and Jazz guy are great . But if it was not for god like drummers like BUDDY RICH , LOU BELSOME . Will lets just say i would be washing cars other then drumming for a living . Horse Thief Rocks
I'm really trying to understand the vitriol surrounding this track. Peart I believe has pulled off a great balance his 'signature style and sound' - which is why he was commissioned to do this in the first place - with the Classic theme. He left a lot of notes and flourishes OUT that he could have crammed in if he so desired, but that's not what he does in Rush, and not what he did here!! :) And his blending of Rock, (a little) Latin, and a Lot of Jazz drumming in just one minute is amazing.
lots of stupid comments. idiots that say he sucks are..well..idiots. folks who think Bonham was a great drummer-well...you can say he's your favorite but he was no great drummer. tune in to the drum channel and look at real masters of the trade...like PEART.
Coming from a guitar dude who probably has no rhythm or sense of time whatsoever I'm sure Neil Peart is crying all the way to the bank over it. Ahhh! Boo hoo hoo!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's not a matter of best. It's a matter of taste. There are tons of drummers better than Peart. My favourite is Simon Phillips. Dennis Chambers is good, Love listening to Bonham. Sometimes I like Peart even, just not on this. He could have done so much better, this is like he made no effort at all.
A few years ago Peart organized a concert in honour of Buddy Rich "Burning for Buddy". If you want to check out drummers for comparison pick up the CD or watch clips if you can find them.
Once again, I didn't say Peart wasn't a good drummer, just massively over rated and I don't think this version of the song took much thought at all.
I agree. Neil is a great rock drummer, but seriously over-rated. People tout him as the greatest drummer in the world. He's quite possibly the most influential in the past 20 years...but far from the greatest.
Being popular doesn't make you the best. I think he is over-rated in the grand scheme of things. He's a phenominal rock drummer...probably my biggest influence. But to say he's the best in the world is ridiculous. People need to branch outside of the realm of Rush, and realize there are better musicians out there. (I'm a HUGE Rush fan by the way...seen them 11 times and counting)
So Devil...you're telling me that not one drummer in that whole group I mentioned is a better drummer than Neil? Two words: Vinnie Colaiuta. Look at some clips of Vinnie playing with Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, or live at the Baked Potato & you'll be eating your words. From my own experience-I;ve been drumming for 29 years, and can play 99% of any Rush song From La Villa Strangiato to The Main Monkey Business-flawlessly-but can't even comprehend some of the things that Vinnie plays.
Vinnie Colaiuta, Billy Cobham, Virgil Donati, Steve Smith, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Mike Portnoy, Peter Erskine (whom Neil is currently taking lessons from), Dennis Chambers, Tony Royster Jr, JoJo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Carter Beauford, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Will Calhoun, Chad Wackerman, Rod Morgenstein, Kenny Arnoff, Jeff Hamilton......Shall I continue?
@guitardude57 Are you fuckin retarded? You have to be maybe 12 years old and into Joey Jordison shit, because a statement like that can only come from a punk ass biotch.
It was very interesting to see how Peart arranged the hockey song. Since Geddy & Alex do most, if not all, of the main composing for Rush it was interesting to hear Peart work alone with this. I dig it.
1. it's a mishmash of the original theme - no surprise, since TSN paid for the rights. I doubt composer would have agreed to this - too flashy and formulaic. The only redeeming part is the drums. Pretty sad, original spread the meat throughout the band.
2. This is pure marketing ploy - get a big name in music to promote the theme and get people emotionally involved - "I love Neil's playing, ergo, I love the new theme".
@staminqia in neil's videos he cites his influences and says he uses certain tecniques as tributes to those who inspire him...Bonham was a big influence...
Bonham was the best at crossovers! I love Neil but he just doesnt compare to bonham, Bonham was in a league of his own. Neil needs two bass drums to do what Bonham could do with his bass!!!!
No one can duplicate two pedals with one. You can simulate short fills (by adding a floor tom) but not extended 16th or 32nd notes. Bonham had a great foot and rock technique but there reaches a point where it is physically impossible to play everything on one that two can.
I wouldn't worry too much about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a joke anyway. They seem to have some sort of mandate that they add at least one ancient motown group nobody cares about every year, along with a huge rock band as if they are equal...
sunrise2cd Yes Neil Peart is Canadian and our families grew up together. Best drummer ever and best NHL theme song ever. Only Neil could do such a great job !!!
Piece of crap, you for sure know nothing about music, great bands or drummers. Neil is one of the best in rock music. Let's see what you look like when your 58. Retire, Rush is the longest running band with the same line-up since he joined in 74. Bonham is dead, great drummer for sure. People like you should just stick to your porn sites and leave the music comments to musicians and music lovers

Cool that he was using both rock and jazz licks in this rendition.
The man has some serious percussion chops!
Way to go Neil!

sunrise2cd Yes Neil Peart is Canadian and our families grew up together. Best drummer ever and best NHL theme song ever. Only Neil could do such a great job !!!

How stupid was CBC for ignoring the importance of this theme song?! How hard are they kicking themselves now? Idiots.

that was a pretentious piece of crap - he looks old and tired - time to retire the old man
bonnigucci 2 years ago
Piece of crap, you for sure know nothing about music, great bands or drummers. Neil is one of the best in rock music. Let's see what you look like when your 58. Retire, Rush is the longest running band with the same line-up since he joined in 74. Bonham is dead, great drummer for sure. People like you should just stick to your porn sites and leave the music comments to musicians and music lovers
