a kata is like a song. and like a song it can work at its best with certain tempos and speed. Sometimes multiple speeds as in some parts are slow and some parts are fast and some parts kinda in the middle. rushing through it is not always the best. You start out as slow as you can so that you focus on the technique speed and power will come in time as you you become more familiar you can go fast but after you mastered it you need to find its true speed and rytham and then you are a karateka
... lol at you idiots trying to correct him on the kata ... it should be this , it shouldn't be that ... you have no idea who he is do you ?? , or what he has achieved in his karate life.
of course your all entitled to your opinion , and of course there may be small variations to the way YOU may do this kata in your club etc ,... but your mostly very wrong , this is how this kata SHOULD be done ! ... if you disagree , fine ! , but show me a better example ! ... he can do this kata all day btw !
After reading many of the comments to this video, I've decided to make a professional note to help non-karateka understand this video better. I assume this video was shot in a private setting and his intention was for his students to watch this video and learn. His form in general is JKF style Shotokan. He seems to be well versed in their style and would likely get a gold for even this small, humble performance. Also, I'm sure this sensei could perform a traditional kata if he needed to. ossu.
Very impressive. I think the karateka is demonstrating just how fiercely powerful and precise karate can be, and for simple video, he certainly succeeds. Obviously he would slow his kata down for daily practice.
@mactoucan no, he would certainly not slow down, quite the opposite, the faster you can perform the kata while trayning alone the better your mussels will remember the movement. (this is just how I learn, well me and most other students I know.) as you surely anderstand I am now only talking about the speed, on all your other statements I agree.
@IM2OFU - good point that doing a kata at speed can help it to become more instinctive, however I suppose there is some loss of form when one performs at speed. if form is highly developed through practicing individual moves, then perhaps it does not suffer so much during a fast kata. I think the main point here is whether the moves in the kata are executed precisely, and to get there a more deliberate practice seems to be a better route. only my opinion, I've not been in karate for a while.
i think it was a bit quick. you should take into thought that you are not attacking a person with fatal blows each move but practice using this kata to help wit balance and timing; not agility, speed and intimidation.
The back foot should be angled as he is doing zenkutsu datch. All depends how you've been taught. Regardless this guy is very strong and his kata extremely focused and powerful. Judging by his belt he's at least fourth dan.
@Kukluxkklan There are two kia's in Heian Shodan when going up and back down the centre as there are in all the basic goju katas like taikyoku jodan ich. They use the same basic I or H pattern shape on the floor.
He seems to have the focus and power, but he yells with the chi at the wrong time. He steps to heavily, though I am not sure if that is the training method. He seems to attribute more power then what seems as nessessary. Good kata nevertheless.
who said it should be about speed and sound? neither...
but I have to bow to the physical ability of this person. in good shape for sure. I doubt though with this kind of karate he would be able to repeat the same kata 20 times in row... his karate is based on his physical ability only which is kind of against the entire idea of it.
Good example for karateka how not to do Heian Shodan. Thx
before beeing WKF world Champion Kumite, Lefevre Junior was JKA (KUGB for England), and won also every championship that was there... and for a fighter, the kata he permormed was nice.... here it is slow, it is a video to learn for his student
check some of them on the net Alexis Davoine, 10 years, not bad
@gustavatwork we dont do it the same way as him here in denmark. We do it slower and smoother, so we can as you say do it 20 times in a row.Still good workout though!!
good done, i want to tell you some wordrs, muy bien lo tuyo, no te ofende un consejo?-Usa mas la cadera que beneficia en el negativo en los brazos.-y siempre pasa por tu centro de gravedad.- hasta pronto, CH de La Rioja- Argentina-
