This was the 1980 Coca-Cola 500 lap 57 Petty going into the tunnel(2) turn had the the front right wheel break because of the slots in the wheels. Back then you could have one of two styles of wheels 5 oval shapes slots or 8 round slots. Richard had been trying both but liked the round ones better because it kept the brakes cooler. There had been problems earlier at dover with these same wheels but they were left unchanged. Going into this race Dale only had a 48 point lead after this it was 144
