  • this reminds me of Genghis Blues both excellent documentaries . . . . .amazing stories of both men

  • this is too good... i have a similar story... got attracted to ICM, but u are a born talent.

  • Great enthusiasm and grand dedication! Keep it up, you will surely reach your goal someday!

  • I'm in love with this man.

  • What would you call the type of music that comes in at 1:15? I'd like to find more of it.

  • the instrument that is played is called sarangi..it is hindustani classical music only and if u wanna listen to it. then type in ustad sultan khan .. one of the best players of sarangi in the world right now..:)

  • Amazing talent. Just amazing. Keep it up.

  • Do to Karma... You were a indian musician in your past like as one already mentioned. i am buddhist, and do to your interest and attraction to such in no form discovered by your family and only you... you have carried karma in a good way to be reincarnated in america and stil have the desire for the sitar. :]

  • @BuddhaAdministrator bullshit. He is a white boy from new england who has no recollection of any past life. Past lives are only a falsely perceived reality based in no empirical measurement what so ever. So take your bs somewhere else.

  • the song at 39 is actually a raga; bhimpalasi by Nikhil Banerjee; not this guys music!

  • yeah he doesn't take credit for it, lots of people play classic songs

  • mate, seriously u were an indian musician in ur past life and u have done good karmas.

  • what is the song that gets loud around :38 seconds?

  • Very interesting. I want to see this!

  • nice...

  • I love the music.

  • i thought this was awesome, but i havent yet seen the movie, and i cant find anything that says how well he actually did in the competition?

  • very intersting,i like it

  • Looks like a very interesting story. Looking forward to see this in its entirety.

  • brothers good..got some real talent thats for sure

  • When is this to be released?! This looks great! i really want to see this film. I would buy it.

  • pretty good tho

  • Does anyone know a good website for quality Sitars? Or if there are any on Ebay that are good?

  • lol like you wouldn't turn up your nose to oh i don't know.. an indian pop artist?

    or indian band?

better yet what about an governor that has indian heritage

they have prejeuice for one on the most simple reasons

it's so rare that their not used to it

  • this is trailer, where is the full match?

  • Yep the Sarangi is nice- Raag Bihag

  • What is the song that the preview ends with and where can I find it

  • That is a performance on sarangi by a young master, Alla Rakha (not Alla Rakha the tabla player) that we recorded at my Guru Ji's house. He is an incredible musician. His is one of many masterpieces that are heard in the film. Its not available for public release yet, but if you like the sound of sarangi you should check out Ustad Sultan Khan or Abdul Latif Khan. Who can name the raga he's playing?

  • The Raga at 0:37 is Dhun Kafi, from the Album, In Celebration:Highlights, by Ravi Shankar, full length is 12:32. I dunno who played the Tabla (Maybe Bikram Gosh) or what the ending song is.

Hope this helps, I'm not Indian though, but I do have a reasonable collection of Ravi shankar's music, as well as Ashwin Batish, and Rais Khan. But mostly Ravi Shankar. ありがとう !!

  • nope, not even close

    it's bhimpalasi by nikhil banerjee

  • @ragamalaproductions Raag Behag

  • @ragamalaproductions Lat oolajain soolajain more baalam. You play very tantricly... have you tried the gayaki way

  • so it is better than your stale food

  • are you retarded?

  • My whole family's vegetarian.

  • you re hot!

  • piquense el ano eso no es happy tree friends

  • soon i will play the turkish baglama

it's no sitar, but it will still be challenge

  • it will be harder, very harder

i doubt if he will win, but i praise him anyway

  • How can I see the movie?

  • Oh my gosh! Love this! Arigatou! I love Indian music! Ravi shankar's 'Mishra Piloo', Sitar Jam, and that 'friar park' is sooo awesome, Oh! And that super awesome Mr. Zakir Hussein, plus! One of my Indian friend (K.D.), electrical engineering student, really handsome (^__^) The culture of India is fascinating to learn! Not to mention the language, the cool curry, and the hot sitar. :D

  • Japanese culture is fascinating, too...Kabuki and Kathakali seems to have some affinity.

  • damn it... it's not a trap

  • hey y dont u post the movie on youtube

  • What is the song that the preview ends with and where can I find it

  • lol?

  • nice shredding

  • lol this is just payback for sending all those H1-B visa engineers from Bangalore to steal our jobs! ;D

  • For the Indians that criticized, "How is this different than the stolen dance moves I see in Bollywood movies? Isn't that Amitabh Bachan break dancing which is of the African American culture?" Hmmm funny how when someone that is not Indian picks up a sitar it so so very different. Huh yaar?

  • holy fucking...you dont be so mean to a very kind white guy trying to admire the sitar....what do u mean..he is trying to admire n people in the video put him so down...

    good luck

    peace

  • rudebega, you are rude and begging for attention with your sarcasm. In Indian culture, it is nothing special to be reborn. I am sure many thought of him as having been an Indain in his last life and still retaining memories of it. The same happened to me, my friends always put me into a saree insisting that I had been Indian in my last life. How is that "pushing" your way into a culture ? It means being accepted for being sensitive enough not to offend and to respect.

  • give me a break.

  • oh - Random. Get off it. Indians are far more prejudiced. The lighter, the better. Much more than here.

  • I remember reading that many Indians were angry at ?Ravi Shankar for taking his sitar to the West because they considered it a sacred instrument, which should not be used commercially. May be that was part of their feelings, too.

  • O_O Taj . . . Mahal . . . *drool*

  • I am very proud of you! It's very inspiring to see your devotion to something you enjoy soooo much has paid off. I hope you find some of the comments and topics of discussion on your page as amusing as I do. Your documentary is going to be a success and help education a vast number of people on Indian culture. xoxo

Peace and cheers to all u Rockers

  • WOW MOM

  • this is really cool.

  • I LOVE Indian music,,, its the most mystic and special in the planet, so spiritual

  • its funny because so much of indian culture is not indian (ie: taj mahal, sitar...).

  • salarsvids, it is now and has been for over 400 years. Indian culture was so attractive that even the Moguls wanted it.

  • what "is now and has been for over 400 years?"

    and what are moguls?

  • Mongols?

  • No, it isn't Mongols, they are from the East. Moghuls were what Timorese named themselves who came from the Northwest. Emporor Akbar was a Moghul. It is complicated but please look it up. They invaded India 400 years ago and left with a lot of her treasures, the Peacock throne in Tehran being on of them. To this day, they are called "Barbarians from the North."

  • yea, i thought it was mongols too..

so thats what you thought of persia? barbarians from the north who stole your gold? please, just because you didnt have any army, never had a government for yourselves until the english freed you.. but anyway, nationalism is blinding and all this is behind us

  • salarsvids, no, no... I am just relating it. I am not Indian nor am I Persian. I mean, that's history. And yes, nationalism can be blinding.

  • You bring up an interesting point...the sitar has a persian name, has persian names for its parts, and was played in north india during persian rule...however, nothing in Persia's musical tradition sounds remotely like it, whereas the native indian Veena is similar to the sitar in many respects. Personally, I think the sitar is more Indian than anything else.

  • That was my younger brother^^

  • great stuff!

  • Dude -- Lighten up! In the last two wars, an Islamic country (Iraq) lost, and a third loss will occur again in war with Iran. If there is a conflict between an Islamic country and the non-Islamic nation, the Islamists lose no matter the non-Islamic country is Hindu, Jewish or Christian. On another note; India is a surging economy directly competing with Western Europe and United States. By the way how are your folks performing in the neighboring Islamic country?

  • Go INDIA!!! YAY!!! I wanna see India kickin' some serious muslim ( | ).........They got nukes, they got some pretty kewl planes......they got the brains and firepower......now, throw in the will to not fall victim to Jihad.....we may have a winner!!

  • u Faggot India's president is a muslim.. And Muslims owned India! Look at the Mughal Empire! U stupid faggot! India Sucks!

  • At least India is not running around the world blowing up planes, school children, market squares. Killing people by the millions worldwide just for not being muslim. All muslims are faggots. Turbans are like a big tampon on their heads. They're always on the rag!

  • Yes, but the Moguls don't won India anymore. IT has been 400 years, man. That is not relevant today. On February 13, 1948 India rose once again to outshine Pakistan by many moons.

  • this isn't the place for this kind of a debate.

  • check out keith rivers in his song many faces, type it in the search...

  • i like indian msuic, it effects me somehow

  • luv the sound of the sitar. all the best to Andrew :)

  • This is awesome, good to see Indian culture spreading

  • metaphysical,... far greater than entertainment. Wow, you must be a "specialist" mister. All due respect. The musician guy is cool tho. But damn, cheesy documentary style. So 2003.

  • Amazing perspective beautiful music

  • fuck off asshole, like the music howeva

  • Wow - 9 of the 10 visible comments right now are spam. I followed the link in the description - they have a place where you can request the film for your area, so if you want to see it you should do that! Also, guys, mention that in your description, you'll probably get a lot more requests :)

  • Hooah.

  • aaaah! that's amazing! I'm jealous lol. If you decide to release a cd of your music, i'll be one of the first to buy it ^_^ (tell me if you do!!)

  • Good luck - I hope to hear you play the sitar soon

  • awesome! good luck :)

  • Good stuff. He does stand a chance I guess. Mostly depends upon his ability to customize the raaga/song into something unique.

  • hahaha this music is sucks

  • So is your speaking

  • very inspirational

  • I love Indian accents so much. I personally didn't have an iota of trouble understanding the people in the trailer. Seems a bit like subtitling an Irish or Australian film. You can find Americans who have trouble with those accents too (my parents, for instance). But the issue is absolutely not a big deal.

  • I too have no problem understanding people from other parts of the world speaking English. Most people spoke beautiful English in India everywhere we went. Unfortunately I did need to use subtitles because there are a lot of people in America who are not accustomed to hearing different dialects. It was no reflection on the quality of the English spoken by the people in the film.

  • hah agreed

  • When is the film coming out? I want to watch it. I studied Indian Classical singing and I love it.

  • looks pretty cool

  • Pretty awesome stuff, if it weren't for the American-style reality show format, I'da given it 5/5 ;)

  • Looks interesting

I will have to buy the DVD, or see it, if ever a DVD is released or it is shown in my area.

  • That's pretty cool.

  • Absolutely brilliant! Bravo & Good Luck!

  • haha

"are you really asking me this?"

    that was funny.

    sitars own ^_^

  • listening my song! Se you friends

  • YES 800th rating and where can i get this movie

  • Thanks! You can request our film at the link in the blurb above. That way when its ready we can screen it to your area! Otherwise I'll keep you posted.

  • Wow thats pretty sweet

  • definitly want to watch this, the sitar is my favorite instrument and i didn't even know what it was called, he's pretty sick at it too

  • I don't really think it strange for an American to play the sitar. Jimmy Page or John Paul Jones (one of the two) played the sitar in Ten Years Gone.

  • This is a rather inspiring video, why do you have to pollute it with your chain mail and other shit !!???

  • well thats pretty racist

  • how the fuck is this racist ?????

  • Lame.

    L

    A

    M

    E.

  • Pretty much like your life.

  • happy for ya buddy!

sa re ga pa ni sa!

make the swans descend with this `hansdwani' raaga

  • Is this being shown on TV or is this a documentary of sorts?

  • Indian Music is Cool.

( I made no money with YouTube )

    v

  • Remarkably he believes he is the lone "American" to compete in an Indian sitar competition. He is undoubtedly not and from an Indian point of view he is not even close to being ready. He is just the only one who is self-promoting enough to let us know how "talented" he is. It's all about mass media access and who does and does not have it. Unfortunately for us, Andrew Mendelson does have access, however a normal boy in India who has twice the talent does not. Very sad but not all surprising.

  • It is amazing to see a foreigner learn and play sitar so beautifully. It is one of the toughestIIndian musical instrument to play. Good luck to him. I wish he would excell in this feild more and more and become a master and spread this in the west.

  • i'm british & i really really love eastern / indian music...plus the women are really beautiful also.....

  • I want to know how he did in the competition!

  • Good luck and have fun while you're there! :)

  • Maybe he shouldnt whine so much about having only 5 days to make 3 songs, if he can sit around doing a montage of the sun setting and him chilling on a hill.

  • hehehe that's hilarious!

  • That's wonderful. You got it goin' on.

  • aqd

  • Lol... what the heck you guys. Holy over-reactions xD

  • this looks fantastic!

  • Nice video. Beaautifully put together

  • "Instruments similar to the guitar have been popular for at least 5,000 years. The guitar appears to be derived from earlier instruments known in ancient central Asia as the Sitara."-wikipedia as I said use your brain and read some book and use internet for some reading not just porn like average american.

  • lolz at quoting wikipedia and lecturing people about not reading enough, you fool.

  • You just proved that even reading is not enough for, they people need to evolve to humen since some of them all are still monkeys in white suite.

1.Quoting is done that my point is not arbitary.

  • 2.someone asked that why india is inventor of mathematics, its because we invented calculus in 5 B.C i.e before christianity came to existance. However I am not saying that europe copied anything, they were not advanced enough to travel across continent at that time and what europe have developed is its own exept ofcoarse with few exceptions.

  • 3.Thing to be noted is that Indian music is simple opposed to be complex it just need practise, just like chess in nature of learning curve.

My point is that its pointless to find who did things first but rather who is doing best at present.

Hope I offended people not having interest in studies while those who study may agree with me.

  • You quoted from wikipedia, which is most infamous for allowing any idiots to post any misbelieve - second only to it being renowned for the idiots that quote from it as if it's fact.

But I'm not getting dragged into a bickering bout which hemisphere better, as the answer is unreachable, irrelevant and subject to opinion.

(And I'm trying my hardest not to make a monkey joke back, seriously it's glaringly obvious)

  • "Most of the music exponents attribute the guitar as a western instrument but quite a few know that guitar was played in the ancient days in India during the Vedic period; the form of music was Samgan. This instrument later on is believed to have migrated to different parts of the world and acquired different names while it vanished from India. The birth of the guitar can be linked to kachhapi veena which was used for Samgan (Geet) thus got its name as guitar."-world music central

  • " The name guitarra was introduced into Spanish when such instruments were brought into Iberia by the Moors after the 10th century. (See related article). According to merriam-webster, the English word derives from French guitare, which in turn comes from Spanish guitarra. The Spanish word was borrowed directly from Arabic qitar which was in turn adapted from Greek kithara. The Greek word may have, according to etymonline, its roots in the Persian word sitar."-amazins

  • I appologise for monkey joke its not good and also for offending anyone not interested in studies because in life studies are not everything, I should make out that I wrote those things in intention to provoke you to write a reply I don't mean them.^^, Hope you understand and I like every kind of people irrespective of races and hope in future everybody does that.^.^

  • "Instruments similar to the guitar have been popular for at least 5,000 years. The guitar appears to be derived from earlier instruments known in ancient central Asia as the Sitara"-wikipedia, as I said please use your brain and use those internet bandwidth for some good use,not just porn like ALL americans.

  • -.- please read some book and have some knowledge, our culture started long before dark ages in europe at that time america was not even touched by europe and was inhabited by red Indians. Many music and traditions were borrowed by europe in late 16th century by europian voyges sent by europe when they came to buy our goods.

  • terrorsit music...

  • Obviously the stereotypical stereotyping American... I hate saying I live in the country because of people like you...

  • you know that guy is just tryign to start some drama

  • Dude, go suck an egg. You're so retarded.

  • in 1:43 that girl is cute btw im from nepal highest place on earth!!!

  • LOL that means alot coming from a slipknot fan you deaf fuckin cunt.

  • I absolutely believe that the crazy Indians will save the world one day with their intelligent insanity!

  • and I think you gonna ruin the world with your stupidness..^^

  • sir, if you believe that, then you are trully retarded....Indian people are very different, but very intelligent...if you don't believe that, then you are the typical american....

  • of course they are, but your statement is more than racists!and of course i'm american as much as you are an iraki ^^

  • Idiot....

  • DUDE U SHOULD TRY INDIA RAP. LMFAO!

  • DERKA DERKA LAUGH MY ASS OFF.

  • and u are the most stupid and reply to these non sences

  • good luck to him. it's a beautiful instrument and he plays it well.

  • Indeed. Ghengis Blues is one of my favorite films. However, the late Paul Pena was a phenominal musician, and I would certainly not compare myself to him. Though there are some parrallels between the two films.

  • Polyrhytms RULE!!!!!!!!!

  • poignant words :-)

  • I don't have anything funny or insulting to say except "so what?" Someone from wherever plays an instrument from wherever else and that's worth over 800 comments? Anybody who wants to play sitar knows where it's from, anyone who wants to learn kung fu knows where it's from, anyone who wants to play slide guitar knows where it's from. And some of the world's leading authorities on India are German and American.

Cricket should learn to bowl off spin though...

  • I want to hear about the guy who learns kung fu. Its a true artform and I'd love to learn more about it. I bet it'd make a great film.
