Those Hurricanes would be something i bet everyone there monitors very closely hey, you guys have copped heaps there. It's amazing hey how many small tornados a hurricane can spawn...not many people realise it! In Australia here we get lots of hurricane's up to the north of my State of Queensland (their known as Cyclones here). We get one that comes down as far as Brisbane once every 50 years or so, so were over due for another here too :P. Cyclone season is just kicking off now up north!
@tonzislandsandman Just saw Cairns got hit by a minor cyclone. They are going to get a lot of rain and flooding. Hell of a Christmas present. We have a nasty squall line approaching my area (Houston). It's gonna be an interesting Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas to ya!!
@elekktrode It just missed it! Hit about 20mins south of it, as TC Tasha. Some locals didn't even realise it was a cyclone as the winds were really localised and minimum.. although it did manage to rip one roof on someones house. The rain it brought was phenomenal and is now drifting south, which looks like where I live (Brisbane) will end up with the fall out from this... our dams are all at absolute capacity, and all the grounds are saturated from recent rains.. i
@tonzislandsandman I hope you guys don't flood. Our most severe flood event was TS Allison in 2001 (711.2mm in 24hrs), most of Houston was flooded. On 13 Sep. 2008 we got smashed by Hurricane Ike. Check out this video on you tube (Horrifying Sounds of Hurricane Ike) This what it sounded like at my house for about 9 hrs. Stay dry and happy holidays
@elekktrode if we get a further 250mm+ rainfall event, we could cop a monster 1 in 50/100 year flood event! Offical wet season isn't even at it's peak yet.. its a scary thought. You have a good christmas too! Enjoy it :). Merry Christmas! Hope no more squall lines develop today to dampen your xmas!
@elekktrode Thats it! We also get Tornado's in Australia, but obviously not as common as the US/Texas. This thunderstorm was a Supercell, the same type of thunderstorms that spawn Tornado's on the American continent. We get many Supercell storms per year here in Brisbane Australia, and one here and there does spawn a twister. Brisbane is over due for another damaging Tornado. Our last big one was in the 1973, but the surrounding areas have had many many since!
@tonzislandsandman A lot of people do not realize that Australia gets quite a few tornado's. I live on the Gulf coast of Texas and we get the green sky's but very rarely large hail. I have seen a number of waterspouts and only one funnel cloud. We get a few supercells with the occasional f1 tornado but they are mainly in the early spring. We worry about tornado's on the outer bands of strong hurricanes. Do a search on youtube on the Jarrell Texas tornado, very scary.
@elekktrode that Jarrell Texas tornado was nuts! Far out! Sounds pretty similar to us here, the Tornado's mainy around brisbane are F1's, but occassionaly we get a bigger one, once every 50 years or so. The strongest tornado ever recorded in Australia was in 1992, a few hours north of Brisbane at a town called Bucca. It was an F4 with another F3 tornado spawned only 20km's from it at other small towns. It's a matter of time till theres another big one.
@elekktrode Amazingly another Storm the day before this one hit, which dumped Baseball size hail through some of the suburbs to the South of Brisbane. Huge damage to homes and cars as a result. Some parts of Brisbane copped golf ball size hail on both days during these storms - hence the nice green colour :).
@tonzislandsandman Baseball size??!!!! Holy hell there will be a crapload of destroyed cars and roofs. Was there any damage to your home and vehicles?? You guys are lucky to live in such a beautiful country, I hope to retire there someday. Great video by the way!!
@elekktrode Sure were lots of cars and roofs destroyed! Was chaos! Lucky I missed that as it was to the south of brisbane and i live right near the centre. You must come over one day, theres soo many amazing things to see, the severe weather is only restricted to few days every year so it's pretty good over all :P.
@elekktrode I can't believe the Gap storm in 2008 made international news! I actually live in the same city as that storm, and we copped it good here. We live about a 20 minute drive east of the Suburb 'The Gap'. That storm was one hell of a supercell, the microburst winds topped 185km/hr. Gosh it did some damage, it flattened the Gap bigtime!!! Was the worst supercell storm to hit Brisbane in 25 years. The Gap is still trying to get back to normal after that storm.
like the video more of nice footage
