Kaufman has a fantastic voice. Certainly with more color than certain American baritone. And a sound that is different from what we are used to hear from tenors. It lacks brightness.
They said, "aperto, ma coperto", not only "coperto".
But, it works for him and nobody can say he is bad. However, the best of all times...and compare him with Kraus, is just unrealistic.
all you stupid people you dont now nothing about opera he is a tenor for sure he had sang at la sacala covent garden metropolitan opera is he was a baritone they wouldnt let him sing as a tenor you folks the managers of the opera house and the reigeirs the orchestal director the big tenors domingo the sopranos he is a tenor with a dark voice what does it matters but he is a tenor not a baritone his voice in head not in his chest listen to coren grato by jonas kauffman serch it and you will see
Why on earth would you say he's a baritone? Because he's got a lot of resonance and darkness? He sings only the big tenor roles, has a great top, and his voice has changed during his career due to a new technique. It's absurd to say he's a baritone.
@calafsdream was in the choir last year in Bayreuth...standing next to him...and have to say i like him MUCH MORE live. Also because he has very natural presence on the stage..
Again Kaufmann lavishes his profound artistry on what was a "warhorse" and found muances that seem to escape most tenors. This married to his supeerb Frrench make him a treasure that we are very lucky to have singing currently..

To evangelo13: Jonas is NOT a baritone, he is a tenor; a dramatic tenor if you will, but a tenor non the less. He is actually one of the best tenors I have ever litened to.
I saw the whole thing and I was very moved. His singing and acting made Faust a much more sympathetic, suffering, and guilty man than some others portrayals. Pape and Poplavskaya were also marvelous - altogether wonderful production despite the cold and dark stageset.
@evangelo13 He's a tenor and a great one, using prety much the same technique as Corelli- depressing his larinx which gives him dark and monochromatic tone with great top notes.Just watch his Tosca from ROH and observe motion of his larynx.
I heard it said that his is a voice of "a rare mixture of intelligence, vocal power and refinement". and I could"nt agree more with it. I heard him in Tosca and Carmen at the Met and his performances were electrifying!!
@voce29 I couldn't agree more. He embodies each rôle to perfection and endows his delivery with a passion I have never encountered from any other tenor . . . I would almost say 'any other singer'. He moves me to tears like no other. I am currently looking forward to seeing him live in Don Carlos in Munich - can't wait.
@Metrope Jocelyn Yes and His English in conversation is flawless, sounds like a native from the midwest with virtually no accent. His Italian and French also excellent. Thanks for the post!
Long may he remain in such (a) glorious voice! As a native French speaker, I can also vouch for his utterly flawless pronunciation. Cheers Opera Lover! Ta-ra, J
Amazing high C and sung easily, even with his dark dramatic sounding voice! He will be on the met. brdcst. next Sat. afternoon singing Faust again. As of now he is the #1 Tenor in the world.
Thanks--Was going to listen on Sirius but was not able too. He sings again on the Met. Brdcst next Sat. Perhaps someday we will hear Otello from him. He has the voice for it surely.
Merci à mon amie Françoise pour le partage et à operlover9001 pour le poste--certainly a distinctive Faust with a more heroic voice than the usual but still with considerable refinement.
His middle register is definitely baritone but his high notes are just absolutely remarkable....noone like him in all of opera......

Whatever anyone may have told you, classification is by tessitura. Some people just don't fit any of the stereotypes.

the question is whether the darkness compromises the resonance. Does it? I've never heard him live...

@calafsdream No it doesn't compromise. I've heard him and several other first class tenors live and jonas is unreal. defies physics.

I have heard Baritones with a lighter sound than him. Though he is FREAKIN' AMAZING, his tone is just waaaaay too dark.

Definitely a lyric baritone with tenor range . Compare his delvery with that of the Valentin. Faust sounds darker than Valentin

After listening to him at the live HD broadcast I am captivated. He has youth, virility, and a touch of the excitement of the great Corelli.
