I remember seeing this live on HBO back in '88. I was 16 years old and just got heavy into Led Zeppelin the year before. I was so psyched about this concert and watched it again and again. After seeing this 23 years later, aye carumba, I can't sit through this, Plant is pitchy, Page's guitar is out of tune. I still love these guys.
@toffee20 The keyboard sound never made it to tape. All you're hearing is Page's guitar, not any keyboards. I don't know if it wasn't mic'd properly or what the deal was. I remember Page calling it unforgivable.
I love this song but the quality i bad and the video is a little fuzzy but other than that this is a great video. led zep kicks ass and this is a great song
Yeah, hence the "again right aat the end of the line... and the verse before that he went into the
'wa-oh" and then corrected himself in the middle of the line... It was the "My Shangri-la" line... and he gets hit with a football a little before that... This version is well-known for just those things alone and the sparse drum and guitar sound
fuck that drum sound, each drum should sound like it has a warehouse strapped to it
not this gay metal sound ... i dont know whose to blame but it cant be jason bonham, he's an excellent player surely he'd know better than this set up .
Everybody rips on the '85 and the '88 performances, and I never knew why until now. Jimmy's guitar sounds too thin and twangy, his tone on Kashmir should be way heavier, Jason's snare has a St. Anger feel to it, Plant seems kinda bored, and definately not Jones' best keyboard playing. Better than Live Aid though.

Jason makes his father very proud. For sure. He hits the drums like an animal. Like a man. Like John Bonham!

I was there and except for Bonham and Jones, they sucked. They really did.

I reckon Plant's voice is in great form (compared to Live Aid that is).
But the drum sound and Page's sound/playing are just abysmal. I would love to know what happened there...
