This movie idea was stolen from de Sica's Sunflowers made in 1970 with Sofia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. I cannot believe the gaul, how outrageous this theft is.
Indeed, yes, the movie is based on a book. A memoir. An account of a person's activities. The filmaker decided to lift some things from de Sica's "Sunflowers" 1970 to make THE FILM more interesting. If you liked Everything Is Illuminated, you'll really like Sunflowers. Take a look. Buy a copy. Rent it from Netflix or your local library. Cheers.
Personally, I love lifted imagery. Almost all films these day have imagery very blatantly inspired by other films. It's the same with all art forms. It's really not that outrageous. But I agree, Sunflowers is a fantastic film.
The whole movie stolen? Do you realize how ridiculous that is? One scene was inspired by that? The movie is based on a book which is based on a real trip that the author had along with old stories and fables.
The movie idea. The way the movie looked. The design. The posters. There is a quest, yes, that could be anywhere, like ancient Greece or Ireland or the trip to Saturn, but the IDEA for the look of the film was lifted from deSica. What is it about you kids that drives with such blinders on? Indeed, this actor that created this film was influenced by a book of memoirs, but children, he was also influenced by another film and directly directed it's look to be like de Sica's Sunflowers. FACT.
There is nothing wrong with being influenced by things. It's done all the time. And it couldn't have been to anywhere because that's where the author of the book traveled. It also isn't INFLUENCED by a book it was based on a book. Have you either read the book or seen the movie? If you haven't I think you should before making such accusations.
Why so threatened? All I am saying is de Sica made a movie in 1968 with the same exact imagery as this Illuminated movie. I am not accusing anyone of anything except you kids who know nothing and refuse to open your eyes wide enough to rent or buy the de Sica film because I sincerely doubt you live in any place where some grown ups might broaden your horizons by employing a film house and present some history to your poor neglected brains, that's all. Watch the de Sica movie SUNFLOWERS.

he killed himself because he finally came back where he belongs and he made his peace with it and his life...
thats why he looks so relaxed in opposite to the beginning of the film...
