  • 650 horsepower and a top speed of +200 mph is nice and all, but the hp was never the problem. why didnt ford fix its handling and unbalanced weight instead? you cant just cover up the bad with and an extra 100 horsepower

  • @AdverbAdjective-In latest MotorTrend, ZL1 beat Boss 302 LS by 2.45 secs around a track. Driver couldn't cut curbs w/ Boss because live-axle kept skipping/sliding out! Also, ZL1 posted 7.41 at Nurburgring. Ford tested '13 GT500 at "ring" but never released a time. If GT500 surpassed ZL1, I think Ford would've released time by now. If read between the lines, ZL1 likely quicker around a track than GT500. That said, Mustang will have bragging rights at the strip. At least, for coming model year.

  • The gtr has aerodynamics. That gt500 facia is like trying to run holding a piece of plywood. Id still take the gt500 though.

  • This things looks heavier than any older models Mustang and it barely touches 200 but the ZR1 does 205 or more without the limiter and 200 mph on a car that 650hp is quite embarrassing the new 530 GTRhp does more than 200 as well without the limiter.

    It is actually only slightly heavier than previous models despite a larger engine, blower, and intercooler due to a carbon fiber drive shaft. The ZR1 has similar horsepower but weighs 500 pounds less, costs $40,000 more and only has a top speed 3 MPH higher. No Stock GTR has broken 200 MPH, the fastest recorded was 198MPH and that hasn't changed with the 2013...and it is $40,000 more as well.

    Yes I was talking about the ZR1 as in Corvette not the ZL1 Camaro since it was in reply to boredom killer mentioning it as car that could do over 200MPH. The ZL1 can't do 200MPH because it is running a 3.73 rear end and weighs almost 400 pounds more than the 2013 GT500 with a similar drag coefficient. The main reason the GT500 can go faster than 200 MPH this year other than some minor aerodynamic modifications is Ford dropped the gearing from 3.73 to 3.31 while adding 100HP.

    I have a 2011 GT500 and I've hit 150 MPH with 3.73 gears with plenty of room to spare. I don't have the governor removed but I know some one who has and hit 180. Add 100 HP and lower gearing (which increases the top speed but slows acceleration) and with the aerodynamic modifications 200 MPH is easy in this car and no the engine isn't going to blow. The GT500 is using pretty much the same engine found in the Ford GT (with a dry sump) which has no problem doing 200MPH +.

    Every car accelerates slower the closer you get to their top speed. Even the Veyron takes 43 seconds to hit 250. I'm only saying that old video of the guy blowing his engine was in a '99 Cobra that comes stock with 320 horsepower and he was supposedly boosted to 600HP and was likely running way too much compression and redlining, one detonation at that RPM and your motor is gone.The GT500 isn't running nearly as much boost and has a far better engine than that old iron 32v 4.6.

  • Honestly, ever since Nissan came out with that new GTR, the power of these pony cars just isn't impressive anymore. The ugly GTR will blow the Mustang and the Corvette away, whether it's a 1/4 mile or a track. Actually, you need a supercar to outrun the Nissan. So if your sitting at the lights in your Stang or Z06 or whatever and some punk pulls up beside you in a V6 GTR, your toast before the race has even began. Ford and Chev need to make a car that can compete with the GTR, imo!

The GTR is a strong runner but how many people can drop 98k on a car most people dont have enough for the Zl1 or gt500!!! I'll take a SS or 5.0 and bolt parts on when I get some extra cash!!

  • The engine inside this GT500 is enormous. According to Mustang 5.0 magazine, the 5.8 has a 623 lb shipping weight. The 7.0 from the Corvette Z06 weighs just 440 lbs. Big-ass engine but it's worth it.

  • Zl1 fabois keep telling themselves that the magnetic shit in the zl1 is enough to bend the laws of physics. no gm nutswiggers it's really not, look at the V.I.R track times and you'll see that the 2011 gt500 is wayyy faster than the cts-v without the new handling improvements the 2013 will have. Not to mention the extra 100 hp. It beat the audi R8 v10 for gods sake.

  • The Boss will outhandle this car easily. The ZL1 laid waste to the Boss in the latest Motor Trend magazine. I would give the advantage to the GT500 straight line performance over the ZL1 and certainly give the ZL1 the edge at everything else. Too much nose weight and skinny little tires will be the GT500s downfall just like always.

  • @mpfsupra: Are you serious? The Mustang GT 5.0 is quicker than a Camaro SS in a straight line and around a track, even though the GT 5.0 has slightly less HP than the SS. IRS is giving no performance advantage over the mustangs.

  • @hugosuave1 Ford Racing offers a Pulley & Tune for the Ford GT that adds a hundred horsepower and is available for purchase at your local Ford dealer, and you're right it'll walk a ZO6 like it's down 2 cylinders.

  • @1vdn992 Last I checked the ZR1 is cheaper than a GTs price tag of 6 years ago. Pay more money for a GT and still lose or pay 50k for a GT500 and get killed in every segment weather it be at the hand of a base C6 or a ZR1. I hope Motor Trend does another test like they did when the ZO6 and GT500KR came out. Please try not to avoid the question like you always do and tell me a single aspect the mustang won.

  • @OgleTorp The only thing the Vette kills is your bank account because of the poor resale value they bring, same can't be said for the FGT. There's a reason market value is much greater for the GT Ford, i feel sorry for you if you can't figure that out. The Ford GT, as well as being more colletible, is the ultimate tuner car, OEM is for people with no mechanical ability to brag about a little extra performance. New ZR1/ZO6s haven't devalued the GT at all, smart guys prefer exotics.

They are far more available and 500+ cubic inch engines make more hp without having power adders than a stock GT with a compressor. Plenty of videos of twin turbo vipers running 7 or 8 second quarters on here. GT isnt even close to that.

There are also way more mods out there for a viper plus there is much more potential out of a v10 viper engine than the GTs small v8. 500-550hp with a supercharger is nothing special stock. ZO6 has over 500hp N.A and the viper has over 600. Both are cheaper and more available too.

  • Solid axles handle power better than irs u fools.. irs will break if they didn't have torque management in first, and second gear. Drag cars have solid axles with well over 1000 hp

  • For all of you idiots out there, soild axle's are better for putting down power. The fastest IRS car in the world runs in the 7's. The fastest drag cars are all solid axle. The s197 chassis gas been as fast as high six second quarters and the 5th gen camaro just ran its first 8 sec quarter not too long ago.

  • @morg405 Dude the '13 GT500 offers an engine oil cooler, tranny cooler and rear diff cooler, not to mention torsen rear diff, fully adjustable suspension, launch control that can be tuned to your liking, Recaro racing seats. Ford has had test mules of this car on the Nurburgring for quite some time. Do more research please.

  • @morg405 i never seem a camaro be cheaper than a mustang most of the time even now a mustang gt is fastest & cheaper than the camaro SS a boss mustang is about the seem price of a full loaded camaro and the shelby goes about the seem of the boss laguna seca so i think the ZL-1 will be more priced than shelbys & i hope it does as good as the boss laguna seca at the track, or will looks very bad!

  • I would like to see a lateral g comparison of the shelby gt 500, boss, camaro zl1, corvette zr1 because if these muscle cars are able to corner with more lateral g then the zr1 then the slight straight line speed advantage the vette has wont matter because they will able to get higher cornering speeds to carry on the straights... on the street straight line speed wont matter either because theres nowhere to go for it to matter so id take a more practical muscle car :P.. new mustangs look good :)

  • I'm a little skeptical. Hennessey supercharged a Boss 302 and got 650 HP. The Boss is lighter than the GT500 btw. The blown 302 got an 11.9 quarter mile. If this heavier GT500 also has 650 HP then I think it will be slower. According to GM, the ZL1 runs 12 flat. Not saying this car sucks but unless the 2013 GT500 is underrated then the ZL1 is not even close to losing. And that's if it really includes the LSA when it's released. If Chevy answers back with the LS9 then it's over.
