  • Thanks for these videos...very helpful stuff. And also...bravo on having background music in your videos that doesn't make it hard to hear what you are saying...such a skill makes you better than 99 percent of those who post on youtube. =)

  • Can dis be done on win. 7???

  • WINDOWS XP! Man, its been a long time

  • @thisweekinlinux I want to install this on a windows xp but can it corrupt my windows files? Because my parents would be mad. Nice videos, m8!

  • gets so boring watching it install

  • I see you you did 10gb, can you add more later? Or are you stuck with just 10?

  • How do I get rid of this ugly windows 98 theme in ubuntu? When I try to browse my folders or go on firefox or anything, it just has this old, blocky, windows 98-type theme. I've tried going to the appearance application, but I can't find anything that will change it.

  • @asportkingSoF

You have to go to the software center in ubuntu and go to the themes and tweaks menu. You then download the themes and put them in your themes folder. Which is in computer>then file system>usr>themes.

After that, you should be able to go to system>preferences>appearance and tweek it from there.

  • LONG LIVE UBUNTU 9.10!!!

  • Really nice videos!!! But weird song...

  • @DylansTVChannel agreed. I stopped using that song after this video series. :P

  • When you make it 10GB, is that how much it can store? Is it possible to expand the amount?

  • @theif519 yeah, when you select the 10Gb option, I believe you can make it as big as 30gb there. Keep in mind, Wubi isn't really intended to be a long-term option for installing Linux, more of a "try it before you buy it" option, because you're putting yourself at the mercy of the Windows filesystem doing it this way, and the file could corrupt.

  • @thisweekinlinux i have found wubi to be a good option i use it as a main way to switch from windows and ubuntu but i hardly use windows. but if you go to your "host" folder under local disk you can browse your files on the windows side so if you get full you can move the files to the windows side or vise-versa hope that helps.

  • Hey I cant get sound out of my ubuntu Im running it on a VM on a mac. I installed updates and flash player but still no sound. Please help.

  • WHAT IS THAT MUSIC ITS DRIVING ME NUTAS

  • @willlisawsom it's called "Netherworld Shanty" by Kevin MacLeod. I like it, but it doesn't really fit well with what I do here, so I stopped using it.

  • Really good demonstration! Cheers mate! Loved it.

  • I got a copy of Kubuntu 10.10 and tried it on my desktop... It was ok, but it crashed 2 times (going into blackscreen, then to log in) so I just restarted and went back to XP. I installed it as you did but when loading, it crashed again! and it didn't even got to the desktop! It just loads and loads and loads... but doesn't do anything.

  • @pooch18 it could be an issue with your graphics card. Are you running Nvidia or ATI?

Have you tried using the Ubuntu 10.10 disc instead? It shouldn't make a difference, but it could.

  • I haven't had any luck with wubi under Vista or Windows 7

  • @Nekryu Sorry to hear that. What went wrong? I don't run either of those at home, so I'm not terribly familiar with them, but I do have a copy of Windows 7 that I could test with.

  • @thisweekinlinux I am a first timer to ubuntu going from win 7 ultimate, everything goes fine like you show in your video, except when I get to point where I do second boot into ubuntu, I am at a command prompt type screen, I do not know what to type in to continue. I typed help and received a bunch of commands, but still am lost. Any suggestions?

  • @MIDGACOMPUTERGUY so you did the Wubi installation and rebooted, right? Did Ubuntu ever start up?

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes Ubuntu started up, and went through installation. but after reboot is where I ran into problems. I did the same thing to a laptop I built with win 7 home premium and everything is working fine so far. I plan to try again on this computer once I move some more files, since it is my main terminal. I will post back with results.

  • @MIDGACOMPUTERGUY in all honesty, if you think you're going to be using Ubuntu regularly, it might be worth looking into dual booting instead of using Wubi. Installing using Wubi is very easy, but there's a good chance it can backfire in the long run.

  • @thisweekinlinux I did and after the reboot into window and back out into Ubuntu is where I had the problems. I tried it out on a laptop I built with win 7 home premium and everything worked great. I will try again later on this system after I move some more files since this is my main terminal.

  • @MIDGACOMPUTERGUY Same exact thing here.

  • @tinzovideo ,@thisweekinlinux, I have since installed super OS via linux live onto a separate HDD in the same workstation and not had any troubles yet, still setting it up so far, only 2 of my 4 monitors are displaying. But I'm confident that I will get it. I have just haven't had much time to research the drivers. Will post back more when I complete.

  • @MIDGACOMPUTERGUY Cool, thanks. :)

  • cool background music :)

  • @akaHermanSnerd Thanks! I'm a big fan of Kevin MacLeod's music.

  • I like how you installed Ubuntu inside Windows inside Ubuntu.

  • Tnx allot, this boot.ini really saved me, ubuntu broke my grub after the last update, and i couldn't make system recovery, but now everything is fine again and i can reinstall wubi :)

  • I like how wubi does that, it's allllmost like dual booting but without partitioning and etc. Sounds like a good idea for using Ubuntu on a computer you don't own that way you can use Linux and when done remove it without harming the windows installation and machine. I should know, I'm on a 'loaned' computer so i can't use linux unless it's in a virtualbox or wubi. though now I'm tempted to try wubi to see if mint or ubuntu will perform differently on the native hardware vs the limited VB setup

  • @experimental0000 it's probably worth a shot.

  • I tried using a USB boot and a Wubi install, and I can't get it to work. Ultimately, it comes down to this: I start in Ubuntu, and I can't see anything. Its just some colors (I've even heard the Ubuntu startup sound with the USB boot) and some vertical white stripes. Its some sort of display problem. I use a dell inspiron 1520 and a nvidia geforce 8600m gt graphics card btw. Any idea of how I can try Ubuntu out?

  • @redsaint182 you might try adding "nomodeset" to your boot line (ubuntugeek. com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup.html) then try installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers, then activate the "recommended" one)

  • @thisweekinlinux I got an error 404 when trying to go to that site.

  • @redsaint182 weird. when I copy/pasted the link from my post there, it put extra stuff into it. If you just go to google and type in "ubuntu 10.04 nvidia blank screen" it should be the first link.

  • @thisweekinlinux alright thanks, I'll look over the link. (I'm also on the ubuntu forums right now, and someone suggested the same thing, with the nomodeset idea, but it didn't work. But that may be because I didn't do it right. Anyways, I'll keep trying.) Thanks again for the link. (I'm about sick of windows, and I don't game much anymore, so I really want to get Ubuntu working haha.)

  • @thisweekinlinux Yeah, I think the menu I have is different than others', because I don't have the option to press f6 and do that stuff. A screenshot of the menu I'm getting is here: ubuntuforums. org/attachment.php?attachmentid=171401&d=1286330865

  • @redsaint182 Ah, that looks different. Select the first option and hit tab on it, then you can make the changes, I believe.

  • @thisweekinlinux So, I tried doing that, and I typed "nomodeset" there, and pressed enter, but still no dice. What happens is this screen ( ubuntuforums. org/attachment.php?attachmentid=171404&d=1286330865 ) eventually comes up, after some scrolling text, and I hear the Ubuntu starting sound (the African sounding music), and it just stays at that screen.

  • @redsaint182 another site I found specifically for your laptop suggested instead of using "nomodeset" to put "nouveau.modset=0" in that boot line (it should end with something like "quiet splash" by default, you'd just add that afterward, with a space before it)

And it's no problem about the responses. I'm sitting here working on a new video. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux Alright, thanks. I'll give that a try.

  • @thisweekinlinux oh, and, did you mean "nouveau.modeset=0" or is it modset?

  • @redsaint182 the page I saw said modset twice, but if it doesn't work with modset, give it a go with modeset. it's a 1-time change, so it shouldn't hurt anything.

  • @thisweekinlinux Thanks man, that was *really really* helpful. Issue solved! It was mod (no e), and the first time I did it I forgot the space (which turned out to be vital.) You mentioned a website specifically for this laptop? What was that site? It may answer some more questions I have. Thanks again.

  • @redsaint182 This was the site: blog.burningice.pl/2010/05/02/ubuntu-10-04-on-dell-inspiron-1520-how-to but it didn't really have anything else to it. :/

  • @thisweekinlinux alright, well thanks again man. This issue was kicking my ass for a few hours haha. Good luck with your new vid (I'm subscribed now, so I guess I'll see it :P)

    Take care.

  • @thisweekinlinux and thanks for the quick responses btw :)

  • Someone needs to activate his Windows XP installation! =D

  • @mtoy1337 hehe. it was deleted immediately after this. :P

  • @thisweekinlinux new to ubuntu. Thanks for your videos. Tons of information here!

  • @mtoy1337 thanks very much! :)

  • this was a great help! thanks! please make more! perhaps some concerned with basic use of terminal and tar etc. I haven't checked though, you might have already done this ^^

  • @chrisplus23 I've been meaning to do some "Intro to the Terminal" videos. just haven't gotten around to it yet. :) Thanks!

  • hey..i used to have ubuntu installed on my laptop but it became kind of pointless cuz i had no drivers for anythings. i couldnt use my wifi, soundcard, videocard, or any inputs...do you know where i could maybe get a driver package or anything?..then i'd reconsider putting it back on my laptop. Thanks

  • @getstoked101 the best place to find drivers in the newer versions is to go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. ATI/Nvidia drivers should be available there, as well as Broadcom drivers at the very least.

  • Great background music !

  • @davidsfc9 Thanks! I <3 incompetech

  • I have a question idk why but i installed ubuntu on my system with vista it worked good for the first couple of boots. then all of a sudden i got an error message and the boot loader screen did not come up anymore

  • @IceSedale You installed with Wubi? I'm not really familiar with Wubi inside of Vista, but I would suggest checking your C:\boot.ini file to make sure it still has two entries (one for Windows, one for Ubuntu).

If you can see a specific error message we can check the Ubuntu forums and see what's going on.

  • now this may sound like a super n00by question and may be inappropriate but was you emulating windows in linux, not just that, but emulating windows better than windows runs it'sself?

what are the specs of your machine may i also ask ?:)

  • @spriteman105 Nah, not a noobish question at all. I was running Windows inside of a Virtualbox installation on my Ubuntu 10.04 Beta machine. And yes, I've found that in a lot of cases it runs better inside of Virtualbox than it does natively. Not sure why exactly.

However, in this case I was running on my quad core, 8gb of ram machine, so it doesn't matter, it's going to run well no matter what. :P

  • i like that background song

  • @sosroli I'm conflicted about it. I like it, but there are definitely some parts that I could do without.

  • Great video...can't wait to get home and watch more of them!

  • @LadyElynn Thanks! it really makes it worthwhile to get great comments like this.

  • Very nicely done. I'm sure a lot of Windows users could take advantage of this material. But I have to say, the background music in the video is a bit hypnotic. lol

  • @dark28m wonderful, then it's working.... :)

  • great video! really helpful for people converting to linux from windows.

however i think the user also needs to know that since wubi installs ubuntu within windows like a software which can be removed from add/remove programs, removal of windows will also cause removal of ubuntu as well.

  • @TheArnabDas That's a very good point. Of course if they can figure out a way to actually remove windows, they're either running a liveCD or using a Windows reinstall CD, so I'd assume they should know how to proceed from there. If not, the next video in this series is going to be about dual booting. I'll add something in there about removing Windows entirely at that step. Thanks!

  • Now that is a great point, because when I first started with Ubuntu and my Windows crashed on me I just assumed my Ubuntu would still be there. In the end it wasn't a huge problem because I just went 100% Linux and all was fine again. But it is really nice to have that little bit of information just in case.

  • I'm not a big fan of the background music throughout the video :(

    Other than that, awesome vid!

  • @crunchy3neo Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely find something better for the next one.

  • Very nice! Although, I definitely don't recommend using Wubi, since it still has some problems with Grub. This will help out lots of new users deciding whether to stay with it or not.

  • @H4x0r18 Thanks! I just figured Wubi was the next logical step because it's easy to setup, requires no partitioning knowledge, and it's easy to remove. The next video is where things get interesting. Dual boot. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux I couldn't agree more. We tried jaunty (9.04) with wubi and it was a disaster on both the vista and xp. One suggestion for people using the wubi route would be to not treat it as a long term thing and rather a try out, just to see how you like it. Avoid updating the grub, the kernels or, from what I understand, "mesa" packages.

  • @stpfreak13 I've always viewed Wubi as a temporary solution, but I know there are people who try to use it long-term, and inevitably they end up with problems.

  • BTW, I mean no disrespect by saying peace bitches, it's just a saying that I like.

  • @mrmagoo662 Nah, I got that. no problem.

  • I used to dual boot windows 7 with wubi then I dual booted along side windows and now I've totally ditched the windows due to it kept asking me to activate after having activated 3times. So stupid with that product key crap. I cant believe I paid for that crap. Ubuntu all the way now.

    Peace Bitches!!!

  • @mrmagoo662 Awesome, congrats on making the transition! I dual booted for a while, but kept going back to Windows for gaming, and finally, back in February 2007 I made the switch 100% one day.

  • Hi again, I tried as you said and when I try to boot Ubuntu, it asks for a command line. I tried boot but it said something like ''No kernel loaded''. Any tips?

  • @juppukun Were you using the 9.10 CD or the 10.04 one? I tried the 10.04 one first, and it did that. If that did happen, just go back into windows and uninstall Ubuntu from the add/remove programs, then try it with the Wubi installer from wubi-installer. org

  • Classic...FTW

  • I love the tags.

  • @attackofthepoprocks :) thanks. just wanting to make sure if someone types in "linux newb" or "ubuntu n00b" or something that they'll find me.

  • Got to love virtual machines :O)

  • @ThingsontheWeb Definitely makes screencasting easier

  • @thisweekinlinux and fast

  • Your website is down.

  • @TheSushiDude Yeah, it just came back up. I'm talking to my hosting provider.

  • @TheLinuxWizKid Thanks!

  • Awesome Video

    5 stars :)

  • Awesome video! This is the one I have been waiting for! Looks like I'll reinstall Ubuntu sometime soon. I only keep windows, nowadays, fpr gaming purposes. Now I can safely install the best of both worlds! Keep up the good work.

  • @juppukun Awesome, thanks! I've used Wubi briefly before, and it's definitely a nice compromise if you want to keep XP as your default.

  • lol right around 2:05 this one progress bar shows 128%

  • @xqyzii I noticed at one point it actually said something like 447%. :)

  • The standalone Wubi installer is great. It's simple and easy to install. I suggest it to linux noobs who liked the Live CD but are still ignorant of the file system structure and installing apps from the command line, etc.

  • @CHVNX Awesome, thanks for the comment!

  • great vid ;) horrible background music though

  • @MrBlorenge Thanks for the comment. I used it on the first two in this series, so I thought it would be appropriate to stick with it. I'll see if I can come up with something for the next one that's a bit better.

  • yea don't get me wrong i love your vids keep it going!

  • @MrBlorenge I definitely didn't take it the wrong way. I was just experimenting

  • thanks, well done. Except you might want to cover the downloadable wubi install which I've found to be easy to explain to newbies, and the not-so computer literate. Mainly because it takes care of the ISO for you, because using ISO files seems to be difficult for some people. I'm going to spread these intro videos to people!

  • @SubaruSumeragiX1999 That's an excellent point. I actually haven't tried using the standalone wubi installer, but I know that's where it all started. Thanks!

  • @thisweekinlinux yeah, that's how I got my Parents to try it. My Mom is slowly switching over all her computers to Ubuntu now because she kept on messing up her system on accident through various means (including viruses). Wubi was the only thing lefts standing, and now she just does 100% clean installs.
