  • RIP BK

  • god doesnt love you. neil young does.

  • The first time I heard Neil play this live was at the 1993 Bridge School Benefit.

  • Neil Rocks... a true innovator

  • Omg I like the sing but not his voice it's a little to high but still awesome song!

  • who the fuck are the 8 haters?

  • Saw him open with this during the Rust Never Sleeps tour. They pulled some covers off the speaker's Neil got up off as though he'd been asleep under there all along and started playing this song. Mesmerizing as anything I've seen before or since. Then out came Crazy Horse and all hell broke loose. If musical Genius is a real thing this guy ( as the kids say) B1.

  • I remember the first time I heard this song, I was fucked up on the ground.

  • Best young song it's like the definition of life

  • 7 months </3 I miss you Uncle Jake. I know you're with God having the time of your life<3 I always listen to this song.. it's one of my favorites now. I will see you again soon. I miss seeing you during the holidays and hearing your stories. You always told the best ones. I love you Uncle Jake<3

  • this song reminds me of my dads cousin Dave he died of cancer about 3 years ago and he had a version of this song he played guitar and sang to and every time i would come out there i would have him sing this to me i love this song.

  • Not sure I want to grow up..

  • I turned twenty today...

  • this is the message for those who are passing on to the next generation...too old to rock and roll, but too young to die!!

  • "Now you're underneath the stairs, and you're giving back some glares, to the people who you met, and it's your first cigarette." Do you remember that feeling? I do.

  • This song reminds me of Port Vue P.A.

  • This is beautiful... I'm 18 and still stuck in the same rut. Can't wait to get out, maybe I'll take my boyfriend to the sweet South for a bit when summer rolls around

  • His songs are melancholy beautiful and true.

  • @nicodagger just like you

  • Oh to live on sugar moutain..

  • great recording

  • Nice, simple song. No shredding guitar solos, no evil bass guitar solos, not that their bad things.

  • really makes me miss being a kid, never had better times

  • I remember the first time I heard this song. It was last summer, and my friends and I were hanging out under a bridge, where we had ourselves a little camp of our own (though kind of illegal). It was cloudy, and I remember it was maybe the 3rd week in June. We had a battery-powered radio set up on a cable spool, and this song came on. I remember everyone was quiet. That summer was a fantasy to me, but that was last year, time to grow up, but maybe next summer will be too.

  • GarPeteY Son you get it dont you, hold on to it ,sanity is belief of reality ,this phony world has no gifts to give ,believe in youre heart, love is a realty no BS nothing can ever change THAT reality, revel in lifes lessons keep a open heart .Art is the flame to keep us all going THANK YOU!

  • @GarPeteY I thought Art was the flame that we heated our hotdogs with? I'm confused.

  • A great great song. Just perfect in every way. The shots and film do fit the theme of the music. It's more subtle but do you want to see a carnival barker and all? A home town that is every man's and then dream clouds of time move back and forth covering distance to indicate you can go back in mind time but not body and telephone lines that represent long distance, alienation and time that never stops for anyone.

  • those are nice shots of your neighborhood. doesnt really fit the theme of the song though.

  • LAME

  • i feel like everyone is on their sugar mountain the first time they hear this song...

  • I remember the first time I heard this song. I was 15 and at a summer fair in Flint Hill, Virginia, sometime around '74 or '75. I stood stock still as I listened to the lyrics which imported to me the brevity of life. I listend and looked around and realized that before long, all the people I was there with would, like life's diaspora, be heading out to lead their own lives. What I wouldn't give to see Mom and Dad once again, or Steve and Bucky and Mikey....what a wonderful time of life.

  • This is a great song from a really good singer/songwriter/musician! I think most people that really enjoy good music have a favorite Neil Young song! Sincerely, BobbyK

  • The thumbnail for this video reminds me of TWDP ZOMBIE EP cover.

  • natural Golden choice for everyday use" Sugar Mountain"

  • you've got some excellent footage here..... i prefer when the camera is moving though...like at the very start....the static shots are all gorgeous, and the tones are exquisite, but i would love to see a video by you where it's all motion. :o)

  • This song would've been amazing to have for fallout: new vegas.

  • Neil Young was originally from Omemee Ontario. I live just outside omemee and sugar mountain is actually a real place. If you are just leaving the main part of Omemee you pass a hill covered in forest. At the top of the hill is an empty field. This is where Neil as a teenager, with his friends the Barkers and the Collins boys would have field parties. The coloured balloons are a reference to heroin, and Neil left Omemee when he was twenty. This song is not a metaphor it is autobiographical.

  • "-though you're thinking that you're leaving there too soon. You're leaving there too soon."

  • Wish I had a girl to love and share this song with.

  • Beautiful stuff. Visual awesome.

  • love singin this tune, hits home...thanks for sharing it man!...:)

  • Left there to soon...

  • My Sugar Mountain was real, 17 acres in the Santa Cruz mountains with my dog Bo and the old bottle dump down by the creek where I dug up 5 boxes of turn of the century bottles, back in 1970.

The girl was only across the aisle of our classroom in the tiny 5-room school and she tossed her golden amber hair as she played flute in time with the beating of my heart.

I will never forget Jamie and my first kiss, there on Sugar Mou...

  • @Delivered0ne Hey that was me, You kiss really good!

  • There's just something about acoustic guitars and how much more raw emotion they bring to a performance like this. Of course no one can do it like Neil Young.

  • Over rated song? Yeah, you are right! Go enjoy your Bieber........goof.

  • dieser song ist wunderschön und

erinnert mich an sehr schöne tage mit

    meiner jugendliebe aus canada.

christine i miss you so !!!

  • Over rated song for sure...

  • @PhaQandyou Are you stupid?!?

  • @ThatGuy8145 What are you, fucking retarded?!

  • @PhaQandyou nope cuz i enjoy music and i could care less if everyone else likes the same song

  • @ThatGuy8145 If you could, "care less if everyone else likes the same song", then why did you call me stupid for expressing my opinion? Sounds like you're a hypocrite you little cretin.

  • @PhaQandyou and rape victims are just big old complainers! and don't get me started on civil rights! biggest joke of the century amiright!!! mmmmmm trolling tastes like cherry

  • @superepicfuntime What are you, fuckin' retarded?!

  • @PhaQandyou I'm the human embodiment of the look on your mom's face when she's getting involuntarily butt rammed by 12 inches of ex convict love

  • @superepicfuntime You're the human embodiment of what's wrong with America.

  • @PhaQandyou shut up

  • @JFguitar22 What are you, twelve? I'm afraid your arguments are too intellectually superior for me to even try and provide a valid retort worthy of countering you telling me to, "shut up". Please! Have mercy!

  • @PhaQandyou youre a fucking twat know your shit asshole....Neill Young is awesome and this song is awesome too im not 12 im 25 and i know what is good music and you dont so please go listen to your shitty Lil wayne or bieber and shut your immature mouth

  • @JFguitar22 You Fail.

  • @PhaQandyou YOU failed shit head you listen to poor shit music ass and you cant see that neil young kick asses shut up and go listen to you Lil wayne ass shit

  • @JFguitar22 Why does everyone always say I should listen to Lil Wayne?

  • @PhaQandyou because if you say this music is underated you must listen to Lil wayne asshole

  • @JFguitar22 Fuck these Neil whats-his-face fans are a touchy lot. Express any opinion they don't like and, BAM!, they're all over you pissing and moaning until you're so sure that they all must be a group of pissed off menstruating stooges on a rampage of hate based upon some unidentified mental disability that you throw your hands in the air and sighing ask, " God! Why me? Why me?".

  • @PhaQandyou LOLLL what the fuck youre talking about.... if you think this music is overated what is your taste seriously lol ??? it means that you suck in music...you can't say that is overated even if youre not a fan! lol what the fuck with people man shut up!

  • @JFguitar22 You mad bro

  • @JFguitar22 What are you, fuckin' retarded?!

  • @PhaQandyou give me one reason this song is over rated you little boy

  • @JFguitar22 I guess it boils down to Old Neil being overrated and therefore this song -which I was told was good- follows suit.

  • im so learnin this on gutair

  • This song makes me miss Canada

  • This is very beautiful and emotional Neil Young song.I may be only be 14 years of age but I understand he is talking about. My dad always tells me you can't live the world in fantasy you got see the real world. But I know I am not the only one who does'nt want to see the real world. But you can stay on Sugar Mountain even when are very old if you kep a young mind. You will never be off Sugar Mountain. You will always live on Sugar Mountain.

  • @Gamefreak2201 I'm 48, but hell, I remember being 15, it never leaves you - I remember how the future looked bleak and scary, and how small I felt. Just remember that your Dad put you on the mountaintop to let you grow straight and strong; but he knew that one day you'd be ready to embrace your freedom and conquer the world below.

  • @Gamefreak2201 you're pretty thoughtful for someone of 14! what you said is so true, I'm 53 and would really like to go back to my own Sugar Mountain!

  • @Gamefreak2201 When he says you can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain, he knows of where he speaks,

-- though you'll be thinking that you're leaving there too soon.

  • @pnwoods I left at 17, BOOOYAH!

  • @Gamefreak2201 Bud, that was beautiful, thank you..

  • @Gamefreak2201 You have more wisdom than most people twice your age, three times! I am very impressed!!

  • @nicodagger Let's make it FOUR!

  • Good song to discover at 18. Thank you for the video.

  • 3 people wanted to hear the last 58 seconds of the song you left out.

  • Such a beautiful song- says 1000 times what most songs say. Then again it's Neil Young, who channels these songs from the cosmos spanning the eons.

  • My favorite Neil song!

  • "Ohhh to live on....Sugar Mt......"

  • I remember my dad kinda singing/humming this while running with me, and I got addicted to this song :3

  • JimB667,

    So do you !

  • Class A video

  • This song makes me think of Mountain Park, the long-closed-down amusement park in Holyoke, MA. Going there as a kid, meeting my soon-to-be stepbrothers on the family-dates my stepdad took me and Mom to. The concert posters for Billy Joel, the dark mountain nights lit up by the famous carousel and food court string-lights, riding the ferris wheel with my stepbrother... what a time, and this song IS that time, for me. I may be older now, but I sneak to my 'Sugar Mountain' every now and again.

  • My uncle just passed away yesterday and I am going to play this song at his funeral. He was a great man who went away too soon. We'll miss you Uncle Jack.

  • @GHChewbacca I'm sorry. This'll make a great song for it, I hope you and your family will find some good times talking about him.

  • 3 people havent lived on sugar mountain

  • please tell me where you got this version of this song.... i can't find it anywhere

  • It turns out that I have bought the house where Neil young grew up with his family

It's on a small mountain near Peterborough Ontario

I'm writing this while sitting under the deck beside the stairs (in the song)

The people that live around here have told me a lot of stories of Neil and his father

And how they could hear him playing sugar mountain and other songs on the deck

You'll never guess the story behind the barkers and the colored balloons

  • @jabberwalkie2469

What's the address? We won't visit. Just want to see it on Google Maps.

He wrote this song while he still lived there?

You wouldn't be pulling our legs, I hope.

  • @jabberwalkie2469 What a great story my friend! Thank you for sharing that bit of info and hope that you had a great Saturday!

  • Studio magic, Live misery.

  • 1 idiot down in 'Vinegar Valley'.

  • The background hum in some of the video clips is annoying. Either have it in all of the video or none of it. Be consistent.

  • 4:38-4:40 sounds scary!!!! omg! omg! that scared me haha ^.^ i love neil young though! Rust Never dies!

  • Beautiful song, great video!

  • The favorite song of a lot of not too big Neil fans. Not making a point, just something I discovered over the years.

  • Well, I've been hearing this song since I was very young because my dad is a big Neil Young fan. I'm just about sixteen now, and while I'm not extremely fond of Neil, this is one song I can say that I've never forgotten. "You can't be twenty on sugar mountain," is a line that I'll never forget. This song has changed the way I think about things in my life. After all, in only four short years, I'm going to be twenty myself.

  • I saw Neil Young at the San Diego Sports arena in1976... Cost of the ticket was $8.35...It was worth every penny..This Song is timeless and still moves the people of our 1960s generation....Peace

  • Steve: I'm a dudd at this share'ing thing. Ignore all the crap above. But, happy new year! Your brother, Jim.

  • Great shots and colors.

  • You're a very talented editor!!!

    I love all your videos

  • Great job on the video, really compliments the song nicely.

  • thanks for this

  • This is a nice video but frankly, I'm 57 now and nothing anyone puts to music has any "meaning" to me. I find "meaning" in very few idioms anymore. I used to find "meaning" and "signifigance" in the most trivial things when I was younger.........no longer. "Meaning" bores me now. This song is about age. Getting older. Again. No signifigance, just simply getting older. That's it. Alot of Neil's songs are about age and time. I knew Neil was great when I was 15 long before most others.

  • @kentucy9999 WOW ! how depressing... 57 is still young and you are still creating memories. Find meaning in your life look to do something new something you would never have thought of doing before.Hang out with your kids or nephews/nieces that alway's keeps you feeling young.Participate/volunteer at your church(if you don't go start..p.s.if you don't believe then ask that GOD would reveal himself to you.JESUS is real.) GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!

  • @kentucy9999 My Dad's 57 and he LOOOOVES this song! No one can bring us back to Sugar Mountain, but maybe there's more to life than that. I'm sure there's a lot more life left in you than you think.

But I'm probably wrong, I probably am naive and know absolutely nothing about life and ought not to have said anything. Sorry for the 99% chance of me ill advising you.

  • it cutoff at the end...shit!

  • ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!! at last, Sugar Mountain. good show. cheers!.

  • Classic Neil, one of my favs.

  • Thank you!

  • reminds me of brokeback mnt lol

  • this also makes me cry. damn it. steev is right, theres nothing i want more than to go back. i actually think that being grown up isnt all about responsibility and money and independence all the time. i think a huge part of being grown up mentally is when you look back for the first time and start realizing every small detail in your youth that you took for granted and wish you could reach out and take hold of it again. its when you realize being a kid wasnt so bad after all.

  • this is one of my favorite songs. it always breaks my heart in that kind of way that leaves you longing for the past so much that you cant stand it. i see myself going through the fits of wanting to be independent o my parents everyday but even so...At 20 i feel like ive lost so much if only just in time and youth and that innocence thay you can never get back. im nostalgic enough as it is. this song just amplifies the pain even more.

  • One of the most beautiful.

  • I do so love this song. This was my dad's favorite song from Neil. I remember him playing this loud on the backporch speakers on long summer nights and me listening to the lyrics and wishing I could be on Sugar Mountain. The best times of my life. Takes me back to much happier times of my life. Such a gorgeous song with so much emotion behind it. Missing those days and missing my dad. I hope he is on Sugar Mountain now. I will meet him there someday. Missing the best days of my life. RIP Pop <3

  • @twinklebear22 ..I pray that you meet your dad one day there also..You sound like you miss him and those great so.. be blessed. Always remember those good days, they will help you through the bad days in life.

  • @UmmAzizaJamila Thank you so much for your ever so kind words! I appreciate them so much. I do miss him very much but I know he is no longer in pain and I do hope he is there on Sugar Mtn. because he loved to dream of a place like that, you know? I always try to remember all the good times and they do seem to overrride the bad times. Thank you for your prayers. I am very grateful to you. Bless you and your kind soul. Thank you for your comment. It was very uplifting. :)

  • @twinklebear22 I am glad to add some love, light and laughter to your day. May you be blessed!

  • @twinklebear22 I love what you wrote. It reminds me of my Mum and makes me so happy yet so sad that she is gone.

  • @dustyyyy Thank you my friend. I am so sorry for the loss of your Mum. But always hold the memories you both shared together in your heart and she will never really be gone. I wish you all the best my friend. <3

  • @twinklebear22 God Bless Your Dad! :)

  • @ILoveGod22696 Thankyou so much friend!! :))

  • @twinklebear22 Brings me back to good times with my father as well, amazing song gives me chills and good memories every time i hear it.. Great vid btw

    RIP Dad 02' miss ya

  • @xcruelxwinnerx I know the feeling my friend!! This song always takes me back in time to special times shared with my dad. I miss those days as I can see so do you with your dad. I am sorry for your loss on your dad. May he rest in peace my friend!! ♥

  • @twinklebear22 your comment made me cry.. <3

  • @twinklebear22 That's a great story;YOU WILL SEE YOUR DAD AGAIN! Thanxs for sharing! :)

  • Did you ever post the full version?

  • shit man just turned 23, still on sugar mountain. dont wanna leave and accept that im getting old.

  • @ryanlfc87 You are NOT old! 23! you are still a kid! I'm 26! I am a really old woman lolol!

  • good eye for images!

  • also, i'm crying my eyes out right now... hardest choice back then was which crayon to use, as one of my friends said. but it's a good video.

  • you never realize just how good it is on Sugar Mountain until you're at the bottom. You fight so damn hard to get down, run away... and then one day you turn around and look up... and there's nothing you want more than to go back.

  • @Steev625 Great way to put it! i just left sugar mountain myself and its a major wake up call.. where did all those years go?

  • Funny, on the right are a bunch of videos including the most perfect follow-up song I could imagine hearing directly after this one... The Verve: Bittersweet Symphony of Life

Stop having fun, give up toys, become responsible, turn to alcohol to numb the pain and become a fat tax-paying worn out adult, dammit!

A copper-top peasant is more like it.

Oh, & don't dare use too many carbon credits or enjoy nature's 'green-peace' unless you pay your license, registration, permit and service fees.

  • I love the orange/yellow bloom effects you have when the frame changes, I see this alot in skate vids.

  • also, great video!

  • best version of tis song
