Furthermore, when a typical rear naked choke is applied preventing blood flow to the brain by closing the coratid arteries on each side of the neck, the brain IS deprived of the oxygen it gets from blood. However, being choked on the throat is a lot different than just holding your breath.

When someone chokes you, it's choking out a circulatory vessel. Not your actual breath. Even if you held your breath or not, it'd stop air/blood to the brain which knocks you out. It's not like putting water over your face to smother you.

Furthermore, when a typical rear naked choke is applied preventing blood flow to the brain by closing the coratid arteries on each side of the neck, the brain IS deprived of the oxygen it gets from blood. However, being choked on the throat is a lot different than just holding your breath.

alright you gotta give Roy some credit... hes a pretty good fighter for being a fatty : ) that being said... Anderson Silva would still have a chance against Roy. If silva were to gain weight and Roy drop weight and they both make it down to Lightheavyweight. Anderson wins, if he works on his takedown defense and technique on the ground (he barely won his last fight in the last round due to takedowns and groundgame but pulled it out with a knockout submission with 2 minutes or so.

True, but if you listen Bas and Roy are saying that Anderson was going for the rear naked choke but he didn't have the correct position so the choke was MOSTLY tracheal. Roy was saying he should have held his breath because he wasn't in any real danger of passing out from lack of BLOOD flow. And the fact that Dan's mouth is wide open speaks to this. He's trying to get air. With a blood choke it's not about air. Rewatch it. Silva's arms are WAY outta position for a rear naked.

@aca689 You don't include the fact that he could very well end up with a crushed windpipe. It would not be the first time in MMA and Anderson would sure be the right guy to make it happen. I don't know if you have been caught in a choke like that, but in my experience I tap out way way faster when it is in front of the neck and it is really painful unlike the normal rear-naked choke where you will just pass out peacefully due to the cut of blood supply to the brain.

They are the experts and they both say he should have held in there for another 12 seconds. For a true "windpipe crusher" you need the blade of your forearm near your wrist directly on the windpipe. This is NOT the case. Rewatch the tapout. I love Dan Henderson but I agree with ROY NELSON. He shoulda fought it to the bitter end and risked passing out if that's what it took.

And the point of Bas's story was not that he had that effect from unexpereience but because he was stubborn and did not know what effect it would have to try and hold it. And this was in sparring, imagine how hard Silva did it in a real fight. I hate when people quit but it is better to tap than snap(or crush your windpipe) so you live to fight another day.
