I miss all those great comedy shows like Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Rhoda, Bob Newhart, Good Times, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and the variety shows that some of the celebrities had like Dean Martin and others.

The TV shows today that are supposed to be comedies, I just can't get into. They don't make me laugh, they just seem silly and stupid.

And that was without having to depend on obscene language, or insulting the audience for laughs. I'm not a prude but it was just better.

Which would have been a mistake. Vicki Lawrence's personality and temperment is much better suited to Mama, and likewise, Carol Burnett much better suited to the character of Eunice.

Well I could see it happeing Carol played an old lady REALLY well. And Vickie was good at being loud and obnoxious. Vickie could have definatly played Eunice well. I wish they would have made ONE sketch with the roles reveresed.

Also if they roles had been reveresed, Eunice's character would have probably been altered a little to fit Vickie, and Mama's would have fit Carol's more.

Also originally they were NOT supposed to be Southern hicks, they were only supposed to be a feuding family, but not Southern.

Clearly she had come a long way from when she was originally hired to play Carol's younger sister in "Carol and Sis" sketches when the Burnett show first started in '67.

@poosaypirate - But it could be said that the biggest joke was behind-the-scenes, with the real life actors' ages in inverse proportion to the characters they were playing (i.e. Vicki Lawrence, the youngest cast member, playing the mother of the 16-years-older Burnett; plus Roddy McDowall using his own British accent when playing her younger brother while in fact he was 5 years older than Carol).

I'm inclined to agree with you on that. I know he ended up dumping her because of Eunice's constant prying, but it's a little fuzzy to me. I'll have to rewatch it. I did feel bad for Mama because she had this nice old beau (William Conrad of Cannon fame) who was buying her things and offered to take her on a trip and Eunice effed it up for her. Payback's a bitch!
