This scene really meant a lot for me when I seen it for the first time because Nathan showed by standing up that he was not going to give up on himself and disappoint and hurt his own because of it.
"Between" season 4 and 5 he fought with some guys on a pub that insulted Haley. One guy pushed him out of the window and he hit the ground very bad. He hurted his back, so he wouldn't be able to play basketball. The drinking is probabley because he's depressed about loosing the game. In the first episode season five he gets flashbacks so you can see what happened. :]
I agree, two main emotional stroy lines being nathan with basketball, and Luycas and Peyton, probably because we watched the characters grow and work for their dreams and then it returns in seoson 5 after they've been shattered, depressing becasue we've all grown to love these characters and want the best for them

All the scenes with Nathan made me tear up, I felt so bad for him but I also was kinda mad at him for how he was acting, but I mean he lost his dream it was so sad!
