Actually it's a mandolin, but the round body and round sound hole do make it look a little bit like a small lute. Definite cosmetic resemblance, but a different instrument.

This one is new to us, but it's a very popular Finnish folk song. Do yourself a favor and do a YouTube search for Loituma. They do an awesome version and there are links to all kinds of crazy renditions of it as well!
