It's like trying to decipher a poem or piece of literature, while you may be able to come up with some kind of meaning from the imagery and symbolism they are creating, you can never truly understand what is going on in the artist's head

Yeah, if you ask the people in the band they'll readily admit they don't have any conventional training. If you're looking for technical proficiency try Yngway Malmstein, Joe Satriani, and the lead guitar player for Nitro (Michael Anthony Batali? Or something like that.) They're all solid. Beethoven would also work.
