i bought one of these Epiphone's in Cherry just about a year ago and it fits all my needs, i play from Metal too oldies blues and the feedback is incredible, and yes i feel like fucking Dave Grohl when i play this bad bitch on stage! :D
The Gibson easily sounds better - richer tonality and better presence - but that's likely due to pick-up differences. So better quality pickups on the Epiphone would likely make it comparable the Gibson, although I have no idea what differences there are in the playability. from experience I'm not particularly impressed by Epiphone pick-ups anyway.
reading my comment below boath companies were making top of the line instruments but moving epiphone to japan and later moving to korea epiphone had cheaper labour costs making it a cheaper guitar. and the question is this is gibson guitars realy worth all that money or are we paying more for just a name?. my preferance give me a high quality epiphone then an over priced gibson.
epiphone started to make musical instruments in 1873. gibson started to make musical instruments in 1896. from the 1930s until the 1950s epiphone was gibsons biggest rival with more jazz players prefering epiphone guitars to gibson.but after epiphones forced relocation from new york to philadelphia gibson bought epiphone 1957. and in 1958 epiphone released its sheratone series later that same year gibson released its es335 series.it was not until the early 70s that epiphone was moved to japan.
Somehow I think the Epiphone sounds a little sweeter'..Good value for money eventhough a lot of people would go for the Gibson...I love my Epi Dot anyway..!!
True, true, the Epi is a good guitar for the price you pay. But that Gibson has a better sound for sure. If I had a spare $5K (New Zealand) I would difinitly buy the Gibson ES 335. But I don't, so I will probably end up getting the Epi instead. $1100 (New Zealand)
I detect a slightly creamier tone in the Gibson, however not $2200 worth! I would say the epiphone is fantastic value-for-money-if you are a good musician no-one could tell the difference.
@TheShagsJam Yes that would be annoying, however, it is often the case that the same model/brand guitar can vary in build quality-Peter Frampton was commenting on his ES335 as being one of 'those' guitars that stand out as being particularly well built-I think you would have to play a few of em to get a good one-go through the whole lot in the shop!
I just got my Cherry Epi Dot last week. The GC tech set mine up right. Sounds beautiful. I wouldn't trade it for a Gibi ES 335 any day. And the money savings is worth it. Get one and have it set up right and you're good to go.
@Philtration i used to think the same way, i just got a gibson es 335 the sound is truly AMAZING, i also think they're a bit pricey, but they're worth every penny
@rafaarias That's kind of the point, isn't it? The Gibson should be worth every penny. If it isn't, you've just spent a shed load of cash for no good reason. The real question is: is the Epiphone worth it? If it feels and sounds like shit, there's no excuse - you get what you pay for. However, I own both an Epiphone Les Paul and Epiphone Dot (total cost: less than EUR 800) and I couldn't happier.
The pick ups and sound is clearly better in the Gibson, which is what you'd expect for the price you pay. The Epi dot however is good if your a part time muso or if you don't have the money for the Gibson. Personly I'd love to own a Gibson 335, but the Epi Dot will have to do untill I win the Lottery!
Gibson hasnt made a better guitar on the most part than epiphone in four years. As far as the usa luthiers better than the chinese luthiers at epiphone wishful thinking folks. Maybe 10 years ago but no way in hell now or with in the past four years.
The Gibson nitrocellulose finish is a pain in the Ass I have two fender strats with the nitrocellulose finish and you have to be careful. With the poly finish that Epiphone applies is very lite and perfectly applied.
@EPI6fingers I don't think there's enough difference between Fender US and Mexican models for the difference in price and certainly the Japanese models are virtually as good as the US models. But, while some Epis are good guitars, the feel, hardware, and finish of Gibson USA guitars are massively better. If it's worth the extra is up to the buyer.

Basicly buying a different Headstock and resell value. I bought the Epi Dot and played a Gibson ES335 and I found the Epi version alot better. Got a nice Cherry one
Thanks for the comparison. Sounds like the Gibson has a slightly better top end - a bit crisper and more defined. Epiphone probably feels a little different to the hand - less buttery?
@satchtech - Not to knock your question but the sound he's getting is surely from his hands and excellent technique - the amp sounds like most every other amp will. He can probably get the sound that makes us ask that question within a range of settings on many different amps, and guitars for that matter. .
Hello, i played a Cube30 too and i have a 335 Copy. I mean, that the Gibson is much better than the Epiphone. More Sustain in the Body. Greatings from Germany!!!
Hi, I've got the cube 30 too but have never managed to get this sound out of it. Could you please give me a rough guideline of the settings in this video. Thanks, and great playing!
@satchtech Well..... the amp doesn't belong to me and I haven't played on it since I did this video.... but from what I remember, I think I had it on one of the tweed Fender type models and pushed the gain up just enough so it had a little bite to it. Then I added some reverb. But I can't remember what exact settings I had on it.
@esrdjan If I can offer a comment. I have had both and while they are equally dynamic and love the neck and tone that comes from both, I found the Dot was a bit brighter and for sure less in weight than the Sheraton. The latter has a much nicer headstock and appointments, better suited I would offer for Jazz work as well.
@ArtDonna84 Thank You for reply, few more questions for you then. I am more blues player, so I guess Dot would suite me more? Which one did you play more? Knowing all this, If you were buying it now which one would you buy? Here, price difference between two is about 180 eur. If it's generally about appearance, can you say that it's not worth more money? thanx
@esrdjan I sold the Sheraton II to buy another Dot as I liked the sound personally much better than the Sheraton for the blues, rock (60-70's). While John Lee Hooker's preferred the Sheraton II, it wasn't for me. As far as the price difference, I'd say not worth the extra, though the head stock is much nicer to look at, but that isn't why I would buy it. I would really encourage you to get to a GC or similar that has Epi's and make it a personal choice. I think you'll be happy you did.
They sound similar, but the question is... is the extra money worth how much longer the Gibson will last? The Gibson will probably need less work done on it over the years also. How long do you think the Gibson will last over the Epi?
They sound really close. however, the build quality of the epiphone is terrible. The nut was chipped and the bridge pickup went out both within in a year. and the frets had to be redone, because the factory ones were so short from the edges that if you bent either E string at all it would slip off the edge of the fret. however, that is why it costs 350 dollars instead of 2000.
The sound is more full on the Dot, but both have the same pickups nowadays...You can buy 8 Epiphones for the price of a Gibson, hands down... I beat the shit out of my Dot and she's still rolling strong :)
I have a 2009 Korean made gretsch and a les paul studio made in USA and I must say the Gretsch stays in tune much better sadly made in the USA doesn't mean what it used to mean.
And thank you for this video. I was looking for an alternative guitar that would give me that warm, thick tone of a ES 335. Time to save up for a Dot (though I prefer to buy a gibson... but I don't have the money xD)
The sounds are very similar, that's true but there is more to a guitar than tone and hum. Are the actions comparable? Is the 'feel' the same? Does the build quality and standard of finish seem the same? How smooth is the machine head operation and how much hysteresis? Are the materials of a similar quality - this will determine whether the tone improves with age. I have played a US Strat for years - I was put off semi accoustics by a bad Framus experience but will be buying Gibson 335 soon.
Stay away from the Epiphoneys!! First off they are made by slave children in China who are all malnurished and they get beated daily if they dont made their 1000 guitar quota, Second reason is that Epiphone as a company is based in Iran and use the money in sales to build bombs to be used against us here in the USA and Thirdly, the guitars are made from post recycled chex ceral boxes and their pickups are discarded Starkist tuna cans.No Im full of crap!! LOL these are nice instrments Thanks DC
@J4m3z1 Remember that any difference might be put down to the way the tone controls are set, even though the uploader has taken care to get them close. I personally liked the sound of the Dot as much as the Gibson. Rather than "muddy" I thought it "Full" and "warm". Anyway, these are individual's perceptions. At the end of the day, if you're dissatisfied with the Dot, purchasing a couple of humbuckers saves a lot of money compared to getting a Gibson.
@rhum66 From what I heard, the Dot is ever so slightly darker than the 335. Like, just slightly subdued. Nothing that would stop me from buying the Dot instead of the 335 though :D
the epi is mellower warmer and not as harsh, which i like, but it either needs a fret job(which is as simple as a set up) or the plyer needs to works the neck a little better b/c notes were continuosly fretting out. so all in all i like the epi more, just give a set up cause i have a feeling it needs TLC
alright, i'm gonna put it like this, if you don't take care of your guitars, they will all "fall apart" as you put it. i have had gibsons, i have had epiphones. if you tighten your nuts and keep your pots clean, you'll be fine. take care of your shit. the epiphone in comparison is amazing quality for the price.
I don't understand how epiphone can afford to make such good quality guitars at such low prices, I mean, the gibson is $3550 and the epiphone is $400. For a guitar as cheap (money wise) as that epiphone to be put into comparison with a $3550 guitar is something in it self. Lesson in life, prize does not equal quality.
I love the look of epiphones but the trebly sound of fenders and im not willing to spend more than 350€ on a new guitar, would this guitar work for this?
@rockgod1987 yeah they fall apart very easily... in fact, you can't really play them or they'll crumble right in your hands. If you go to a Guitar Center early in the morning you can see pieces of Epiphones lying all around before the staff has the chance to clean it all up before they open up.
@rockgod1987 dont listen to him ... epiphones have a few bad parts but if you get it setup right their just a good if not better than gibson in everyway except for the pickups and nut ... there is also a wire on the bridge used to help keep the saddles in place when restringing that buzzes a little but you can fix that with a little tape
can anyone please help me out...are these pretty much jazz/blues guitars? could they handle some of these bands songs: The beatles, The smiths, stone roses, oasis? im reading alot about them always it just mentions the jazz side not the rock. please reply to this if you know
@MattKendell@hiddeninromance thanks for clearing it up for me, I just get worried as its constantly reffered to as a jazz guitar. now to find a good deal on a dot. my local dealer is asking like £450/$700...way to much
@Anotherrnumber Listen to the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl (Their frontman) uses one of these (Trini Lopez signature model) 100% of the time live. Watch them play "White Limo" and it'll confirm it ain't just a jazz guitar! :D
All of the guitarists you mention from those bands have used these guitars or similar. The Beatles used epiphone Casinos for instance. Noel Gallagher used a Dot.
epiphone's stock pickups are generally muddy. But as soon as you swap those out for some burstbuckers or other well known gibson made pickup, it will sound like a gem.(it's already there for the most part)
the gibson has just a lil bit more, but i gotta tell ya I watched this vid, then I just listened and ddnt watch and i was surprised at without looking how close the epi sounds considering its street price is about $300 and the gibson is around $3k,and a vintage one around $30k that epi is pretty impressive, spend $300 on pickups and the epi might even sound better than the gibson
The Gibson does clearly sound better, but I like a vintage sound myself. I think the Epiphone produces the vintage sound more. The Gibson has a better sound, but is it THAT much better to justify the price difference? Maybe, maybe not.
The difference is the pickups ... do the same test with both guitars using the exact same pickups .... I bet it will be harder to tell the difference. Epi's are awesome.
the epiphon is complete shit ive only been 1 year with mine and already has the heastock broken off the jack has fallen off 2 times and i have a faulty pick up switch everybody just get the gibson
I made the mistake of buying an Epi Dot online. What I got via UPS was a piece of junk. Terrible set up job, imperfect finishing, loose knobs and a warped neck. Needless to say, it went back. I since bought an Epi LP. It's perfect. Love it. I recommend buying guitars in person whenever possible!
You obviously have never owned or played the Epiphone Dot and I am sure you have never (or will ever) played the Gibson 335. Unless you have a micrometer, you would not see, find, or realize any difference in the two guitars. Take your KMart special Harmony guitar and enjoy yourself. I hate to be harsh but I also hate pretenders posts on something they know nothing about!!!
@bamancs12 hi i have got a gibson 335 a Burny copy and a tokai copy
i looked at a dot put it side by side its not quite thier no dout great value for money
but the burny and the tokai look abit more like the gibson not taking anything away from this guitar i just prefure the others still a top guitar tho and i love harmonys rockets and great h75 a great guitar and stratatone cheers hope this helps
I kind of made best of both worlds. Bought an Epiphone DOT, put Gibson USA 57' Classic pickup in the neck, and a Gibson USA Burstbucker on the bridge. It may not say Gibson on the headstock, but still sounds awesome.
@sugizo88 I have a Gibson 335, trust me you won't want to play an Epiphone Dot after playing a Gibson 335. I'm not knocking Epiphone as I have a fantastic Epiphone Les Paul, but if you can afford it get a Gibson 335, you won't regret it. I sold some shares for £1500 to buy mine and it's one of the best decisions I ever made.

@sugizo88 if you look around, you'll see a lot of professionals using Epi Dots. As a matter of fact, I've even seen Swichfoot using them. I had the chance to talk to a touring pro who used an Epi Dot and he summed up like this: "The sound is pretty comparable. Except the Dot is 1/10 of the price, so when I take it on tour across the US, if something happens, it's only $400 to replace it and not $3000."
@jowattiegirl if you have the money, changing the pickups is definetely worth it. I put in a burstbucker pro and 57 classic and replaced the nut and the difference is huge. It sounds as good as a gibson and is customizable to the sound you want. I would also check the intonation though, as they dont set up the guitars very well straight out of the box.
I'm pleased I just watched this, I have the epiphone and was thinking of changing the pickups to make it sound authentic, but I reckon raising the pickups will do the job! I also had tuning problems but changing the nut solved this, cheers
thanks for the re-asurance man. i just bought a epiphone 335 and i love it and now that i watched ur vid, i am glad i didn't shell out another 2 grand! haha (not that i could have anyway) they sounded pretty much the same to me. no $2,000 difference in sound to me.
For those of you thinking about buying the Gibson, just remember that Oasis' Noel Gallagher used Epiphone's for a lot of the bands lifetime.
That is all.
Oh and one other thing.. if you have fuck loads of money, obviously get the Gibson. Another thing thing you could do is change the pick-ups of the Dot to the same ones as of the 335, that would make it even closer sounding :)
the epiphone sounds exactly the same as the gibbo. cant beat a classic side by side test. And how cheap is the epiphone?? I paid £1789 for a PRS but let's be fair - drunks in pubs don't know what the fuk your playing and old people just say "nice music, but could you just tone it down a bit please, we're trying to talk". When I think of the money i've spent on guitars, amps and general shit over the years... Exactly. Buy an epiphone, save money, buy drugs and booze instead!!! Shamrock n rol
i love reading the comments and how alot of people can agree that the epiphone has a bit of a muddier tone than the gibson...i find it slightly amusing because in my opinion, ive always preferred a slightly muddy tone, so i think the epiphone sounds amazing
Tell you the truth brother, I couldn't tell much if any difference. I minimized the vid and just listened. The only way i could tell you had switched them out was the jack noise. I'm usually pretty good at tone discrepancy or change but that had me fooled. You'd have to TRY to find something different in any substantial way. Now I REALLY want a Dot whereas before it was a mere obsession.
thanks for the effort but with that recording quality you will need to compare gibson vs fender tfor the viewers to notice any difference in the sound ;))
very good comparison and much thanks!!! gibson sounds substantially better, but man i dont know if its worth the $2000....not that this is going to keep me from getting a 335..............but really i like the 359 a lot more
hold on there, pardner. That gibson has a trapeze bridge which I don't believe would be stock with a 335.Normally the trapeze is used on a full hollow git.
335's with the switch on the lower horn are the worst examples that gibson ever built, but I'd still rather have one of those than the Epiphone Dot. The Epiphone is great for the money, but the Gibson is a much nicer guitar.
@breakingthe4thwall Thanks! I'm just running straight into the Cube with just a little reverb. I think I had the amp set on one of the Fender-ish models. Enjoy your new Dot! : )
i bought one of these Epiphone's in Cherry just about a year ago and it fits all my needs, i play from Metal too oldies blues and the feedback is incredible, and yes i feel like fucking Dave Grohl when i play this bad bitch on stage! :D

@FrenzyGuys Not anymore.
Now you pay for that Gibson logo on the headstock.
While Gibson's quality has gone down, Epiphone’s quality has gotten better and better.
The gap has disappeared while the price difference has not.
Like Cadillac, Gibson has become a status symbol and they are living off of their name while other makers have passed them by.
Go to Guitar Center and compare a $700 Schecter Solo-6 Custom with a $2,500 Gibson Les Paul and do it without the preconceived notions.

Hi, I've got the cube 30 too but have never managed to get this sound out of it. Could you please give me a rough guideline of the settings in this video. Thanks, and great playing!
satchtech 4 months ago
@satchtech Well..... the amp doesn't belong to me and I haven't played on it since I did this video.... but from what I remember, I think I had it on one of the tweed Fender type models and pushed the gain up just enough so it had a little bite to it. Then I added some reverb. But I can't remember what exact settings I had on it.

@dcooper830 the epiphone sounds like it has more mids

Hi, have you tried Epiphone Sheraton II, and can you compare it to Dot?
Is it worth adding extra money and buying Sheratone instead of Dot?
Anyone?
esrdjan 5 months ago
@esrdjan If I can offer a comment. I have had both and while they are equally dynamic and love the neck and tone that comes from both, I found the Dot was a bit brighter and for sure less in weight than the Sheraton. The latter has a much nicer headstock and appointments, better suited I would offer for Jazz work as well.
ArtDonna84 3 months ago
@ArtDonna84 Thank You for reply, few more questions for you then. I am more blues player, so I guess Dot would suite me more? Which one did you play more? Knowing all this, If you were buying it now which one would you buy? Here, price difference between two is about 180 eur. If it's generally about appearance, can you say that it's not worth more money? thanx
esrdjan 3 months ago
@esrdjan I sold the Sheraton II to buy another Dot as I liked the sound personally much better than the Sheraton for the blues, rock (60-70's). While John Lee Hooker's preferred the Sheraton II, it wasn't for me. As far as the price difference, I'd say not worth the extra, though the head stock is much nicer to look at, but that isn't why I would buy it. I would really encourage you to get to a GC or similar that has Epi's and make it a personal choice. I think you'll be happy you did.

@ArtDonna84 You are very kind to reply to my questions, and very helpful. Those were the answers I needed. thank you

the Gibson has more sustain to it - due to the higher quality wood
jimmythesnagglepuss 5 months ago
They sound similar, but the question is... is the extra money worth how much longer the Gibson will last? The Gibson will probably need less work done on it over the years also. How long do you think the Gibson will last over the Epi?

the new epiphones are made in china get one second hand one that was made before 99 then itl be a korean one there top quality.

mrcallese 5 months ago
They sound really close. however, the build quality of the epiphone is terrible. The nut was chipped and the bridge pickup went out both within in a year. and the frets had to be redone, because the factory ones were so short from the edges that if you bent either E string at all it would slip off the edge of the fret. however, that is why it costs 350 dollars instead of 2000.
that1stupidkid613 6 months ago
To me they sound the same, but you that have both, with your experience, can tell us, wich is the real diferrence?
will30x 6 months ago
The sound is more full on the Dot, but both have the same pickups nowadays...You can buy 8 Epiphones for the price of a Gibson, hands down... I beat the shit out of my Dot and she's still rolling strong :)

I have played a US Strat for years - I was put off semi accoustics by a bad Framus experience but will be buying Gibson 335 soon.
ormsray 7 months ago
Stay away from the Epiphoneys!! First off they are made by slave children in China who are all malnurished and they get beated daily if they dont made their 1000 guitar quota, Second reason is that Epiphone as a company is based in Iran and use the money in sales to build bombs to be used against us here in the USA and Thirdly, the guitars are made from post recycled chex ceral boxes and their pickups are discarded Starkist tuna cans.No Im full of crap!! LOL these are nice instrments Thanks DC

john84928 7 months ago
@john84928 The Dot is very well made and sounds as good as the Gibson in my opinion. You won't be sorry if you buy a Dot.

john84928 7 months ago
The Gibson sounds really crisp, the Epiphone a little muddy.
J4m3z1 7 months ago
@J4m3z1 Remember that any difference might be put down to the way the tone controls are set, even though the uploader has taken care to get them close. I personally liked the sound of the Dot as much as the Gibson. Rather than "muddy" I thought it "Full" and "warm". Anyway, these are individual's perceptions. At the end of the day, if you're dissatisfied with the Dot, purchasing a couple of humbuckers saves a lot of money compared to getting a Gibson.

the epi is mellower warmer and not as harsh, which i like, but it either needs a fret job(which is as simple as a set up) or the plyer needs to works the neck a little better b/c notes were continuosly fretting out. so all in all i like the epi more, just give a set up cause i have a feeling it needs TLC
gtnick314 8 months ago
alright, i'm gonna put it like this, if you don't take care of your guitars, they will all "fall apart" as you put it. i have had gibsons, i have had epiphones. if you tighten your nuts and keep your pots clean, you'll be fine. take care of your shit. the epiphone in comparison is amazing quality for the price.
JoeBent1 8 months ago
I don't understand how epiphone can afford to make such good quality guitars at such low prices, I mean, the gibson is $3550 and the epiphone is $400. For a guitar as cheap (money wise) as that epiphone to be put into comparison with a $3550 guitar is something in it self. Lesson in life, prize does not equal quality.
SrGreeneyed 8 months ago
The 335 has much sweeter sound than the Epiphone but is it really worthy £2000 extra ?...not sure...

ive heard that the epiphone falls apart pretty quickly
is this true?
rockgod1987 9 months ago 3

@MattKendell @hiddeninromance thanks for clearing it up for me, I just get worried as its constantly reffered to as a jazz guitar. now to find a good deal on a dot. my local dealer is asking like £450/$700...way to much
Anotherrnumber 9 months ago
@Anotherrnumber Listen to the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl (Their frontman) uses one of these (Trini Lopez signature model) 100% of the time live. Watch them play "White Limo" and it'll confirm it ain't just a jazz guitar! :D
Nickpatient 8 months ago
@Anotherrnumber
All of the guitarists you mention from those bands have used these guitars or similar. The Beatles used epiphone Casinos for instance. Noel Gallagher used a Dot.
hiddeninromance 9 months ago
@Anotherrnumber yes the Gibson is a very versatile guitar, better in jazz and blues but still it sounds great
7duckydo7 8 months ago
95% of the sound for 16% of the price. Sounds like a bit of a no-brainer, doesn't it?
Visionism 9 months ago
epiphone's stock pickups are generally muddy. But as soon as you swap those out for some burstbuckers or other well known gibson made pickup, it will sound like a gem.(it's already there for the most part)
hotgluefingerboard11 9 months ago
the gibson has just a lil bit more, but i gotta tell ya I watched this vid, then I just listened and ddnt watch and i was surprised at without looking how close the epi sounds considering its street price is about $300 and the gibson is around $3k,and a vintage one around $30k that epi is pretty impressive, spend $300 on pickups and the epi might even sound better than the gibson
fraterlucifer888 9 months ago
The Gibson does clearly sound better, but I like a vintage sound myself. I think the Epiphone produces the vintage sound more. The Gibson has a better sound, but is it THAT much better to justify the price difference? Maybe, maybe not.
marguitar1 9 months ago
The difference is the pickups ... do the same test with both guitars using the exact same pickups .... I bet it will be harder to tell the difference. Epi's are awesome.

I made the mistake of buying an Epi Dot online. What I got via UPS was a piece of junk. Terrible set up job, imperfect finishing, loose knobs and a warped neck. Needless to say, it went back. I since bought an Epi LP. It's perfect. Love it. I recommend buying guitars in person whenever possible!

epiphone dots look nothing like a 335 the pickgaurd is wrong and the shape is not quite their but still good value for money

I would also check the intonation though, as they dont set up the guitars very well straight out of the box.

thanks for the re-asurance man. i just bought a epiphone 335 and i love it and now that i watched ur vid, i am glad i didn't shell out another 2 grand! haha (not that i could have anyway) they sounded pretty much the same to me. no $2,000 difference in sound to me.
6stringzstrummin 11 months ago
For those of you thinking about buying the Gibson, just remember that Oasis' Noel Gallagher used Epiphone's for a lot of the bands lifetime.
That is all.
Oh and one other thing.. if you have fuck loads of money, obviously get the Gibson. Another thing thing you could do is change the pick-ups of the Dot to the same ones as of the 335, that would make it even closer sounding :)

the gibson just sounds much cleaner, i have the epiphone dot, and since the first time iv played it iv fell in love with it!! its an amazing guitar!
AlexSmyth0o 1 year ago
the epiphone sounds exactly the same as the gibbo. cant beat a classic side by side test.
