While this scene and one other are indeed overdone to the point of being ridiculous, this is an excellent movie of one of Shakespeare's most memorable plays.

The main reason that most versions of R&J suck **** is that they are too romanticized. The modern audience fails to grasp the horror that everyone in the town is playing with knives and swords. The point of this movie isn't to "modernize" R&J (duh!) but rather to help a modern audience grasp that the play with death is horror

The idea of having it all in Shakespeare's own words was to show how transferrable Shakespeare still is. The film still worked as a concept and pretty much nothing was changed. Its a clever idea, and i think they pull it off.
