The Ashokan Farewell sets the mood for four years of sadness in American history. Played as Sullivan Ballou's letter to his soon-to-be widow is read, the Ashokan Farewell creates tears. This is a melancholy Celtic melody, akin to Danny Boy, Kathleen Mavourneen, and Loch Lomond.

I was feeling a great sense of loss and longing for the music, the dancing and the community of people that had developed at Ashokan that summer.
