  • It makes perfect sence for Dell to recommend the use of Windows, the customer group Dell is targetting has little to no deeper knowledge about computers, most only knows how to use a computer from work. As most companies and the state uses Windows, go figure...

  • WTF FOR THOSE SHITTY WINDOWS PROGRAMS THERE IS A PROGRAM CALLED WINE

AND UBUNTU IS 500X MORE USER FRIENDLY THAN WINDOWS

  • @plutgamer except when you have to compile... scons, cmake, git, path to source, build folder??? come on, NOT that friendly. Why not make it as simple as Windows, I like double click on a file and let it autoexecute, What, is not geeky enough!? I use Ubuntu because I do not have money to buy a Mac.

  • @osmodivs okay windows is simpler but its just a piece of ****

  • adblock that doesn't block ads... good one!

  • I'm running Ubuntu on a Dell right now ;)

  • "Windows and Mac.... Don't care." Flawless delivery! Love the show!!!

  • "window's and mac... don't care." The delivery was flawless. Love the show!!!

  • Damn Vulnerable Linux? I've gotta try this.

  • What I've heard about Dell's Ubuntu based computers is that sadly Dell loads alot of their branded bloatware onto the system so while you do get Linux (woohoo) you'd almost be better off reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu or other distro just to clear out the bloat (aww man..)

  • @JohnWesleyMethodist Thanks a lot! :)

  • @taluzoid sorry, my time machine isn't working (Just started saying "source code" about 2 weeks ago). :P

  • What os do you use at work?

  • @moldjelly Sadly, I have to use Windows XP at work, but I've managed to set up a Linux Mint machine to do some video work on as well.

  • the first three seconds were amazing

  • @kyreks4 :) hehe

  • its really sad how at the actual dell website there is no mentioning of ubuntu linux or linux in general, and when you go to the "for home"> "desktops" (or "laptops") section you will notice that in the os choices there is no sign of any linux os at all

in short, you need to knowingly search for it to find it.

  • @heydude09876 sad indeed...

  • I think you should try being a little less serious, like Chris Pirillo :3

  • @AsTheSunBurnsOut I've been trying to be less serious in the last few episodes.

  • IMO ppl shouldn't be forced or tricked into using Linux. So, if you want to continue using Windows go ahead. If you want to try/use Linux, do that too. Doesn't mean we'll stop telling ppl about Linux.

Any hopes of trying the Mint Fluxbox release?

I thought the logic behind Chrome's AdBlock meant that to the Ad company it appears like the user sees the Ad... which means the website still gets whatever income they would normally get... which is a win-win situation.

  • @librano I hadn't been paying attention. Downloading the Mint Fluxbox RC now. :)

I don't think there was a logic behind Chrome's adblock not really blocking things. From what I read, the full ability just wasn't there before.

  • Good information ;)

  • @itsthemacaddict Thanks a lot. :)

  • hmmm droid 2? what carrier is going to have it?

  • @origionalwinja from what I've read, Verizon. I believe Verizon has exclusivity to all "Droid" phones (not Android, Droid specifically).

  • The most funny episode ever!

  • @HenrikTheJester thanks a lot. :)

  • @HenrikTheJester: I agree.

  • @thisweekinlinux

aww man, gnash isn't working for me :(

  • You blew by ears with "why does Dell hate Linux!!". :)

But a nice weekly news roundup. Keep up the good work.

  • @enedene1 oops, sorry about that. :P thanks!

  • I don't really want to download a new Chrome version every few weeks.

  • @IckleBanana You don't have to

  • @renkinjutsu01 I would to be up to date with the latest version.

  • @IckleBanana hmm? but it sounded to me like you didn't want to be up to date. I personally don't care what they do or not do with the stable version, because i'm on the dev channel.

  • @renkinjutsu01 I want to keep up to date so I can use the latest feature, I just don't want the annoyancde of updating. If it was automatic I wouldn't mind. I may not have to as I am currently using a different browser called Pale Moon which is a stripped down version of Firefox. It runs like Firefox did back in the day. :-)

  • Good Video as Always Jordan

  • @Linux4UnMe thanks a lot!

  • Dell is Helping Ubuntu become a major Brand in the Market. :Furthermore Best Buy''s Geek Squad would help Ubuntu if they would set up demonstrations of Ubuntu at various Best Buys around the U.S.A Canada and Mexico.

  • @Freespire44

Well, Dell tried to help, but Ubuntu Dell series is about dead. They have 2 PCs what come with ubuntu now and it is 9.04

  • may I ask, why your videos aren't aviable to watch at HTML5?

    thanks for atention.

  • @DrT4sh YouTube's HTML5 doesn't work with ads, so most (if not all) partner videos won't work with HTML5 for the time being. sorry.

  • I hate that dell anti-theft device, where you have to call dell prove you are the owner and have to pay $50.00 to activate the computer.

  • @MrTabby5000 I haven't had to deal with that yet, hmm.

  • Dell will say what M$ wann to ;) buuu Dell! buuuu! ;)

  • and did u take part in the youtube ridley scott one day in ur life thingy?

  • @TheArnabDas I wanted to, but had too much going on yesterday and couldn't even get to a computer. :(

  • awesome vid! hmm...dell really doesnt like ubuntu does it? but in any case if one's really interested in ubuntu one would actually end up going to ubuntu(dot)com, so no fears. :)

yeah the $35 tablet is big news, i'm from India, and i'm sorta hoping that its usable, would gladly buy one! btw India does have the reputation of coming up with cheapest stuff, remember Tata Nano? cheapest car few yrs back? :)

loads of people who use ubuntu also use windows, mac and iphone. so i guess that way,its okay

  • @TheArnabDas I haven't heard of that Tata Nano. I'll look it up. Thanks!

  • U should check out the Android Eken M001, Tablet, I picked one up on ebay $90 Shipped free,. Plenty of apps out there for it too!

  • @cavibird2005 looks like it's got Android 1.6 on it. is it possible to update to 2.2?

  • @thisweekinlinux That depends upon how dedicated you are, it is Completely open source so i assume so.and It doesl boot to the SD card. . I have heard of people getting Ubuntu ARM on them but not stable.

If you decide to get one be sure to either build your own firmware or find one! (A lot out there) The factory firmware was horrible, if you tune it right they run great!

  • @cavibird2005 did a little reading on it, it seems like it's a bit of hit or miss getting 2.2 running on it. however, there are a few other $100 android tablets out there (Marvell is making one), hmm..

  • Google blocking ads? I find that hard to believe.

  • Jordan? You forgot to review Xubuntu. This is very important since many users with older machines are searching for a solution. They usually turn to puppy linux, but why not Xubuntu since it's also wonderful? I recently had a discussion with a friend, I sold him an old laptop a HP Omnibook good condition. The problem was that it was not upgradable (256 Mb memory, 20 Gb HD). He installed the Windows ME, but he is now to kick them out and install Xubuntu. Well he wanted a lap. for a cheap price.

  • @hrbear you're absolutely right, I did indeed. Hmm, not sure I want to review every desktop environment for Ubuntu specifically, but I'm working on something else that might make up for it. :)

  • flashblock from chrome is doing the same. flash is running in the background but is hidden

  • @ionutbiru ooh, interesting. thanks for mentioning it.

  • Turn to IBM Lenovo. The guys fully support linux ;-)

  • I need help. I installed Kubuntu 10.04 and i already had Ubuntu 10.04 on the hard drive and now i want to remove the Kubuntu pat in the hard drive so I can try out Mint. So how do I remove a partition?

  • @swantonhhh If you know which partition you have Kubuntu on, you can just stick the Mint CD in and do the install, making sure to select the Kubuntu partition. It will take care of the rest. Make sure you back up your data though, just in case.

  • Your presentation skills have improved immensely. I have always watched your videos but often thought you spoke a bit too fast. Now, not at all. I have always enjoyed and valued your work though.

  • @naMdoM thanks so much! Watching my older videos, I definitely spoke a lot faster. Even watching today's video, there were quite a few times I was speaking a bit too fast, but it's definitely slowed down overall.

    Thanks, man!

  • @thisweekinlinux I rather you speak fast, I get info faster, and I don't waste time hearing the... "mmm" "well... (long pause, because they don't know what else to say)" "silence (long ones)"

I find your info pretty usefull and easy to understand... and the best, you know what to say "all the time" in the video. That's my opinion. And thanks for that.

  • @OrlaxBit thanks very much! I do make it a point to cut out all the dead space and "um"s.

  • Your new vids rock even harder man. Great work!

  • @mguilmot thanks a lot! :)

  • @invnd1245 yup. it's a term coined by @WheezyWaiter to describe the description box. Lots of YouTubers are using it now (Vlogbrothers, RayWilliamJohnson, MysteryGuitarMan, etc)

  • I like what your doing with your new videos. Getting better and better!

  • @nvanadium thanks so much! I'm having a lot of fun doing it too, and that's what's important to me.

  • For ten dollars I'll buy it no matter who it's for.

  • @Yerzriknot I would too, and I'd love to review it...

  • Hey! You're funny! Who knew?

I enjoyed the injection of humor. I've noticed, You've become more and more comfortable with your on-camera presence since I first subscribed, it's been getting better and better. Keep up the great work.

  • @PaulRayIsMe hehe, I used to throw jokes into my old videos, but stopped for some reason. Thought I'd give it a shot again.

I'm definitely gaining more comfort in front of the camera too. Thanks! :)

  • Really great show man, loving the little bits of humor :)

  • @JamesOnBass121 thanks, glad to get feedback on it. :)

  • Good jokes, Jordan :D Great news. I love iPhone, so Ubuntu+iPhone=Goood! And you're probably right about the Dell thing. I haven't tried Damn Vul Linux yet. I'm gonna give it a whirl though. Btw, Im NOT a fan of the Mint Menu and thats probably why I don't use Mint. Mint xfce, with the xfce menu is perfect ;)

    Dooblydoo FTW!

  • @UbuntuHelpGuy the great thing about that (Mint) is you don't HAVE to use the menu if you don't want to. The LXDE version has LXPanel, so you can use that. on the gnome version, you can always switch back to the default Gnome menu.

  • Google is using NITRO boost but not to Chrome browser ,there are using it on chrome developers XD.They are going to have there asses work really hard to get new version every 6 weeks.

  • @darkodelta I seriously don't see it lasting more than a couple of months. eventually their devs will crack, hehe

  • You are a Linux teacher.

  • @CHVNX thanks! I try. :P

  • Ah I thought that Adblocking but download ads anyway is by design for Chrome. You don't want to see the ads but still want the web sites get paid if the ads are paid by page impression.

  • @DrSunnz yeah, it would make sense for it to be by design, but apparently it was webkit lacking a feature. I know with google you normally don't get paid by page impression, sadly.

  • I have heard about Damn Vul Linux but haven't really look it up...

I think I have a good use for it, my friends keep asking me if I can give them an account on my home server, I am gotta to set up a VM with DVL and give them access to that!! *evil grin*

  • @DrSunnz hah, that would show 'em.

  • Haha, funny episode, I lol'd 5 times.

  • @wariosdabest awesome! thanks so much!

  • your best vid so far. keep up the good work!

  • @Gt5OOkr thanks, will do!

  • yes sir you are right linux Mint LXDE runs much more smother than lubuntu in a Toshiba oldddddd laptop with only 250 ram an 40 gb hard drive

  • @lbaquerizo I don't think I've actually tried Lubuntu. I had a couple of friends tell me it was horribly buggy (and they were normal Ubuntu users) and I just haven't had a reason to.

  • Blargh Dell can suck it. Apple all the way ;)

  • good, 'cause I hate dell

  • @relampago21 hehe. won't be something I'll be doing often.

  • hey sup in other matter why not make video on html5.

  • @leveillerems do you mean I should talk about html5, or have youtube put the videos in html5 format? I don't think my videos will be html5 for a while, because they all have ads on them, and youtube's html5 doesn't support ads

  • hehe, the humor attempt made me laugh... that's a good sign ! Continue like this.

  • @Sekiryou2 awesome, thanks!

  • dvl seems pretty interesting, at least its original, unlike 90% of all distros. i doubt google is going to continuously release stable releases every 6 weeks, its probably something thats going to happen for a few months but eventually they're going to run out of things to improve. what i really don't get is if stable releases are released this often, how is that considered stable?

  • @schmidtbag I'd say it's more of a marketing ploy (the 6-week releases).

  • @VueltaAlPasado hehe, thanks. I started to realize that 4-5 minutes of news, while short, was very dry. Hopefully this helps a little.

  • Scary intro.

  • @SuperKittyPancake Emo Jordan is Emo. :P

  • I really enjoyed your humor in this video. I lol'd a few times. I actually never heard of DamnVulnerableLinux, thanks for sharing that information. :)

  • @H4x0r18 Glad you liked it. hehe

I'm really looking forward to trying out DVL.

  • Wait! Does HP own palm?

And i'll be first on eBay for one of those tablets I read the article yesterday

  • @StrangeRandomChannel HP does indeed own Palm. they picked them up not too long ago.

  • Wait, how are the HP tablet/Palmpad linux-related aside from the possibility that Android might have been a possible OS for the former? Maybe you got carried away with news or something? haha

  • @TheLifeRuiner The HP (the palmpad) tablet would be using WebOS, which is Linux-based., and I love talking about Linux tablets.

The $35 tablet is also going to be Linux-based. Definitely related, and covering Linux devices means more news per week. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux ah lol. I did not know WebOS was Linux-based. Cool! because I love WebOS!

  • @TheLifeRuiner I've got a good friend with a Palm Pre that has WebOS. he bought it because WebOS is Linux, and it's supposed to be really easy to develop for.

  • @thisweekinlinux Man, I wish WebOS was bigger! I love the Palm Pre...and I try to hype it to people whenever I can because it's a great phone (not so much anymore I guess, but still). I'm currently considering switching to Sprint, and were it not for the EVO, I would have gone with the Pre.

  • @jackrok :P hehe.

Really, for Canonical to make a Win/Mac app for Ubuntu One would be really nice, and a huge step forward. That said, I'd prefer to see all of it getting pushed upstream so other distros can implement it...

  • @jackrok oops, hehe

  • I like a bit of fun in you´re Videos

    *thumbs up!*

  • @crissescore Thanks. :) I actually used to put funny intros on every video, and I just stopped one day. Not quite sure why.

  • @jackrok just poking fun at the article complaining that dell hates Linux. just jokes, buddy. :)

  • @Nironan12 Thanks. :) Sometimes it's a bit of a stretch, so I'm only really saying what I think is funny at the time.

I'm not sure about that. I'd be willing to bet they've got quite a few devs that are Mac dual-booters. That would explain some of the UI changes they've been implementing. :P

  • Your $10 laptop gags and "Waaaait a second, Windows and Mac, don't care" got a nice lol from me :) Rad video as always.

  • @superjamiedotnet thanks. hehe :)

  • Thank you for the news. Me and My students are always viewing your videos, and we are learning alot from it... more power... muchas gracias senior... Philippines always support the linux community...

  • @baternajmbb Thanks very much!

  • hahaha, Nice one. I liked your remark about a Windows and Mac Ubuntu One client. The thing is though, if Canonical want to make some serious money from Ubuntu One, then they will need it to be on Windows and OS X. Dropbox and Spider Oak are mulitplatform and it's how you do it now days.

  • @GIMPMan1972 I'm inclined to agree there, otherwise Dropbox/SpiderOak are just better options for multiplatform.

  • Web os=sex

  • As for the whole ad block thingy; just block ads via host file.

  • "bad security...if it work with Windows, it might work for Linux"(something like that.)

Windows security has improve greatly in the last few releases. Also, it's not very hard to root a Linux box. Jordan, please laid off any freetardish commons like that. You're the most sane Linux youtuber; let's keep it that way.

  • @roboticterror ouch, man. It was a joke.

I realize that Windows has become a bit more secure, but it still doesn't hold a candle to Linux's security model.

  • @thisweekinlinux

Tell me, how is Linux more secure? How is it better?

  • @roboticterror I won't necessarily say it's better, that's up to individual opinion, but I'll say this much, it's a great deal more difficult to get viruses on Linux. The UAC things added with Win Vista and Win 7 do help somewhat, but most users (at least the ones I've dealt with) just click "Allow" and don't think twice. Being forced to enter your password makes people think twice.

That said, your tone tells me I'll probably be wrong no matter what I say. :P

  • @thisweekinlinux lol, I still love Windows.. *cough* I mean Arch *cough* :D

  • @FearedBliss cool. personally I'm not a fan, but if you are that's fine by me. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux LOL !! We were speaking about Arch before. How come you aren't a fan? My favorites distros are Arch, Debian, and Ubuntu.

  • @FearedBliss no no no. I meant I'm not a fan of Windows. :P

I'm definitely a fan of Arch. Rolling release ftw. (I'm on my Arch laptop at the moment).

    Going to bed, though. G'night!

  • @thisweekinlinux Ah ok, yea I love Arch, that's what I was referring to when I was coughing. I use Windows but eeh lol. Arch <3

  • @thisweekinlinux Good night !

  • @thisweekinlinux just make sure you do pacman -Syu and then shutdown -h now ;D

  • @thisweekinlinux If I may add... When a security hole/vulnerability is found in a Linux distro, patches and fixes usually show up in days and sometimes even hours, unlike windows, where it takes months, years and sometimes not at all.

  • @PaulRayIsMe How about that backdoor in UnrealIRCd that was in there for months?

  • @roboticterror First off, that exploit was in UnrealRCd and not a Linux Distro issue and UnrealRCd is not in the official repositories. However, things happen, nobody's perfect, but the point is, they get fixed.

This was a fluke and from what I can tell, a one off event. It hardly brings into question that Linux is Much More Secure than Windows and that vulnerabilities are addressed quickly, once discovered.

  • @thisweekinlinux So if I clueless user on Ubuntu, allows and runs malware(not know it is) thats fries his system; Does that mean Ubuntu has bad security?

Also, how is security a matter of "individual opinion"?

  • @roboticterror I never said it was impossible. At the end of the day, the user is the most insecure part of any operating system.

As far as "individual opinion", it's clear that we're both pretty biased. I've watched your videos and read your twitter, it seems your opinion of Linux is pretty low, and at this point you're trolling.

I'd love to spend more time talking to a brick wall, but I've got to go out of town on family stuff. Have a great weekend.

  • @thisweekinlinux Someone watched my videos! But I'm not trolling; I'm just sick of zealotry. It's push people like myself away from Linux. Also, great way to put aside my comments by declaring me a troll for being skeptical about the state of Linux and FOSS. Yes I have fun while doing to it and some my videos are purely jokes, but that doesn't mean I'm a troll.

And if I was trolling I would say something like "Linux has not games" or I'll talk about market share. Enjoy your weekend.

  • @roboticterror My sincere apologies. Between some of your comments and videos, it seemed like you were just looking for a fight. If you're skeptical, I'll try to do more research after the weekend to get more specifics on windows vs Linux security.

    Again, sorry to judge.

  • @thisweekinlinux

Umm... if you are a limited user it asks for a password every time. If you are Root on linux it wont ask for a password or anything. If you are root (admin) on windows it still gives you UAC, UNLESS you are in safe mode. Linux has a very outdated permission system. It is crudely layered. NT 6 and 6.1 have very nicely layered, modern permission systems. Also, security is never a matter of opinion. If my opinion was 98 has better security than Solaris, is it true? No.

  • @JamesManes You're very right. But if you notice, a traditional windows install sets the user up as admin, and most Linux installs make the user a sudoer.

  • @thisweekinlinux

So? Ubuntu has /var and /tmp executable by default which is horrible.

  • @JamesManes and Windows has everything executable by default, with the default user being an admin. I don't see the point...

  • @thisweekinlinux

In unix land executable means read/write access, and windows does NOT have that for everything by default. You must use UAC, and in some cases you must manually edit the permissions via folder properties just to be able to view the folder.

  • @JamesManes so /var and /tmp are full read/write by default? Because I'm looking at both of those directories right now, and /tmp is read/write for the default user, but /var isn't. it's just read/execute. that little write flag isn't set for non-root.

  • @thisweekinlinux This issue is not really linux specific. It is all of UNIX. brainstorm.ubuntu (DOT) com/item/8156/

This will shed more light on it, but it seems Linux has changed the original meaning of executable in the permission system. Oh well.

  • @JamesManes see, that's a pretty interesting issue there. thanks for pointing that out. really, there shouldn't be many things in the system that are executable...

  • @JamesManes you are simply wrong. There is already a solution for that. It can be solved by put /var or /etc in a separate partition (but not /dev /proc) and use different mount flags (noexec for example). But better use SELinux to limit execution to those places where it needed.

This issue is just in your head!

  • @adee625

I know that is a fix to the issue, but my point was that parts of the linux permission system are limited. This is pointing that out. WINDOWS doesn't have to separate partitions to change such a silly permission. It is just a silly UNIX flaw.

  • @JamesManes when UNIX was created, it was a good permission system. It stayed for historical/compatibility reasons. Placing those mount point to different partitions is just one possibility, have you ever heard about SELinux? There is NO need for separate partitions, just set up the selinux policies and you are good. Not harder, than editing the Group Policies in Windows

  • @adee625

I was targeting Ubuntu more than anything.. but yes SELinux helps. SuSe is very good about this.

  • @thisweekinlinux he doesn't know what he's been saying. Just plain wrong....

  • @JamesManes Elaborate rather than just make blatant remarks with no backing. You do understand why a directory has bit 1 set right? You do know what I mean by that? You know what a mode of 755 is? Id REALLY like to hear why you think executable on /tmp is bad. Im wagering you dont even understand what DAC stands for let alone how it works. Are you googling for the answer now? Ooo. Look at that "t" at the end that MUST be bad, right!? LOL +x != rw Thats the first clue to you having one.

  • @daeamarth There are so many exploits that could be used when /tmp is executable. debian-administration (DOT) org/article/Making_/tmp_non-executable

There. Look that and then we can discuss.

  • @JamesManes 2004 article. No exploit listed. SELinux stops those cold. noexec on /tmp breaks numerous enterprise level applications during install (oracle, jboss, aptest are a few). Why can your apache server fork a shell? Why is it not chrooted? If users have shell access noexec/tmp isnt doing to do jack. You have bigger problems if they can exploit your machine by executing code. See the video response. When you learn selinux then we can discuss. This goes back to the core of this 'debate'.

  • @JamesManes The biggest problem with /tmp is its part of Root LV and can fill the system. Of course on your desktop this is moot. If its a server... Why are you using default anything for a server? Unless of course you are the typical windows admin or a (at best) entry level linux administrator. Im still waiting for your exploit on a modern system. You words, we are talking about now not then and yet you keep bringing up "then".

  • @daeamarth

SELinux seems to do the job. I admit defeat.

  • @JamesManes Thats only the tip of the iceberg. Im not trying to defeat you. The point was you were making unsubstantiated claims about something you do not obviously understand. That is what irks me and is an insult to the community and frankly to yourself. Its not a competition. Its about the truth. Fact is I dont know security compared to those in the field. All sides of these debates spread FUD(even linux though the ubuntu crowd seems to propagate more) and frankly I tire of it.

  • @daeamarth I THOUGHT I knew. Slight difference.

  • @daeamarth

... yes that was a joke

  • @JamesManes Wrong. Windows didnt even have an RBAC system of any real caliber until well after Win2K Pro(it was more a simple MAC). Most SELinux setups dont restrict root but there are policies that cripple root to the point you cant even reboot or say edit firewall rule sets. UAC and SELinux with MLS are about equivalent. DAC is the ancient permission system on U/Linux. You obviously havent used any of the systems for over a decade. You're state isnt even an opinion. Its just wrong.

  • @daeamarth

When did I ever say anything previous to 2K had that? Never.

I am talking about today, 2010, not 1999. Also, windows has group policies to that go more in-depth than linux. I think you need to learn about this thing called gpedit.msc in windows. Go look it up or use it yourself.

Finally, I have Ubuntu in a virtual machine and I toy around with other distros such as arch, gobo, opensuse, etc. So yes, I HAVE been using them.

  • @JamesManes You didnt say 2K but then you didnt specify. You are wrong again though. Group policies are merely an implementation of rules someone made for you. SELinux (RBAC, MLS, TE) has been made(even commercial mgt products), can be made far more granular than anything windows has. Especially when tacked on to the ancient extended attributes to perform ACL, the typical DAC and to top it off "capabilities" within the kernel. All of which have been around for over a decade, some even longer.
