  • My favorite Rod Stewart song of all time!! I've heard a couple of live versions on here but nothing compares to this version. The solo on this song is incredible going from acoustic to electric is classic! I can hear this song again and again and not get tired of it. I feel like enjoying like this song like Rod would and slap on some headphones and sip on a Lowenbrau.

  • For the record the beer in his hand was Lowenbrau...brand not made anymore to my knowledge.

  • That pic was on my room. walls ..when posters were the thing...I was suppose to marry him..problem was I was the only one who knew it...no one told Rod...he had a thing for very blond and younger girls.....my loss...ahhhh.

  • The guitaring part at the end is still one of the best ever !

  • yep, first time i heard it was 18. was anything but a ladies man, but i'm not gay. But yet, I understand his sentiment, his honesty and how beautiful it traslated into music, and explanation of his youth and times of his youth. the instrumental section kicks ass too...a truly great great song... one of the best of its time. go rod. :)

  • Merci Rod tu me rapelle toujours mes meilleurs souvenirs de vacances :'D <3

  • @touipify Eh?

  • Oh man. Working eight hours in the sun to get $20 split 5 ways with my homies. Two racks of Budweiser, a carton of Marlboros, split 4 ways, 'cause Louis didn't smoke and all the Rod Stewart we could handle until the cops chased us home. The 70's were kinda lame,, but Rod made it all a little better.

  • @AnoziraNoscut yeah i'm 44 now and looking back it was kinda lame

  • I was also only jokin' but fucked myself

  • thank the good Lord for ROD !!!

  • looks like a lowee rods drinking as in Lowenbrau

  • esta cancion la tocaron Guns N Roses en vivo si no me equivoco

  • the story of my youngest and melancholiness life

  • From 3:10 to 4:42, isn't that one of the most sublime guitar solos, with the transition from acoustic to electric you'll ever want to hear..?.

And now for the pedantic: at the tail end of the song, given the confession the song puts forth, should he have sang "owning up for posterity..", instead of "owning up for prosperity.." ? Was it the lyrics or the singer who erred?

Unequivocally though, one of his best ever, if not the the absolute dog's bollocks. of what he was capable of.

  • @ukgolfa Owning up for prosperity seems wrong but then you think that he might be feeling that he shouldn't be making money from it. That's not a criticism, just a comment on the lyrics and how he might have meant it like that.

  • @gzornenplat Cheers mate, appreciate the reply...but my comment was to illustrate either the songwriter or the singer in this instance used the wrong word. If you're owning up to something that you've done, and the legacy you believe it leaves for history, what you've done is own up to the "posterity" of it.

  • good song but it's a rip off. Check out Dylan's Simple twist of fate and you'll see what i'm talking about.

  • @0live0wire0

As I've always said to myself, it's a matter of taste, to me this song is by far much better than the one you mentioned

  • Good song also maybe its just me but at around 2:08 to 2:14 I swear I hear a lil of the Beatles song In My Life , IDK maybe its just me. Came here by accident and found a new song I like.

  • @whycntwebfriends You're right!

  • Wow high schools days back in the 80's.

I was just a kid with a small heart. But that was just a part of growing up and dealing with life.

  • Reminds me of my Dad and all the fun we had back in the '70's...love you, Dad!!

  • Cant music be produced like this anymore, the 70's were the best,ma dad said rod sounded like a cat being skinned alive, but he said how can i guy that sounds ut of tune sound so GOOD he is a massin ,then again so was my dad,

  • my neighbour called the cops cuz i played this to loud the arrested him lol

  • rod's best and i'm not joking... great comment in here. like many others, i feel that the song is a pretty good discription of my life as well. after all, i'm very alone (not too lonely though), my sweetheart wife drops by to see me every month or so and the guy that comes to pick up my rent money so the lyrics hit home. thanks for posting such a great sound quality vid reynaldo, it's real ear candy :)

  • This reminds me of my dad, he used to say we looked rediculous

  • @stevewantsit1

    And you spell ridiculous(ly)

  • autobiographical...for more than Rod...

  • @MrWoof86 Me neither! I think that's why I'm very happily middle aged now, because I did all the things when I was young while I was young enough to do them! That way you have no regrets and life is good.....

  • this song tears me up. it was the theme song to an ex of mine that remained a good friend who died almost 4 years ago. this song was written for him it seems like........cant here it without crying hysterically

  • I love this song 4 many reasons... Love 2 my sister who passed

Aliena Sue MAjestic.. R.I.P I remember making u so many cds of ur favs.. I will miss u but will see u soon.... u were older then me, but u will always be 2 me my lil sister(I never mined taking care of you..

  • i am a fan of rods, and had several love affairs to the soundtrack of his love songs, in fact made a audio tape called just that years before his record co did the same ,but this song gets under my skin, every time i hear it i get goose bumps,so well performed, and the guitar break is so much longer than most in songs but somehow is not long enough, will remain in my top 50 of all time sounds

  • That guitar solo is really awesome!

  • I,m 54 ... I bought the Album " Footloose and Fancy Free" with some tokens i got as gifts for my 21st .( vinyl of course ).. geeze where has the years went ... i lived my life like this song then and i still do...ha ha So Mr.Stewart it,s your fault my love life has been the roller coaster it has .... thanks .. i would not have missed a minute :)

  • I wish I could blame it on the wine.

  • @deerfieldproductions For many years - almost thirty, in fact - I was under the impression that Stewarty had sung the words "I wasted all that precious time, and blamed it on the wife"!

My hearing was never 'A1', as it were, even as a youth.

I should have realised, when this excellent track was in the charts all those years ago [1978] that the words "blamed it on the wife" didn't really make any sense, in the context of the song.

  • @MrWoof86 Agreed! And fear of (sexual) commitment is by no means exclusively a male 'thing'. In this day and age, there are plenty of young women - or 'birds', as many of us call them here in the UK(!) - who shag around on a casual basis, and who want to put off getting into a serious, "adult" relationship for as long as possible. Girls who come into this category are often called "ladettes" (on this side of the Atlantic, at any rate).

"I Was Only Joking" is a great track; a classic.

  • @MrWoof86 Well, I agree with what you say - up to a point, aar. But I suspect that the figure of 90% which you quote is probably WAY too high. "I Was Only Joking" is a song about the lifestyle of a LADIES' MAN/SUPERSTUD in his late teens and early twenties. There is no way that 90% - or even 50% - of guys in that age range come into that category. Only a minority of the male population are highly attractive to the opposite sex, and are capable of "collecting lovers like butterflies".

  • Simple, The best.

  • fuck

  • Enjoyed it. Thanks for posting!

  • I wish I had rod's good looks..

  • @dockie1964 That is hardly surf*****gprising! There must be literally MILLIONS of guys on God's Earth (probably 10's of millions) who wish that they had 'Stewarty's' good looks and immense pulling power. I am one of them, by the way, so i am. Rod is a natural born ladies' man; in that respect, he reminds me of the late, great Georgie Best - the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland soccer star who passed away (at a relatively early age) in November 2005.

  • @TheEctomorph I bet you are a 5ft 10 hunk with sexy brown eyes so why would you want to look like Rod?remember some of those woman may be shallow and go with him just because he is a star i also like Rod but mainly for his singing, its allways the voice that wins me i know its helps if a singer has looks hope i dont sound shallow nowLOL

  • @TheEctomorph Then again i know you are a 5ft 10inchs hunk with sexy brown eyes as you are the love of my life and i dont think ROD looks as hot as you but i do like his singing a lot.

  • @MsRuth02 Bless u, hun. Thank u soooooooooo much for those compliments; I am blushing as I write (or rather type) this message! NO ONE (male or female) has ever told me that I look better than Rod Stewart before. As u know, 'Stewarty' is one of my great musical heroes - I have been into his music, in a big way, ever since I was a young lad of 12 or 13, growing up in a Norwich suburb (back in 1977/'78).

Personally, I don't think that I am even in the same 'league' as Stewarty - lookswise.

  • @TheEctomorph Yes i do know how much you enjoy Rods music no wonder he is one of the best,as i said before and will say again i prefer your looks you are in a hot LEAGUE of your own in the looks department and thats the truth

  • Reminds me of summer 77 :) Great times!!

  • great f**king album!!! classic f**king classic!!

  • Ah

    memories,

remember '77 like iy was yesterday!!

  • great music, why i always like oldies music..than today's music.. well im 21 now.. in fact i never grew up with this kind of lovely music and bands.. rod stewart was my dads favorite singer.. maybe i inherit this to him :)

actually i just heard this sing 2 hours ago. when i was riding a car with my friend. i keep asking them whats the title of this song, no one reply..damn.!! they miss the beauty of music.. !! keep on rocking guys! :)

  • Creeping home before it got too light.. I remember that! My favourite Rod song, I always liked his reflective songs much better than the do ya think I'm sexy stuff! He's a class act, and someone who's managed to keep his feet on the ground, despite fame and all that goes with it.

  • this and tonights the night are rods best songs

  • How about the best song fing ever??

  • best song in the world

  • Rod hit #22 in Billboard, 6-24-78. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Ill always remember this, a drunken man singin me this, on a summers night just a week ago, shit will haunt me, hope he makes it out, he spoke the troof. -Mr.KK!

  • HERMOSO TEMA DE UN GRAN CANTANTE

  • superb..............

  • Guys,

Can anyone please tell me the names of the Guitar Players for this track ?

    Many thanks for sharing.

    Kindest ................Roby

  • @Roby1able Yes Jim Cregan and Gary Grainger who were the guitarists in The Rod Stewart Group 1975 - 1981 Also Billy Peek played guitar with Carmine Appice drums Phil Chen bass Kevin Savigar keyboards Phil Kenzie sax Jim Cregan still works with Rod from time to time and probably played accoustic on this track as he can be heard famously with the guitar break on Steve Harley's smash Make me Smile! Check out the Hot Legs video on You Tube and you will see the 'great ' Rod Stewart Group in full!!

  • Rod I love you, you really are a great..

  • @Cicciuzzo92c Whatever became of him?

  • Moving stuff ...... as Simon Bates, the distinguished radio presenter/'DJ' once said, after playing the track on his Radio 1 mid-morning programme, back in the early 1980's.

"I Was Only Joking" has come in for its fair share of 'flak' from pop/rock critics over the yearsj, but in my eyes, it is a great single - a classic. I think that 'Stewarty' has every right to be proud of it.

  • I picked this song well over 25 years ago, to play at my funeral. Not to be morbid, but it coincidentally, sums up my life perfectly. Except for me it's not Susie. It's Jeff.

  • I picked this song well over 25 years ago, to play at my funeral. Not to be morbid, but it coincidentally, sums up my life perfectly. No one can top Rod.

  • This song was played at my uncles funeral last week never heared it before then and it's a really moving song

  • @Daniel92Lost Yes, indeed it is. I must say that i am more than a lil surprised that you had never heard this song until very recently. I can only assume that you come from a much younger generation than myself! (I am 46). Rod Stewart is a very talented man, who has made many fine singles - and indeed albums - since he first rose to prominence in the pop/rock music business, way back in 1971. May I suggest that you buy a copy of a Double CD called ''Rod Stewart: The Story So Far".

  • I have always loved this song for 2 reasons

1 Its Rod at his best

2 I now know who I am and all the pain from my past has finally gone!

Thankyou Rod your the one and only!

  • one of his best!

  • una de las mejores canciones de este gran musico cantante compositor

  • @mach1franco

I totally agree with you on that one pal, those were the days

  • there won't be any thumb down for this one, how can there be? Just play it again..

  • " Illusions of that grand first prize..." Those have not faded yet :D

  • This was about his first girlfriend susanne who had his first child with

  • i am a better man for hearing this song!

  • this is one of my favourite Rod tracks. the lyrics are what nearly everyone can relate to, especially " In and out of jobs running free, waging war with society, dumb, blank faces stared back at me but nothing ever changed. promises made in the heat of the night, creeping home before it got too light, i wasted all that precious time, and blamed it on the wine"

  • love it , brillant.

  • Give props to Ronny Wood for his guitar work on this gem.

  • @dcrew2000 This is from Rod's solo album, Footloose & Fancy Free... Ronnie Wood did not play on that album. The guitarists here are Jim Cregan and Gary Grainger. And their playing here is brilliant!

  • This is one of the greatest lost gems in all rock history. What great lyrics and melody and musicianship and oh that Mod Rod the Bod smooth delivery just sends the whole song over the top. Shear brilliance. Peace.

  • soundtrack of my life so far lol

  • @whillythewimp Oh heck, that was the song of my YOUTH, let alone my 'life'. I hear ya brother

  • I remember hearing this song when I was a kid, but I never knew who sang it or even what it was called. Needless to say, I figured it out with the age of the internet and all . . . One of the best songs ever - thanks Rod!

  • Thankyou for this mate. Really appreciated.

  • mighty fine!!! i had to rush out and get that album when it came out and then again later when i wore that one out... i was young and me & my first love went our seperate ways so this became one of my breoken heart songs. it wrenched my heart at the time, now it's just a great song. it still reminds me though :)
