  • It doesn't work with Orange Juice.

  • how does this video only have 58k views when shit like swagger jagger probably has about 1m+ views

  • how comes this wasn't really a song that got noticed?

  • I seriously love Bev, she is such an underrated talent - I honestly think her vocal ability is so far beyond anyone else right now, yet no one seems to appreciate it. I really hope that this collab gets her some of the recognition she more than deserves! GO OUR BEV! :D

  • love it (:

  • Is it just me or does this woman look like Oleta Adams?

  • She's way too good for this

  • Its pretty good yet pretty gay at da same time. I guess dats how da UK give it up. You know its from UK if its borderline gay lol. Although the ydo seem to ave the best vocalist.

  • @Jaybrillzz i completly agree and im from scotland lol

  • why the fuck has she ruined 'Rip It Up'???

  • I love this song, Beverly Knights rocks!

  • One of the best voices to grace this planet and they go and use autotune on her voice for the sake of fashion.....Grrrr! >:-(

  • I prefer the version without Chipmunk.

  • Ehm yeah, why the discussion guys? It's a cool song, that's what matters. :)

  • I like ths song so muchh!! :)

  • deep SoNg *&*&*(^(%^$££^__________________^

  • tuunne

  • Great tune, love it.

  • wearing my glasses who is this guy

  • Seen her in concert!! GREAT XXX

  • Love this song

    Go Bev and Chipmunk :)

  • Ok, we get it. You're never going to like this song (you keep mentioning the music used), but do not say Beverley lacks talent, when she so obviously doesn't. She oozes talent and soul.

Also, how is Beverly trying to be Whitney Houston? Enlighten me, please. Both are very talented artists, both are completely different artists and both cater for a completely different market. Both are amazing at what they do, but can never be compared. They are completely different.

  • She is fantastic, whatever she does!!!! you know nothing guys!!! how can even compare her to Whitney - where do you see the similarities???!!!!

  • A truly talented artist can cover any song they want and not only pull it off, but make it their own in the process.

Also, more commercial music needs a non-ironic non-gimmicky funk flavour like this.

  • She blatenly wants to be Whitney Housten, think she's been studying her a LOT. Love Chipmunk.

  • Her music is nothing like Whitney Houston's! :-S

  • lol you idiot, her vocal styling is nothing like Whitney's! Just appreciate the music or get back to obsessing over Leona Lewis or Christina Aguilera you mad stan.

  • It baffles me that some people still find it within themselves to try and slate one of the best talents we have here. Beverley Knight is such an underrated talent, her work needs to be appreciated.

She has composed some amazing music within her career, so to say that she lacks talent or originality for using the music from a song just holds no weight, infact, your whole attitude towards her highlights your ignorance towards material she has produced over the past fifteen years or so.

  • amazing

  • chip's soo cutee

  • i love love love this song...go bev.. and chipmunk is sooooo cute!!! also love him =D

  • Beverley is not only an extremely talented singer, but also an inspiration and an amazing individual. She does countless charity work, was awarded an MBE by the Queen, and is so down-to-Earth. She is a credit to our great nation.

  • A credit to the nation certainly but we're hardly great

  • remember this being sampled before yearrrrsss ago on a hip hop scratch track but beverly knight kiks arse and has made it her own,, chipmonk dunt do much for it and probly aint heard of edwin collins but i spose bevs being modern and stickin a rap over the sample, fair play.. over all its an 8/10 wudav been 9 but its a second hand idea to use the orange juice track :)

  • Careful you misspelled EdwYn,TopopMAc will be angry with you.

I wasn't aware it had been sampled already but OMG on a scratch track : (. I agree it is a second hand idea using a Orage Juice song. I would actually have liked the song if she had just came up with an orginal tune

  • yep sampled around 1992

had a few cuts and stuff but the main sample was the orange juice riff, sure its been looped another time so its kinda 3rd hand lol,, looks like beverly has realy used a lot of it but to excellent effect :)

  • Not in my opinion, but that's just my opinion : )

However I just wished she put an orginal tune to it and left Rip it up alone

  • love thiss!

  • I haven't got a problem with sampling if it's used in an interesting and innovative way rather than just lifting the entire backing track a la Sugarbabes - even the original track by Orange Juice nicks a riff and a few lyrics from 'Boredom' by Buzzcocks but it's done with originality and warmth. Unfortunately, after listening to this a few times, it's neither interesting or innovative - all a bit old hat really.

  • Beverley Knight is one of the best talents we have in this country, so it baffles me why people feel they have to try and bring her down just because she sampled a song, she sampled it, big deal. She's probably got a few people interested in the sampled song because of this.

As for people sampling because they have no talent, I think you need to clean your ears out and relisten to some of Beverley's earlier work. If you cannot see Beverley has talent, more fool you. She's one of the best.

  • She is the best female and she is so lovely!

  • Is Bev Knight so desperate for a hit that she has to take a classic song for this song lyrics. As the BBC Review said 'doesnt so much sample Orange Juices Rip It Up as sit on its back and ride it to market.'

The only good thing about this mess is that Edwin Collins will get a big chunk of the royalties (I hope Bevs get the flop she deserves)

Do yourself a favour and listen to the original Orange Juice Rip It Up

  • Shame you can't actually spell Edwyn's name correctly!

AND actually he loves what she's done with it:

"I recently met Edwyn Collins, lead singer and composer of the band who went on to have huge success as a solo artist, and he loves what I have done with it!!"

It's a great use of sampling!

  • Ooh I made a typo big fat hairy deal

EdwYn Collins likes it and thats his opinion see his web site(I went to the oricle not the acolate to check the info)

My opinion (and of a few friends who love and bought the orginal song) is its rubbish but I must confess Ive never liked sampling its just for those untalented people who lack originality and are too lazy to write there own stuff.

  • If you were a fan I thought you'd spell his name right! Beverley has written 99.9% of her material if you did research instead of spouting unfounded, biased opinions. Edwyn likes it as displayed on his Twitter & web site. I posted Twitter links to futher prove the point but they wouldn't work. Bev is hardly untalented, that's an unfair statement. She's a fantastic vocalist. Many people I've played it to think it's a great use of the sample. It's all down to opinion but no need to be insulting.

  • I didn't say I was a EdwYn Collins fan thats an assumption that you made but I love the original song and this just ruins it. But as you think it ok to steal bits of song you wouldn't understand the anger that people who like originality feel over rip-offs.

Also if she writes 99% of her own stuff why is every track on new album co-written with at least one other person and in one case 6 writers (excluding the Bee Gees Song) & you accuse me of spouting off without doing research.

  • So you're saying that if someone co-writes a song that doesn't mean she writes? That's ridiculous... are you saying that all the members in bands that don't help co-write the band's material are talentless? That's rubbish! Most people co-write their material... One of the songs Beverley has written herself is "Gold"... the majority she writes the melody and lyrics. She's not stealing, she's sampled and credited Edwyn, who likes it. She hardly ever samples, instead of picking on one song...

  • ...check out her other material. If she'd done a direct cover of the song, you'd be saying EXACTLY the same thing regarding originality. She has taken a song, sampled it and made something new in a completely different genre. That's called being creative with a song you love. Check out Come As You Are, Gold, Shoulda Woulda Coulda, No Man's Land, Sista Sista amongst others, all of which do not contain samples, as well as so many of her other songs.

  • You said she wrote 99% of her stuff herself. she doesn't she co-writes it ( nothing wrong with that, look at Lennon & McCartney)

As for covering a song, which she does on the new album, nothing wrong with that as long as she does it her way rather just copy the orginal.

And you still don't get SHE HASN'T SAMPLED, ie taken a part of, but TAKEN THE ENTIRE TUNE lock stock & barrel. That is even lazier than sampling and totally lacking in orginality.

Still EdwYn Collins will get royalties

  • That's just being pedantic, co-writing is still WRITING her material! She did "Too Much Heaven" as Robin Gibb requested she perform it with him at a live event and so they decided to record it together... (he does backing vocals on it) and as for the sample... the whole song is pretty much based around the same riff. The saxophone middle-8 isn't sampled at all so she hasn't taken the entire tune. The song she's written still has a completely different melody and lyrics!

  • Not pedantic just accurate.

But you won't understand the difference just as you don't understand the difference between sampling and taking a entire tune and writing your own stuff and co-writing it.

  • She has sampled it... that's why it states that this is the case inside the booklet of the album; otherwise he would have just been credited as a co-writer. As I said before, she doesn't sample the whole song (If you can tell me where the saxophone middle 8 part of the Orange Juice song features in this, I will be happy to be proved wrong! :-))

  • AND of course I know the difference between writing and co-writing... but co-writing it's STILL writing and taking part in your material either way. Bev also plays piano and constructs her melodies and lyrics. Without that, you have a backing track, so YES, she does WRITE her material actually! As Ive suggested already, listen to Gold, her own composition in its ENTIRETY if you wish to get anal about it!

  • To say that she's desperate is ridiculous, she's on her own label so she could take more control of her material, she was flown out by Prince to perform with him and Stevie Wonder at his post Oscars party and she's worked with Chaka Khan on the new album. Personally, I'd take the endorsement of talented legends like that over anyone elses opinion!

  • Also check out another one of her songs she completely composed... "Remember Me". There's a performance on here with Jools Holland playing keys! :-)

  • I checked out the video and a very good live performamce by Jools .. and the singer wasn't bad either LOL. She sounds as good live as the record, which I like in a performer. But still disappointed that she had to lift the tune and ruin one of my favourite records

  • Wow if she talented then why does she need to rip off the orange juice tune? I could understand is she had limited talent, needed to kick start her career and desperate for a hit

As for endorsements, Simon, personally I'd sooner form my own opinion rather than accepting someone elses ; )

  • Because she liked the song and always wanted to do it, plain and simple.

I of course have my own opinion, but my opinion is also backed up by legends... so, as I said... if my opinion is being backed up by legends like the ones I listed, others include Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Quincy Jones and Carlos Santana, I don't think I can be far wrong! :-)

I totally respect that you don't like the use of the sample though, that's completely fair enough. We can't all like the same thing!

  • As far as I'm aware, sampling can involve taking the majority of the tune as well, it's common practice.

I don't see how writing new lyrics over the tune is lacking in originality. Anyway, it's not like she's never composed a song in her time. I can only think of one other song where she's made a similar sample and (obviously) the covers she's done. She created the melodies, wrote the lyrics and arranged the vocals on the whole Prodigal Sista album.

  • Mmmmmm maybe i'm showing my age here. But my approach to music is its ether original or you cover a song and put your own spin it. Using other peoples work always strikes me a lazy approach

  • AND you are spouting off because co-writing is still composing, but you bounce ideas off the other writers. Bev usually only co-writes with one other person. Fair enough if you don't like her sampling the song but saying she's desperate, with no originality is blatantly spouting off and based on one song and nothing else!

  • Beverley Knight lacks originality?!?

She's sampled, where's the problem. As a songwriter the hardest part to writing a song is the melody and lyrics, there are only a certain amount of chords and chord progressions you can use! So she's sampled, so what?! This is one the finest British singers we are talking about, surely once and a while in almost 15 years she is allowed to do a bit of sampling!!!!

  • She hasn't sampled she has taken the entire tune and with DJ Munro & Dex Nicholson messed it up. I wouldn't mind if she had taken a crap tune and made it better

  • I don't know how to put it more eloquently than Beverley did herself in this song.

"What's the sense in all the drama? hate is such a waste of time"

"Get yourself a life and make it work!"

You might think it's lazy, but it happens a lot, get over it. See it as a tribute to the original, as it was intended. At least she wrote the lyrics.

  • Yes it happens a lot but if she wanted to do a tribute then do her own version of the song and put her own spin on it or if she is so talented do her own stuff

Sampling happens a lot but its lazy and aimed soley at using a known melody to quickly hook the listener to sell mediocure songs

  • If you don't like sampling then why do you like the "original" by Orange Juice? Or has it totally skipped your attention that the solo from RIU is lifted from a track called Boredom? Moron

  • Well i didn't know that idiot (which for your information is two steps lower than moron on the IQ Scale).

RIU including a sample is the exception that proves the rule. usuallysampling is lazy but at least Mr Collins didn't RIP OFF THE ENTIRE TUNE.

Now butt out and let the grown ups talk

  • Nope, he just ripped off the entire solo which is even worse. He didn't do anything with it, just lifted the solo off.

Please do send me this IQ scale you're speaking of, I wonder how far down Ettrick appears, if it even warants an appearance.

  • So he took a solo and worked it into a great song which you belive is worse that taking the whole tune! A strange attitude to take but based on your posts understandable

The IQ scale is the Wechsler IQ scale introduced in 1955 and was a refinement of the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale.

Ettrick won't appear on the scale as its an area in Scotland but only someone like yourself with a rating of Profound Idiocy wouldn't realise that

  • Well the "whole tune" is basically a little riff on a loop so it's hardly stealing a whole tune.

I know exactly what the IQ scale is and only a flaming idiot would use it as a frame of reference to measure intelligence.

Whoosh, straight over your head! Am I supposed to be offended because I haven't heard of some obscure dump in Scotland?

  • told lol

  • hes the biggest faggot goin

  • Get yourself an original backing track more like, cheeky bitch.

An insult to Orange Juice's alternative pop classic.

  • Seriously, if it' such a tragedy and you hate it so much, stop whinging like a broken record you and stop subjecting yourself to it!

  • Oh I do apologise I didn't realise that I was not allowed to have an independent opinion on these pages and I had to conform to your views only. I will now go and listen to nothing but Beverley Knight, Michael Jackson and Beyonce until I am your clone.

PS if you hadn't answered my posts I wouldn't be back here being subjected to this torture

  • Do yourself a favour and piss off then, gobby fucker!

  • Ha Ha Your cracked first

Game, set and match to me not go off to your corner and listen to Michael Jackson

    Be seeing you

  • your cracked first? What are you drivelling on about now? Is this the epitome of your life, sitting on a chair and scoring points on a message board?

I really do sugest you listen to the lyrics and get yourself a life mate! What a saddo...
