  • They were a great band, weren't they? I love these guys, and I love Crowded House, too. Such terrific songs, melodies, and harmonies.

  • does pop music get any more perfect than this? I think not!

  • What a great video. I just luv their suits. They were one of the great bands of their era. Like, like, like.

  • I love Split Enz, they were pop but I think there was something genuinely punk about them too.

  • @amcd981 they weren't very pop in '75/'76... quite innovative, actually.

  • Good fortune by PJ harvey, also found inspiration in this songstructure

  • come as a friend by nirvana: inspired by this no duobt

  • I'm 13 and Split Enz are one of my favourite bands, Skrillex can go have a seizure from looking at one of Neil's suits too long :P

  • Their sometimes outlandish theatrical stage and video performances often draw attention away from just how good their songs were. While Phil Judd (in the early days) and the two Finn brothers were the most prolific songwriters, they could all write and arrange quality songs. Noel Crombie was the theatrical arranger for the shows, but later he took over as drummer for a time and proved suprisingly good.

  • NEIL'S SUIT!!!

  • Noel Crombie,Nigel Griggs, Eddie Raynor the Real heart of Split enz.

  • Where can I get a suit like that?

  • @derjukee

    90s bed spreads :D

  • the enz forever!!!!!

  • Why didn't this video end up with the rest on the History Never Repeats vhs?

  • @nancie72 Split Enz have never produced a video compilation that's included every single video. You won't see clips like 'She's Got Body', 'Crosswords' or 'Spellbound' on any of their commercially released compilations. I believe there is even a laser-disc (and VSH home video) of 'True Colours'. This clip is found on a DVD which is simply titled 'Split Enz'. In truth, the group were very prolific in the field of videos. Just keep looking on YouTube.

  • Such a great video. I especially love Ed's moves at @0.48 - 0.57 and Noel's constant facial expression. They're inimitable.

  • I gotta get me one of those bad-ass suits.

  • How did I ever miss this song? I thought I had all of their back catalog!

  • did it inspire nirvana 'come as you are' ?

  • Great band, great production, horrible look.

  • Just wondering if these guys were ever labeled the New Zealand Devo???

  • @MagnusVideos no, they weren't... ever

and they're not going to start being labelled that now.

  • @nzoz1979 lmao Yeh I like Devo but frankly Split Enz would wipe the floor with them for ingenuity

  • Australia are two times world champs New Zealand are one. So your incorrect!

  • @sendtomick Don't forget the Springboks of South Africa (2 times World Champs as well). Hier komme die Bokkie!

  • This song is a great example of how the Enz developed their sound. They gradually moved away from their arty progressive roots to become more of a rock band. The changeover occurred when Judd left and Neil Finn joined. In all their guises they were a great band and great fun to watch on stage. Oh, and they also left us with some great music, some of the best ever from New Zealand

  • they had like 10 pre vid vidz!!! crazy! mtv bfore the need. jus so kooky.

  • These guys weren't even waiting for the 80's to get here. Still cool!

  • Sounds something like Squeeze! Glad that I discovered another great New Wave band!!

  • @peterkvideo

MTV used to play Split Enz during the early days. At least three of their videos were played on MTV on the day of its launched in August '81. Those clips were 'One Step Ahead', 'History Never Repeats' and 'I Hope I Never'.

Split Enz's biggest hit in the US was 'I Got You'. Singer Neil Finn later had international success with Crowded House ('Don't Dream It'sOver'). Molly Ringwald played a Split Enz-fan character in one of her pre-16 Candles movies (circa '82)

  • @nzoz1979 In New Zealand, Australia, and some parts of Europe they are one of the most successful bands of all time.

  • Super!!!! Typical New Wave spirit of late-70s-early 80s!!! I really LIKE Punk and New Wave music!!! Greetings from Punk and New Wave fan from Ukraine!!!!

  • I swear that this song is as addicting as Tim Finn's smile! :D

  • Amazing energy ! Excellent ! Thank you !!! :))

  • Neil has always so much power :)

  • The remixed version on the 2007 edition of True Colours is much better!

  • Music is about the only thing New Zealand beats Australia at.

  • @sendtomick oh do get off that high horse...

  • @sendtomick and Rugby Look at the history

  • This song isn't on my copy of Frenzy for some reason...

  • @Anon371 It was only a single. You can get it on the CD reissue of True Colors.

  • I found this hidden on a recent DVD release and fell in love!

  • Perfect Pop Perfection... reminds me of the Beatles

  • Ah, the 1970's. The decade good fashion sense forgot....

  • haha dude at 1:14 looks stoned :D

  • @camc23 Noel Crombie... and looks can be deceiving. The man is sharp. Tim Finn once said, "Noel is our leader, of that there is no doubt".

  • love this song !!!

  • Great Great Band !!!!! Great Video ! Thanks nzoz 1979

  • Neil wrote this song, its so different from Tim's. At least, i guess

  • A great Enz lost 45. Very catchy and love the video.

  • This is an awesome video! I can't stop watching. Thank you for posting!!

  • I love Neil's reaction to catching the beer, almost like he can't believe he did it. Great tune.

  • Freaking hilarious! The eyes at the end. Good song too.

  • nzoz you truly are a legend... this is a song I haven't heard in at the very least 15 years (why is this clip never to be found on Enz compliations?) so thankyou.

I've also got to thankyou for rediscovering Models, and therefore going to see them at the Espy last Friday, and thus deciding to move back to Melbourne.

    LEGEND, thankyou!

  • @TheFlyslip wow... you've decided to live in melbourne again, because of my nzoz channels? Cool! I'm changing people's lives!!! Kidding!

Thank you for the comment. This clip is actually from the Split Enz DVD that was released a few years ago.

  • @nzoz1979 LOL, yeah you're changing people's lives - for the better! *grin*

And this WAS on the DVD? Okay, it's official. I need my eyes tested. (As if that wasn't obvious enough at the Models show when I said to myself, "That's not Sean Kelly and Barton Price standing two metres away from me watching the support act..." - it was. Aaaagh!)

  • @TheFlyslip It's actually an Easter egg (hidden feature) on the DVD hence why it's hard to spot.

  • @nzoz1979 I must second what the Flyslip said there: nzoz you are a legend. Your channels are perfect for any homesick antipodean.

  • @HeadlandRoad thank you :)

  • @TheFlyslip The band have pretty much disowned the song which is a shame. It was a one-off single that met with no success so has become soemthing of a "lost 45".

  • @splitenzfreak1980

What a damn shame because it is EXCELLENT, a perfect piece of Pop!

  • Comment removed

  • @Missfantlady it's on the end of the remastered version of True Colours, not sure how available it is though :)

  • @Missfantlady Yeah it has been on CD, twice: the original mix was on a 1993 Split Enz compilation called "Oddz And Enz" which was only available as part of the now deleted gold box set "Split Enz 1972-1979"; more easily found is the 2006 remaster of the album "True Colours" which features a remix of the song as a bonus track.

  • Thanx for these vids... I had no idea these guys were so cool!

  • I cannot believe how young and crazy they are in this video! Too funny. I especially love Tim Finn's dancing- cracks me up!

  • great Kiwi band, loved their music when growing up in Cork, Ireland. Probably an influencing factor why I went eventually came to live in NZ!

  • did nirvana rip this song off too?

  • nzoz1979-thanks so much for posting this! One of my favs from the uber-awesome Enz!! I LOVE these boys! keep 'em coming! :-)

  • Saw this video on Tiswaz when i was 6 years old, it frightened the shite out of me....i've literally never been able to forget it....must mention that to neil finn next time i see him....

  • This video was also played on Tiswaz?

  • @arklowrockz same for me but it was sweet dreams when i was 5 or 6.one ove my first memories.

  • yeah tiswaz was pretty progressive now that i think about it

  • @arklowrockz ha ha same here.. but now i have seen the world.. and this Shit is not scary.. but I love Split eNZ.. and the World remains a scary and interesting place..

  • Where are the young musicians as daring, inventive and talented as those up here, in the living culture of today.. please???

  • You are SO RIGHT about that!

  • These guys are geniuses. Brilliant, and innovative work shown here. Both musically, and choreographically.

  • im addicted to this song!! the enz rock!

  • Split Enz is the best band that ever came from NZ. And I love most Kiwi rock stuff.

  • love the enz!!!!!!!! its been awesome searching through all these songs!!!!

  • another first for me to see. let me ask those of you in nz: if you were a band in nz in 1979, where would you go from here?!

solo acoustic folk guitar numbers by the sea with videos in sepia? or just retire?

  • Australia... and then the world if they don't fuck up their chances in American (i.e. Dragon)

  • So quirky and colorful. They were like NZ's answer to Squeeze. I love the Enz.

  • I've never seen this clip before! Thanks for uploading.

  • gosh, this is soooo good. love it.

  • nice like this one

  • Thanks it's refreshing to see and hear these guys.

  • Another fab Split Enz video that didn't make its way to America. NZOZ thanks for all these great videos you've uploaded.

  • no worries, glad you're enjoying them.

  • 2:06-2:11, Noel's a dead ringer for a young Brian Clough.

  • The tambourine guy is funny because he looks a little high. He's cute.

  • That's Noel. He use to design the costumes.

  • Yes, he's cute, and i like this song. It's simple, yet so catchy. It just has a simple charm to it.

  • theres those eyes again. pass me the drinks

  • the bass playing on this song is incredible and ballsy.

    great tune

  • The bass is outstandingly good....Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Thanks for posting. I think I've got this somewhere on vhs which I got from the fan club years ago.

  • So Beatlesque.... great!!!

  • Can't stop listening to this song, especially the chorus. ROCK ON, Neil! From 1:00-1:08 he's awesome. Almost punk-y.
