Their sometimes outlandish theatrical stage and video performances often draw attention away from just how good their songs were. While Phil Judd (in the early days) and the two Finn brothers were the most prolific songwriters, they could all write and arrange quality songs. Noel Crombie was the theatrical arranger for the shows, but later he took over as drummer for a time and proved suprisingly good.
@nancie72 Split Enz have never produced a video compilation that's included every single video. You won't see clips like 'She's Got Body', 'Crosswords' or 'Spellbound' on any of their commercially released compilations. I believe there is even a laser-disc (and VSH home video) of 'True Colours'. This clip is found on a DVD which is simply titled 'Split Enz'. In truth, the group were very prolific in the field of videos. Just keep looking on YouTube.
This song is a great example of how the Enz developed their sound. They gradually moved away from their arty progressive roots to become more of a rock band. The changeover occurred when Judd left and Neil Finn joined. In all their guises they were a great band and great fun to watch on stage. Oh, and they also left us with some great music, some of the best ever from New Zealand
MTV used to play Split Enz during the early days. At least three of their videos were played on MTV on the day of its launched in August '81. Those clips were 'One Step Ahead', 'History Never Repeats' and 'I Hope I Never'.
Split Enz's biggest hit in the US was 'I Got You'. Singer Neil Finn later had international success with Crowded House ('Don't Dream It'sOver'). Molly Ringwald played a Split Enz-fan character in one of her pre-16 Candles movies (circa '82)
Super!!!! Typical New Wave spirit of late-70s-early 80s!!! I really LIKE Punk and New Wave music!!! Greetings from Punk and New Wave fan from Ukraine!!!!
nzoz you truly are a legend... this is a song I haven't heard in at the very least 15 years (why is this clip never to be found on Enz compliations?) so thankyou.
I've also got to thankyou for rediscovering Models, and therefore going to see them at the Espy last Friday, and thus deciding to move back to Melbourne.
@nzoz1979 LOL, yeah you're changing people's lives - for the better! *grin*
And this WAS on the DVD? Okay, it's official. I need my eyes tested. (As if that wasn't obvious enough at the Models show when I said to myself, "That's not Sean Kelly and Barton Price standing two metres away from me watching the support act..." - it was. Aaaagh!)
@TheFlyslip The band have pretty much disowned the song which is a shame. It was a one-off single that met with no success so has become soemthing of a "lost 45".
@Missfantlady Yeah it has been on CD, twice: the original mix was on a 1993 Split Enz compilation called "Oddz And Enz" which was only available as part of the now deleted gold box set "Split Enz 1972-1979"; more easily found is the 2006 remaster of the album "True Colours" which features a remix of the song as a bonus track.
Saw this video on Tiswaz when i was 6 years old, it frightened the shite out of me....i've literally never been able to forget it....must mention that to neil finn next time i see him....
@arklowrockz ha ha same here.. but now i have seen the world.. and this Shit is not scary.. but I love Split eNZ.. and the World remains a scary and interesting place..
They were a great band, weren't they? I love these guys, and I love Crowded House, too. Such terrific songs, melodies, and harmonies.
