The best Americano is made by tamping extremely lightly (almost no weight -- just the weight of the tamp itself) allowing the water to run through fast (within 20 seconds). The makes a nice crema on top too, and not that watered-down flavor of having added hot water.
Americano is not a regular coffee. It's very strong, it's espresso with hot water. This is the real deal. For some reason in NYC where I live they think Americano is a regular watered down disgusting coffee in a huge cup. Shame.
