  • Awesome playing man! I like the tone you get too, it's a little brighter than other sticks I've heard. Seriously great skills. Thanks for posting!

  • Hi Nick, I take it you've actually listen to the performance and read my comment correctly? If you listen to the piece as he plays it in this video the tempo is all over the place. When he starts it's actually quite relaxed, but then loses it big time as the piece progresses. There is nothing ridiculous in what I say. Listen to what he plays, and listen to how the he jumps beats from one section to another. By all means do a chart you're own way, but make sure you get the basics nailed first!

  • How does he go up and down the neck w/ the bass line and not need to look at the fretboard?? :O Amazing!

  • Just great !!!!

    Lee in Idaho

  • wow this is real music!

  • Just heard this guy perform in Longview WA "Go Fourth" festival. WOW! amazing.

  • slowdown take 5 needs to be slow and tasteful

  • Yes! Love IT!

  • It sounds like a piano/guitar!

    Epic win!

  • this is killer, thumbs up this is one they need the 5star button back for

  • he's good, but his tempo is not solid.

  • @quinnjin2 It's called Rubato, literally "robbed" or "borrowed" time, where the player speeds up and slows down according to the perceived emotional needs of the piece.

  • Excellant!

    Colin Jenkinson

  • wow nice instrument i wanna learn that

  • well done man,groovy!

  • We can only dream of ower brain allowing us to do what hes doing.

  • love take five!!! absolutely insane!!!

  • not sure about this

  • Nice.

  • this is amazing, such a beautiful sound it produces

  • excellent!

  • I bet those things are a pain in the ass to tune!

  • Man, you need to try being a harpist! If you ever go to an orchestral concert, and arrive early, you'll see the poor harpist up there on her own twenty minutes before everyone else, tuning dozens and dozens of strings.

  • @JamesCamien

i went to watch a rehearsal when i was doing my work experience for the CBSO and i noticed that XD

  • Pretty impressive. The improv section was very well done.

  • this guy is a beast!!!

  • omg!!!

he's actualy playing bass and guitar at the same time!!!

    chapman is soooooooo cool

  • i could do that... i just dont want to.((lies i reallyreallyreally want to)

  • I wish I played the chapman stick. I play bass but i'm still jealous

  • you should be.

  • Well, I couldn't play a Stick but I do play bass guitar and have done for 20 years. This is just way too fast and lacks that real steady swing as a result. He's playing it at 'gig' speed :)

Get that tempo and swing nailed and the notes will sing more, especially in the bass line, they're not being held on long enough to hold down the groove.

  • @fourfingerfunk ridiculous comment. Jazz tunes and tempos are open to interpretation, that's the nature of the artform. Lacks swing? When tunes speed up, swing flattens out, but it's still there- I think the choice of Stick would be enough clue that this player isn't concerned with parroting Brubeck's 50-odd year old recording. You're entitled to your opinion- you can think it sucks- but telling this guy "the right way" to interpret a jazz chart and hold down a groove is ridiculous.

  • thats amazing man!!!

  • I taught this fellow to play the Chapman Stick and was quite a good student.

    Signed ~ Habitual Liar

  • i want to learn chapman stick so bad

  • holy crap

  • Hey man I've been playing music for over 5 years and that is nothing for musicians. I promise if anyone picked up a Chapman stick, for I don't know a year or even two , they would still be having a lot of trouble with their control. I'm just saying this instrument is like being two people, one hand wants to do one thing while the other another. Oh and Leo is a frekin' badass and I take my hat off to you Chapman and fellow stick players.

  • Yes, you need to watch your tempo. Otherwise impressive.

  • TEMPO, darling............

  • ???

  • His speed is inconsistent. Just saying.

  • WOW, one of the best arrangements I've heard yet.

  • WOW! What an amazing version of the great Dave Brubeck classic.

  • Amazing, but you are losing the "swing" by playing it way too fast IMO.

  • amazing!!!!

  • This is killer. I'm becoming a real fan of the Stick in Jazz. Well done!

  • Such great playing! thank you. This has got to be one of the hardest tunes to play alone and solo over. Much respect.

  • Feels too fast, but amazing none the less

  • Amazing!

Can someone please tell me what the purple "frets" (if indeed they are frets) signify?

I have noticed from other players that there are "big" fret sections as well as the usual small ones.

Fabulous! I want a Chapman Stick!!

  • The purple areas are fret markers placed at 4th intervals. I like the visibility of the linear inlays more than the dot inlays although I've owned many more Sticks with dot inlays.

  • 1337.

  • sounds Great!!! I learned a more basic version of Take 5, but this blows what I know away...

  • A good musician indeed-but that song is usually played at about half the speed he was playing it. I like it better slower.

  • just kidding, actually. that was amazing.

  • why do people have to be this good at music? all it does is make me feel bad about myself.

  • good job man

  • Excellent sounding instrumentalist!!! I saw him 12 Jan. 08 in Tubac, Arizona. Keep it up.

  • YOU ROCK! LEO GOSSELIN!
