With the filter on, it reminds me of the beginning synth sound of "Tom Sawyer" by Rush, which I know both Alex and Geddy used this a tremendous amount.
Reading about JPJ and his gear (reocities site), he did use them from the 1975 and afterwards. Early, he used Fender pedals, probably using them on the '73 tour.
Quite powerful on Since I've been loving you, a bit annoying at times, though.
Where are the Taurus IIIs? I have yet to see one as of 10/10. btw, $2000 is steep when arguable you could get some midi bass pedals plugged into a quality synth for less (like Dave Smith's MoPho)
The bass player in the band Menomena uses one of these in the song Weird, probably one of the only current bands that use one of these.. that I know of at least :P
You can add "Le orme" to the users. I saw Aldo Tagliapietra using this synth live at a concert. Ah man, it's really a fat sound. And has a sweet attach to!
is it just me, or is it just the fact that the more i see and hear the taurus 3, the more i prefer the taurus 1 instead? it much easier to personalize than the 3, in my opinion.
This is one of the three synths Moog initially planned to release as part of its Constellation ensemble in early 1974, together and separately.
The other two synths were keyboards: the Lyra monophonic synth, which never truly got off the ground (the closest thing to this was the Micromoog/Multimoog); and the Apollo, which became the Polymoog.
It can do higher octaves than just bass sounds, but I do want to point out that the really high "string" type sounds that you hear/see Alex and Geddy play on the Taurus pedals were actually from Oberheim synthesizers that they had connected to their Tauruses.
Thanx man...that's a bummer though... I wonder if the newer models have audio in and you can run your guitars through them? Anyway, thanx for getting back to me...Peace
To my ears the intro is a distorted hammond organ. It's definitely not just bass distortion. Unless the bass was multitracked to make up the chords and everything then fed through a leslie.
Frank Zappa had Taurus in his band as well, I even think he had two of them!! At least Tommy Mars (on of Zappa's keyboard players) says in an interview the he had "two sets of bass pedals". That interview can be found right here on YT, just search for "Tommy Mars interview".
I remember Mike Rutherford making the comment once that the reason he used these, is often times Genesis had no bass player...at least while they were basically a 3 man band.
Well you would probably run it through a PA system, and it would all depend on that. But It will definitely be as loud as all the other instruments. If this is what you're asking.
I was thinking that bass sounds carry better. When our neighbours complained about my brother's drumming they could hear the bass drum more, until he played with the doors and curtains shut. I saw your strange, wonderful thing on ebay for £2,500 and wanted it so much!
Where can I find a cheaper version of this synth pedal? Is there any digital version of this, with less options, just headphones and speaker output, maybe midi output?
beware...it's not going to sound the same as your genesis and rush albums. i own a minimoog voyager and roland midi foot pedals and the effect is nice but there never will be another taurus mark1. unfortunately the trend is always to manufacture things more cheaply instead of top quality. even bob moog more or less admitted this in his later years.
You have to remember though that the Taurus was originally conceptualized to be the Bass pedals for the Greatest synth on earth...THe Moog constellation. So this is just one componant of that system and was designed to be limited.
O RLY? Funny...the LAMBSBREAD preset on the Stage II operating system goes so low that Roland KC 550's can't pick up the bottom of the keyboard. BTW...I've got a Phatty as well. I've also got a Peavey KB/A 60, and the LP gets the windows shaking pretty good. Though the Taurus does kick some serious butt, it has no presets, aftertouch, velocity sensitivity, etc. I understand that's the point of owning one, it makes for a very expensive, unsuitable performer.
I'd have my small keyboard with all sorts of sounds (well, not that small. 5 octaves atleast) and my full piano size keyboard, with a bit more touch to it and then I'd take this, place it under my feet, go play in a band and be progressive. :D
Moog must bring this thing back into production, please! They're so in demand that $3000 is the price for one in this cond.

Amazing sound. The Police must've used this in "Don't Stand So Close To Me" in the intro, huh?

Good demo. I have always been fascinated with synthesisers and pedals. I want to buy a bass pedal in the near future!

It looks cool, thats for sure.. But to me
it sounds a lot like the feedback filter on
the jp8000.. maybe thats just the poor recording.

Has anyone sampled the sounds and created a library for public consumption ? It seems to be a very in demand product. I want to pretend I am Geddy, Alex, Rutherford ...ya know what I mean. I gotta get that sound!
