So critical... WASHINGTON — The repair needed to correct a flaw in the fuselage of Boeing Co's new 787 Dreamliner will take 10 to 14 days per plane, a top Boeing executive said. Speaking at an event hosted by Barclays Capital, Pat Shanahan, general manager of airplane programmes for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said it is not a complex repair, but it takes valuable time as the company races to ramp up production for the long-awaited carbon-composite airplane.
i hope it will actually be delivered on the date Boeing has promised. If it does that will be a first. And once they can deliver this jet, they can focus on stretching the 787 and making a 797 that is the 737's replacement.
Boeing found out later that if they want lightning protection for the most POWERFUL strikes they had to add so much metal, it would become almost as heavy as an all metal plane. They did a compromise and asked the FAA to lower the lightning safety standards for the fuel tank. A really super powerful lightning strike would be so rare I think they figured it's cheaper to just pay for a few extra plane crashes than increase the fuel consumption if more protective metal was added.
9th Nombember 2010: the day Smoke appeared in the cabin of a 787 during test flight near Laredo, Texas. Nov. 24, Boeing said it is "developing minor design changes to power distribution panels on the 787 and updates to the systems software that manages and protects power distribution on the airplane."
The repeated 787 delays are "a great disappointment," Shinichiro Ito, CEO of launch customer ANA. ANA is pressing Boeing to clarify whether further delays will occur.
Forensic evidence from the fire damage pinpoints Contactor CK2435505, one of two in the P100 panel, as the source of the ignition. The contactors are electrical control boxes that relay the power from the generators on the engine and distribute it as needed. They open circuits or close as power needs fluctuate. Contactor CK2435505, on top of the panel, was “melted”, while the lower contactor, CK2421501, suffered “extensive fire and smoke damage to backside.”
Fire from the contactor burned a hole between 12 and 15 in. long in the back of the P100 panel, and badly charred the adjacent fuselage insulation blanket material, which effectively did its job in preventing burn-through to the interior of the 787’s primary composite fuselage skin structure.
@arsenium666 Yeah, it's also the plane to us an all electrical instead of compressed air system. Which is partly the cause of the fire. I'm sure they'll get it straightened out, and yeah they'll lose some orders. That tends to happen when you build a radically new aircraft.
Is there a particular reason you're hating on Boeing, or you're just in Europe and think you might influence sales?
However according to the Boeing production line, they can't produce a 787 in just 3 Days. Remember, planes are not car and Airbus A380 does not take such a long time to built. Where do you get these information?
Air Berlin has made an enhancement to its order book which involves a reduction from 25 to 15 in the amount of Boeing 787 that had previously instructed the U.S. manufacturer, so you will save 1700 million (1.272 million euros)
As explained in a statement today, the airline has also decreased from ten to five the number of options to new units of this type of aircraft.
come on guys... arent you sick of A versus B fights all the time? Both planes are GREAT and both companies are kept on their toes to compete and only that way we get a better product... delays? shit happens... but at the end we will see great 787s and 350s gracing the skies... chill and lets enjoy aviation and keep politics aside
all I know is that when an airplane falls and 200+ people die no one is held accountable and no one goes to jail...its just like..oops it was an accident. Now if the engineers of this plane are willing to submit to life long accountability.
Well...after JAL filing for bankruptcy....you can take another 35 out of the 787 net orders...
And if you notice that the 787 weights 5-7 Tons in xcess of its design specs...wait for another cancellations record year in 2010...overcaming 2009 the first year for the 787 to have negative groth in terms of net orders.
Boeing may lose $271 million in government payments for satellite launch services if the Defense Contract Audit Agency finds that the company violated federal accounting rules.
Pentagon spokesman Navy Commander Darryn James said that the Defense Contract Audit Agency is currently reviewing whether or not Boeing "improperly billed" the Air Force in a 2006-2008 contract. The billing was for labor, management, quality control and support costs in the Delta IV rocket program.
Well done and congrads Captain. Mike Carriker and Captain. Randy Naville and thousands of great people there at Boeing who worked so hard to make this wonderful day a reality. The new era of flight travel has finally arrived thanks to you guys.
I wonder how long it will be before the first crash due to the slow dissociation from freeze thaw cycles endured between the time it spends at sea level and at 40k feet.
It's not just any plastic.. CFRP, is probably one of the most advanced composites in use today, especially in the aerospace industry.
IMO, the material is MUCH better suited than aluminum.. The thermal expansion coefficient for aluminum is about 2.3e-5 per degree C, depending on the alloy, and for carbon it's about 0.5e-5. So, for a -100 degree C temperture change, we get a thermal strain of about -2.3e-3 in the aluminum and 0.5e-3 in the carbon. Not to mention the fatigue life..
Boeing says the first flight of the 787 could come as early as Tuesday Dec. 15
Boeing said that the actual flight timing dependents on final internal reviews, taxi testing, FAA documentation and the weather
The "final gauntlet" testing on the 787 was completed verifying that fixes made to address a structural problem worked. Boeing earlier reinforced weak points near the area where the wings attach to the fuselage
Fancher says Boeing successfully completed analysis of a static test
I am flying on Icelandair in May 2010 - I saw on wikipedia they have 4 orders and I got my hopes up that 1 might be ready before my flight. But then I saw this video and hopes have sunk. Anyone know anything about it?
irbus and Boeing are set to hand over a combined record number of aircraft this year because the manufacturing lead time for aircraft, along with the threat of penalties in purchase contracts, protected delivery plans amid the global economic slump. Boeing and Airbus also juggled delivery slots, persuading some carriers to take planes earlier than planned. AIRBUS booked 123 net orders this year through October, surpassing BOEINGs 84.
2008 Airbus built 483 jets, while Boeing, hurt by a 2 months strike handed over just 375. BOEING is cutting production of its 777 starting in mid-2010, with a reduction to 5 a month from 7...
Boeing Co. (BA) is planning the first flight of its long-delayed 787 Dreamliner around Dec. 22, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.
"It is now scheduled to take to the sky on Dec. 22, give or take a couple of days. I don't think this will change much," the person told Dow Jones Newswires.
The plane is more than two years behind schedule and Boeing last quarter took a US$2.5 billion charge related to development costs associated with the program
It´s more toxic the Qerosene anyway..and burns faster...so if you´re able to count it, then Plastics will be the last thing you´ll have to worry in a plane crash...
Just check Spanair´s MD-83 crash in Madrid...people survived cause they fell in a river and that protected them from the qerosene flames...
This is no official year-end deadline...so don´t xpect any official excuse then.
Boeing had LIED its costumers during 2 Full Years...they´ll wait forever as they´ll ask for compensations, and actually they don´t need the planes yet as the Crisis restricted the Credit available for the purchases to be made:
TWO BIRDS-ONE SHOT
"Our plan is to fly by the end of the year and to deliver by the end of next year,": Marco Cavazzoni, general manager of final assembly at Boeing Charleston.
u know im a big fan but im very disappointed i think they need to hire the old engineers and project manager from the 747 era if u cause us a delay ur fired thats what thy need and what hurt them the mot is that other companies are contributing to it they should have done the body in the u.s.a so they know if it will fit or not well we just have t sit and wait until they tank its a shame they will lose it to scarbus
While the installation of the 787 wing fix continues, Boeing engineers have returned to the drawing board to redesign part of the reinforcement, FlightBlogger has learned.
Means: The fix didnt work well enough to be flown.
As a result, company and industry sources say the 2009 first flight target could be in jeopardy as engineers work to redesign the fix for four remaining wing stringers.
Means: Work began on the test flight line 787s before it became apparent the fix was inadequate.
Boeing declined to discuss the modifications, saying that the next opportunity for an update will come on October 21st during the companys third quarter earnings call. However, the company did reaffirm that 787 will fly by the end of the year.
Means: It wont fly more than once, if at all, before the end of the year.
The heads of Vietnam and Kenya's flag carriers are reconsidering their 787 Dreamliner orders because of delays in the program, according to new reports.
"We are not happy about the constant delays," Vietnam Airlines President and Chief Executive Pham Ngoc Minh told Reuters. "We expected to get our planes in 2009, then 2010, and now nobody can confirm to us which is the exact delivery date. I can be patient but it gives us a lot of headaches."
Meanwhile, Titus Naikuni, chief executive of Kenya Airways, said the 787 delays have led his company into negotiations with Airbus, according to a Business Daily Africa story. Kenya Airways has nine 787s on order.
"The delay in getting the Boeing 787 out into the market is affecting our plans," Naikuni said in the story. "We are talking to Airbus as a safeguard measure to ensure our expansion plan is not disrupted by the continued delay."
The first to threat Boeing in canceling the orders was All Nippon Airways of Japan. Second was LOT-Polish airlines ; since these airlines were supposed to be the first to have them. All Nippon airways wanted to buy 380 aircraft but abolished it while LOT will soon enough begin negotiations with airbus for unknown aircrafr for now.
i dont understand why everyone must be either boeing or airbus fans. i'm happy to have both since the added competition benefits US. I love the a380, excellent plane.. I also love the 777 and am sure will love the 787 as well as the a350.
This is a revolutionary plane.. the delay will be worth it.
How can you compare the A380 and the 787. The 787 is a FULLY COMPOSITE AIRLINER, that has never been done. It will take a lot of testing and understanding of the durability of the materials before the airplane will fly. Afterall you don't want a disaster soon after the plane is finished. Plus the A380 and 787 were made for completely different reasons. They have completely different markets, and completely different reasons, except for RANGE...
Boeing wanted to react on the A380 by a longer 747-X as a copy of the A380 - nobody ordered. Then they wanted to reply with the Sonic Cruiser as direct flights are more convenient - nobody ordered. Then they changed to the 787 to provide direct flights at reasonable costs - it sold like hell.
So, in a way the 787 is a reaction on the A380.
BTW: this 787 is not "fully composite", just around 50%. The A380 is 30% composite.
The old 7E7 is now the 787, I think it will be the future 7D7 ( 7 Delay 7)
Since the begining loved this airplane but now I can not say the same, I think the A350XWB will be better, the sales says the same and also the knowledge in building in diferent countries with carbon fiber, look the A300 and now the A380.
To bad for Boeing, love the 747-8 and the 777-300, but this is not good at all.
I love Boeing but this project its very bad, try to get a new airplane with a technology never been used before, to bad, the new Airbus A350XW already sales more than this one, hope Boeing will have it ready and succes in its project, its a very good airplane.
This is Boeing stupidity at its very best they paint this big big picture of how well things are going there plastic mentality of how they are going to assemble this plane like buying an erecter set from Popular Mechanics as I was a sub assy
in the everett area I have seen the company driven in the ground!
The Boeing 787 plane is a joke the reason they call it a Dreamliner is because it is exactly that a dream a pipe dream a tool used to gain invester confidence their so arogant to think that you can design a plane with technology that has never before been used in commercial aviation and outsource the work to venders all over the world as they would say their "global network" and have it together and flying is a dream I know I worked there for twenty years!
another Delay for the 787...and I´d lost the account...
Now they need to reenforce the wing attachment to the fuselage...
I guess Boeing is so lost that they won´t be able to make this non-plane (IT HASN´T YET LEFT THE GROUNG IN TWO FULL YEARS SINCE PREDICTED UNLIKE THE A380) flight until the first A350 XWD achieves it...
The 787 is late is because Boeing outsourced to countries all over the world to build it faster and cheaper, and unfortunately they failed. As for bankruptcy, Boeing is on the right track considering the same people than ran Douglas Airplanes into the ground are now managing Boeing.
Check Out my Nostradamus aspects in my latest Video...

The first ONE to anticipate the TRIPLE-F when heading to a new deadline: First Flight Failure.
SIXTH DELAY was anounced by Boeing yesterday ( well, if that means the self-censure on Boeing´s Website=no mention of any delay) and Costumers are now losing its remaining patience: Cancellations are coming, and Boeing is nowin US History as the most embarrasing showing ever performed by American Incompetency
well..it will fly REALLY soon, and bankruptcy? they have 866 orders. if anyone is going into bankruptcy it's airbus. thai might cancel their a380 orders, and many more will follow! Singapore and emirates have seen that it costs tooooo much to operate. 787 has already proved superior and it hasn't even flown yet!
Boeing continued to make progress toward the first flight of the 787 Delayliner, completing the first engine runs. The occasion marks the first all-electric start of a commercial jetliner engine on a twin-aisle commercial jetliner.
Engine runs began at 9:30 a.m. (21 May) and ended 40 minutes later.
Engine run test began with the Auxiliary Power System providing power to start the 2 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
Basic systems checks continued throughout the test. The engines were powered down and inspected and will be restarted following a technical review. The team completed a vibration check and monitored the shutdown logic to ensure it functioned as expected.
"We were very pleased with the performance on the engines during this test," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We will now get ready for our intermediate and final gauntlet tests."
Now on the flight line, ZA001 will undergo additional airplane power and systems tests as well as engine runs. After completing final systems checks and high-speed taxi tests, the airplane will be ready for first flight, which is on schedule for later this quarter.
The 787 Dreamliner has orders for 886 airplanes from 57 customers.
And in September 2008, the high-pressure test was completed on the static airframe. During that test, the airframe reached an internal pressure of 150 percent of the maximum levels expected to be seen in service - 14.9 lbs. per square inch.
Ground vibration testing, which measures the airplane's response to flutter, also concluded on the second flight-test airplane, designated ZA002, at the end of this week. All the necessary structural tests required prior to first flight now are complete.
All structural tests required on the static airframe prior to first flight also are complete. The final test occurred April 21 when the wing and trailing edges were subjected to their limit load - the highest loads expected to be seen in service. The load is about the same as the airplane experiencing 2.5 times the force of gravity.
On April 13, the leading edge of the wing was subjected to its limit load while the rest of the airplane was subjected to loads expected at cruise.
The 787 that will presumably fly later this quarter has moved to the flight line.
The 787 (ZA001) completed a series of tests including build verification tests, structures and systems integration tests, landing gear swings and factory gauntlet, which is the full simulation of the first flight using the actual airplane. The simulation tested all flight controls, hardware and software. It also included manual and automatic landings and a suite of subsequent ground tests.
Boeing decided it had ignore the engineers that said that it was too risky to use composites extensively. It's expensive and inferior to aluminum alloy.
Boeing Co. has reshuffled the customers for initial deliveries of its delayed 787 and set aside plans to send the first six aircraft into commercial use, according to a published report.
The move would see launch customer All Nippon Airways take 11 of the first 30 aircraft, while Chinese carriers appear to have slipped from the first deliveries scheduled for next year.
The first test flight is scheduled for June. The 787 is more than two years behind schedule.
Boeing are asking for a government bail out?Ha how ironic after all the accusations they made about airbus getting too much help from European governments, and Ryanair dont seem to be coming to Boeing's rescue like they did after 9/11
What company would want to help U.S. workers that join unions? Unions are destroying our country. Look at the UAW in the auto market as another example.
Boeing is just getting rid an inefficient system that will never work: Communism. The workers you mention were all apart of worker's unions.
Trade unions are responsible for providing better workplace conditions for workers, better pay, better holidays, etc. My union is also lobbying the Government to provide my company with more work - instead of supporting jobs abroad. Why is this such a bad thing?
I love American Corps crying for tax payers money...It seems they had lost faith in their liberal economic principles...
Then we have to remember Boeing asking the European Union to stop subsidizing Airbus...
How easy we forget...now the whole American Economy is breaking International Trade Laws...in the meantime, tax payers are losing their jobs, homes and future for their children...
All crisis have winners and losers: Bankers and Tax Payers respectively= Opression & Slavery
arsenium666. Boeing don't like Airbus' government loans, but they didn't complain when at least $700m was provided by the EU and Italian government, to build the dreamliner facility in southern Italy. I wonder why?!
I guess new planes today will be late entering service...the A380 and the 787...but you can't fault them since they're using new technologies in the plane...
Boeing are now axing 10000 jobs, yet they employ thousands of workers in other countries to build the 787. It doesn't bother me, as I'm not American - I just think it's ironic, since one of their main criticisms of the KC330 tanker was it's
foreign work content.
This just shows how patriotic they really are(n't)!
I am an American and I do agree with you, Boeing is a piece of shit. I take no pride in boeing. Everything in the US is outsourced and that is why our economy sucks right now, besides the real estate market fucking everything else up too. Our country is in a fucking mess
I lost all respect for Boeing when they launched their campaign of hatred, rumour and speculation against Airbus, aimed at turning the American public against the KC330. They assumed US tanker work belonged to them and nobody else was entitled to any.
The reality is very much different to what Boeing would like people to believe -
US workers and the US economy would gain more from the KC330 and the USAF would also benefit from superior and more modern equipment.
AmericanBrian. What's the general public opinion of Boeing in the US, since the events of the last few years (KC45, 787 foreign jobs/delays, etc)?
Have many Americans turned against Boeing recently? I suppose a lot will still support them since they're the 'home' company, but I bet they've upset plenty of people - by sending so much 787 work abroad.
I doubt they're very popular in Mobile, Alabama (Airbus KC45 production location).
Well to be honest, for all those that are aircraft enthusiast and for the people whom were laid off, their feelings about the company are not one with enthusiasm and pride....We can't believe they outsourced they plane to other countries, Japan for one! To be honest I know a couple people who were laid off and it's sad to see their stability go down the drain. I didn't know Airbus was in Alabama, if I understood you correctly? I thought they were all built in France?
If Airbus/ EADS had won the USAF KC45 program (they did win but Boeing appealed against the decision), the aircraft would be assembled in Mobile, Alabama. A new factory is planned which would create thousands of jobs. Also, as part of the deal, all A330 Freighters would be assembled there too (currently 72 orders).
That's what I meant when I said US workers had more to gain from Airbus winning the tanker competition.
They've shared development costs and risk with Japanese and European partners - which means they've also shared a lot of the 787's profits and jobs with them too.
As far as production is concerned, Eupopean and Japanese labour costs are NOT cheaper than US - they're more expensive.
How do I know this? Airbus has announced it needs to move some work from Europe to the US, to reduce it's production costs.
Building the 787 in the US would be more profitable for Boeing in the long term.
So what are you up to? you said if they didn't make 70% abroad, they wouldn't be firing millions of people, and now your trying to help boeing, are you against boeing or supporting boeing?
It should be pretty clear by now that I'm criticising Boeing for the way they treat their workers and for being hypocrites - they complained that the NG/EADS KC45 supported too many foreign jobs, causing the loss of US jobs. If they had any interest in supporting US workers they wouldn't have decided to build 70% of the dreamliner abroad.
Boeing [NYSE: BA] said today that employment at its Commercial Airplanes business unit is expected to decline by approximately 4,500 positions in 2009 as part of an effort to ensure competitiveness and control costs in the face of a weakening global economy.
The reduction will bring Commercial Airplanes' employment to approximately 63,500.
"We are taking prudent actions to make sure Boeing remains well positioned in today's difficult economic environment," said Scott Carson.
"We have made significant strides in recent years to achieve greater efficiency and productivity, but we still face challenges that we must address.
"We regret the disruption to those affected by this decision, but we believe that acting now will allow us to be in a financial position to adapt to market uncertainties, meet our customer commitments, continue investing in our current and future product lines, and protect our competitiveness in a fiercely competitive business environment."
Boeing today announced an updated schedule for its all-new 787 Dreamliner program that moves the commercial jet's first flight into the second quarter of 2009 and first delivery into the first quarter of 2010. The new schedule reflects the impact of disruption caused by the recent Machinists' strike along with the requirement to replace certain fasteners in early production airplanes.

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and its employees send their deep condolences to the families and friends of those who died on the Aeroflot-Nord 737-500 that crashed near Perm
Sunday morning (local time). Boeing stands ready to provide technical assistance to the investigation at the invitation of the Russian authorities.
Boeing could again be forced to delay production of its 787 Dreamliner if machinists belonging to its largest trade union vote on Wednesday to go on strike.
Another delay to that timetable would be a headache for the company, which is facing demands from customers for compensation. Boeing has already said it is assuming all 787 deliveries it expects to make next year will not generate profit because of compensation payments.
Then the DelayLiner should be forbidden to be sold on U.S.(once it manages to leave the ground), as well above 70% of the plane is being BUILD outside the country...isn´t it?
And...as far as I know...The KC-45 from Northrop Grumman-EADS will be assembled on U.S. Soil...you know where Alabama is?? 25,000 direct JOBS aren´t enough? and even more than 15.000 indirect jobs?
Maybe the European Union should avoid any U.S Miliary Plane to be sold on all european countries as well..isn´t it?

Boeing found out later that if they want lightning protection for the most POWERFUL strikes they had to add so much metal, it would become almost as heavy as an all metal plane. They did a compromise and asked the FAA to lower the lightning safety standards for the fuel tank. A really super powerful lightning strike would be so rare I think they figured it's cheaper to just pay for a few extra plane crashes than increase the fuel consumption if more protective metal was added.

The billing was for labor, management, quality control and support costs in the Delta IV rocket program.

awesome, plastic fusulage!
I wonder how long it will be before the first crash due to the slow dissociation from freeze thaw cycles endured between the time it spends at sea level and at 40k feet.
Pontiakos 2 years ago

Fancher says Boeing successfully completed analysis of a static test

irbus and Boeing are set to hand over a combined record number of aircraft this year because the manufacturing lead time for aircraft, along with the threat of penalties in purchase contracts, protected delivery plans amid the global economic slump. Boeing and Airbus also juggled delivery slots, persuading some carriers to take planes earlier than planned. AIRBUS booked 123 net orders this year through October, surpassing BOEINGs 84.

I can be patient but it gives us a lot of headaches."
arsenium666 2 years ago
Meanwhile, Titus Naikuni, chief executive of Kenya Airways, said the 787 delays have led his company into negotiations with Airbus, according to a Business Daily Africa story. Kenya Airways has nine 787s on order.
"The delay in getting the Boeing 787 out into the market is affecting our plans," Naikuni said in the story. "We are talking to Airbus as a safeguard measure to ensure our expansion plan is not disrupted by the continued delay."

Qantas, has been told the much-delayed airplane is still expected to fly this year.
Boeing in late June postponed the 787 Dreamliner's planned first flight, blaming stress problems where the wing and fueslage sections are joined.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told The Australian he was assured by Boeing last week that the first test flight would come by year-end.
The airline postponed delivery of 15 787-8s by four years and canceling orders for 15 of the larger 15 B787-9s.
arsenium666 2 years ago
How can you compare the A380 and the 787. The 787 is a FULLY COMPOSITE AIRLINER, that has never been done. It will take a lot of testing and understanding of the durability of the materials before the airplane will fly. Afterall you don't want a disaster soon after the plane is finished. Plus the A380 and 787 were made for completely different reasons. They have completely different markets, and completely different reasons, except for RANGE...

A380 First Flight: 25 April 2005= ON TIME
A380 First Delivery: 2007= 1,2 years behind schedule.
A380 Max Speed: 1 December 2005= Mach 0.96

Boeing wanted to react on the A380 by a longer 747-X as a copy of the A380 - nobody ordered. Then they wanted to reply with the Sonic Cruiser as direct flights are more convenient - nobody ordered. Then they changed to the 787 to provide direct flights at reasonable costs - it sold like hell.
So, in a way the 787 is a reaction on the A380.
BTW: this 787 is not "fully composite", just around 50%. The A380 is 30% composite.

Engine run test began with the Auxiliary Power System providing power to start the 2 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
arsenium666 2 years ago

The 787 Dreamliner has orders for 886 airplanes from 57 customers.
arsenium666 2 years ago
And in September 2008, the high-pressure test was completed on the static airframe. During that test, the airframe reached an internal pressure of 150 percent of the maximum levels expected to be seen in service - 14.9 lbs. per square inch.
Ground vibration testing, which measures the airplane's response to flutter, also concluded on the second flight-test airplane, designated ZA002, at the end of this week. All the necessary structural tests required prior to first flight now are complete.
arsenium666 2 years ago
All structural tests required on the static airframe prior to first flight also are complete. The final test occurred April 21 when the wing and trailing edges were subjected to their limit load - the highest loads expected to be seen in service. The load is about the same as the airplane experiencing 2.5 times the force of gravity.
On April 13, the leading edge of the wing was subjected to its limit load while the rest of the airplane was subjected to loads expected at cruise.
arsenium666 2 years ago
The 787 that will presumably fly later this quarter has moved to the flight line.
The 787 (ZA001) completed a series of tests including build verification tests, structures and systems integration tests, landing gear swings and factory gauntlet, which is the full simulation of the first flight using the actual airplane. The simulation tested all flight controls, hardware and software. It also included manual and automatic landings and a suite of subsequent ground tests.

What company would want to help U.S. workers that join unions? Unions are destroying our country. Look at the UAW in the auto market as another example.

I lost all respect for Boeing when they launched their campaign of hatred, rumour and speculation against Airbus, aimed at turning the American public against the KC330. They assumed US tanker work belonged to them and nobody else was entitled to any.
The reality is very much different to what Boeing would like people to believe -
US workers and the US economy would gain more from the KC330 and the USAF would also benefit from superior and more modern equipment.
tjp353 3 years ago
Ya, I totally agree with you! It's to bad that's not the case
AmericanBrian 3 years ago
AmericanBrian. What's the general public opinion of Boeing in the US, since the events of the last few years (KC45, 787 foreign jobs/delays, etc)?
Have many Americans turned against Boeing recently? I suppose a lot will still support them since they're the 'home' company, but I bet they've upset plenty of people - by sending so much 787 work abroad.
I doubt they're very popular in Mobile, Alabama (Airbus KC45 production location).
tjp353 3 years ago
Well to be honest, for all those that are aircraft enthusiast and for the people whom were laid off, their feelings about the company are not one with enthusiasm and pride....We can't believe they outsourced they plane to other countries, Japan for one! To be honest I know a couple people who were laid off and it's sad to see their stability go down the drain. I didn't know Airbus was in Alabama, if I understood you correctly? I thought they were all built in France?
AmericanBrian 3 years ago
If Airbus/ EADS had won the USAF KC45 program (they did win but Boeing appealed against the decision), the aircraft would be assembled in Mobile, Alabama. A new factory is planned which would create thousands of jobs. Also, as part of the deal, all A330 Freighters would be assembled there too (currently 72 orders).
That's what I meant when I said US workers had more to gain from Airbus winning the tanker competition.
tjp353 3 years ago
Seriously, I couldn't agrre with you more. Boeing was once a sense of pride in this country but to be honest not anymore.
AmericanBrian 3 years ago
Well, I guesse Boeing isn;t that wrong, I mean, if they dont fire them, the when they go Bankrupt, millions more will lose there jobs.
garlex134 3 years ago
garlex134. If they hadn't chosen to build 70% of the 787 abroad, they probably wouldn't be firing thousands of US workers right now.
tjp353 3 years ago
Well think of it, how much more would it cost to build it in the U.S? I thought so, thats exactly what I said.
garlex134 3 years ago
They've shared development costs and risk with Japanese and European partners - which means they've also shared a lot of the 787's profits and jobs with them too.
As far as production is concerned, Eupopean and Japanese labour costs are NOT cheaper than US - they're more expensive.
How do I know this? Airbus has announced it needs to move some work from Europe to the US, to reduce it's production costs.
Building the 787 in the US would be more profitable for Boeing in the long term.
tjp353 3 years ago
So what are you up to? you said if they didn't make 70% abroad, they wouldn't be firing millions of people, and now your trying to help boeing, are you against boeing or supporting boeing?
garlex134 3 years ago
It should be pretty clear by now that I'm criticising Boeing for the way they treat their workers and for being hypocrites - they complained that the NG/EADS KC45 supported too many foreign jobs, causing the loss of US jobs. If they had any interest in supporting US workers they wouldn't have decided to build 70% of the dreamliner abroad.
What makes you think that I'm 'helping' them?

I'm not pro-Boeing or pro-Airbus but Boeing had past crisis. Eventually they made it out.

And why do you have such a problem with the aircraft being delayed?
It's not a McDonalds Hamburger or new Carpeting in your house.
It's a God Damn entirely new aircraft made out of materials that they have never made aircraft out of before.
jizzmonger 3 years ago
No...yeah?
Amm...I might be wrong but the first Airliner to use composite materials was the AIRBUS A300 in the 70´s...
Err...isn´t 40% of the A380 made of new materials??? with more than 380 patents... wait for the A350 XWB with a 60% made of carbon fibre.
Maybe you´ll see it sooner than the DelayLiner...looking the way Boeing is going.
To add more spice to the neverending disaster...a STRIKE has stoped all US. Boeing sites..LOL.
What a Ridiculous Company.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner threatened by strike.

I think Boeing and Airbus are BOTH good companies.

They only reason they are using plastic is to save a bit of weight so they can squeeze another couple of rows of seats in there.
JasonJason210 3 years ago
These plastic parts are no good. Composites are very difficult to maintain - you can't see easily if it's seperating.
JasonJason210 3 years ago
So much for all those hypocritical americans praising the american made boeing. "70% of the plane and the engines are made in foreign countries..."
anelka09 3 years ago
The Plane uses Rolls-Royce and G.E engines so no, you are not correct.
jizzmonger 3 years ago
Then the DelayLiner should be forbidden to be sold on U.S.(once it manages to leave the ground), as well above 70% of the plane is being BUILD outside the country...isn´t it?
And...as far as I know...The KC-45 from Northrop Grumman-EADS will be assembled on U.S. Soil...you know where Alabama is?? 25,000 direct JOBS aren´t enough? and even more than 15.000 indirect jobs?
Maybe the European Union should avoid any U.S Miliary Plane to be sold on all european countries as well..isn´t it?
arsenium666 3 years ago
I agree.
If public is to be spent, it should only be spent with companies that are domestic to that country in which the tax money originates.
The EU buys Boeing aircraft because they want the best. It makes sense on that end.
And that is why the 787 is made "worldwide".
