Seeing how the big three is asking for a bailout, it makes no sense for the UAW to be picky during these times. Certain sacrafices have to be made, including wage cuts. This is why the bailout plan fell through, because union workers only go by the contracts and goes with what they feel they are worth which is understandable, but at who's expense? The Reps refused to support the plan because it has ZERO prospect of fixing the industry's fundamental problem which is that it costs them about $2,000 more to make a car than the foreign manufacturers. Until the costs are brought into synch (through reduced union wages/benefits), the Big 3 cannot compete.

Yes, but union contracts make it very difficult to fire people. There are specific guidelines as to who can be fired and for what reasons. This puts US automakers in a bad position compared to a foreign manufacturer. The best cars should come from the best brains.
