THAT is the problem, BUT Jason is AWESOME make no mistake or why don't you listen to songs like 39, Gone, Want, Us or Them, the Promise and many more? the drums KICK ASS.. it's not about HOW he drums it's his SOUND nowdays and I think that is due to the fact that Robert WANTS it that way, did you listen to Entreat Plus? The drums died literaly in comparison to Entreat. Stop blaming Jason it's not his fault.

Even though I prefer Boris, Jason is seriously not a bad drummer and I don't understand the hatred. I think that "classic" Cure purists have scapegoated him for the new albums not living up to their expectations. That would be Robert's fault, if anything.
AND PLEASE if anyone ever gets the chance, steal Jason's piccolo snare and roll it out into the highway where it belongs. It is NOT suited for any cure songs prior to 1994. It pats and pats and never hits with strength, and ruins songs like 100 years that need a snare with coils and lots of power.
Jason needs to hit the snare twice in the pause during Pictures Of You. The camera even focusses on his snare during trilogy and he still didn't do it. Thing is, Boris wrote long repeating sections of drums, not just a feel for the moment fill here or there. That should be respected by the new drummer, but isn't. the best jason songs are the ones where he follows boris' idea to orchestrate the drums, not just provide fills and keep the beat: examples: NY Trip, Truth Goodness & Beauty...
"It's not what you play but what you DON'T play"... a fact in the drum world... but Jason just seems not to know that...he always bashes the cymbals and plays that stupid hip-hop rhythm and the same drum fills... duh! Lawrence Tolhurst is a better musician than jason trooper... :)

There are a lot of song that have an easy drums, but famous for other reasons. For example "pictures of you" has for 8 minutes the same drums pattern: not difficult, no riff of toms, but it's one of the most popular cure's song. "Never" has the most difficult drums pattern in cure's history, but is not really famous.
About "The Walk" - Boris plays the same pattern for the Intro ( Toms, Toms, Hat, Hat), then changes in the verse (toms, toms, hat, hat, hat, hat, hat, hat), and continues the same pattern the whole song... no errors whatsoever. Regarding Six Different Ways - have you ever heard the album version of this song? The synths ( whose spelling you butchered in your response) are out of time with the drums... until ( as "In Orange") they resolve and become in time with the drums, not vice versa....

The drums makes no atmosphere: you can easily put a dark atmosphere in an "happy" drums pattern like "Close to me" (for example) or vice versa, an happy theme on pornigraphy.
it's not about erors that jason make.. it's about different energy.. boris play cleaner,harder,sopfisticated sound,that's all.. with him,the band is perfection.. and they are perfect without him,because they're still the cure:)
I gotta say as a drummer, Close to Me and Pictures of You are not hard to play anyway. That could be my 15 year old nephew for all anyone cares. My gripe with the Cure has actually been Robert for the last ten years or so. I tried to like Bloodflowers, I really did. But I don't think Robert sings with the same passion that he used to. I have many many Cure albums, but anything after Wild Mood Swings I just can't get into.
This Jason Vs Boris deal is so old. First of all, the point is that Boris gave soul to those Cure songs, not Jason. Jason simply learned the beat and plays along with no soul. Secondly, no one is perfect. However, The Cure had a sound that WAS partially shaped by the drumming (and yes, drums do give music ATMOSPHERE). Thirdly, Jason hasn't made an impact on me, and the fact of the matter is that he is a different type of drummer and a lot of Cure fans just happen NOT to like his style.
the intro of Six different ways by Boris is very bad like the syths at least in this version of the song. But the studio version is very nice. The firts time that I heard Six different ways (studio-version) I thinked the song like a dark song because the first seconds are relativily dark but quickly this song change the serious sound by the poppy sound, I was preffer this song enterely dark.....

I had no idea how great Boris was...until Jason. I thought it was just my hearing going bad until I found out others thought the same. Jason is a far better drummer than I could ever be; I can't tap my foot and pat my head at the same time. BUT, Jason's sound is like...well, a zombie. Sorry, Jason, if you're reading this, but it's true.
Coopers a good drummer...but come on man, you understand don't you? Last Dance, The Same Deep Water as You, Apart, Fascination Street...the guy was simpy amazing and in the same league with John Bonham.
Yeah, this video only increases my admiration to Boris, just remember that paterns he played live (like the Walk or Let`s go to Bed in Orange) and he create (like Last Dance or High ºoº). Thank You Jason's mom ;D
everyone makes mistakes, but .. come on Cure fans can hear the difference, we've been hearing Jason now for over a decade, and he hasn' t improved. A lot of it has to do with production values as well. Since WMS the production value has dropped dramatically, compared to the lush sound of Wish, Disintegration, KKK, so much more. Not only do they need a better drummer but David Allen needs to be brought back and keyboards too. Only song worth a damn on the last album was B Side, Down Under
Both have their own style but to me, Boris seems to give that extra mile. He seems to have a love for playing. Just watch him playing in the videos and live! he seems so enthustatic at the drums. He seems to really enjoy it . As to Jason, well, he just doesn't seem to project it. It's like "I'm here to play attitude" and he always looks nervous and insecure eventhough he has many things already recorded.
Have you watched Boris playing To wish impossible things? he plays ALL you hear. AMAZING!
The "many things already recorded" are not used because he can't play, but just for cover the hole of this line-up. If you was a drummer you must know that is not easy to play with things already recorded: you must have cordination and super rhythm

Ricordati che hanno suonato in due periodi diversi: Boris è un ottimo batterista, ma prima degli anni 90 sembrava suonasse una batteria finta e in piu aveva il "vizio" di infilarci il solito giro di tom. Di hanging garden esiste una versione splendida di triology, give me it una delle tante buttate via negli anni, push c'è la versione di berna ( senza i famosi loop).Bloodflowers e the Cure sono tecnicamente superiori a qualsiasi canzone di williams

Hi vendo89. Certainly Boris is not perfect but his patterns have that special thing that makes them enjoyable and fun to play and have moved many Cure fans to make covers and try to emulate him. Im one of them :) ... Now the 'error' in Six different Ways probably is because in those years (thanks God) they did not use a click track or backing tapes like they do today.

Boris Williams shines in ALL of the records with THE CURE. He is a truly percussionist and a real passionate drummer.
Jason "plays" over a wall of pre-recorded drum sounds and one can't tell who is playing: if the drum machine or him.
Just watch/hear 100 years where the pre-recorded tape or drum machine is PLAYING EVERYTHING! and jason is just playing over it. That is a shame for any drummer who consider him/herself a real drummer.
one has to remember, that when boris played this, he had only been in the band for a short while. And he covered his mistake brililantly. He is the cure, and jasons only good drumming was seen on the trilogy tapes.

Join the song "untitled" in a 1989 live version and for example an 2002 version and you will hear the difference! And the game: First Song "close to me" played by Jason, the second one "pictures of you" is Boris! It was easy.

Using drum machine doesn't mean that he can't play drums.1) 100 years was born with a drum machine 2) with the drum bass you have to play the "triplet".Do you know what does it means triplet??Gran-pa Boris and Andy never play correctly this triplet, they just play a simple octave. Only Jason ( NOT in the drum machine) uses the triplet with his drum bass.

I gotta say as a drummer, Close to Me and Pictures of You are not hard to play anyway. That could be my 15 year old nephew for all anyone cares. My gripe with the Cure has actually been Robert for the last ten years or so. I tried to like Bloodflowers, I really did. But I don't think Robert sings with the same passion that he used to. I have many many Cure albums, but anything after Wild Mood Swings I just can't get into.

This Jason Vs Boris deal is so old. First of all, the point is that Boris gave soul to those Cure songs, not Jason. Jason simply learned the beat and plays along with no soul. Secondly, no one is perfect. However, The Cure had a sound that WAS partially shaped by the drumming (and yes, drums do give music ATMOSPHERE). Thirdly, Jason hasn't made an impact on me, and the fact of the matter is that he is a different type of drummer and a lot of Cure fans just happen NOT to like his style.

the intro of Six different ways by Boris is very bad like the syths at least in this version of the song. But the studio version is very nice. The firts time that I heard Six different ways (studio-version) I thinked the song like a dark song because the first seconds are relativily dark but quickly this song change the serious sound by the poppy sound, I was preffer this song enterely dark.....

I had no idea how great Boris was...until Jason. I thought it was just my hearing going bad until I found out others thought the same. Jason is a far better drummer than I could ever be; I can't tap my foot and pat my head at the same time. BUT, Jason's sound is like...well, a zombie. everyone makes mistakes, but .. come on Cure fans can hear the difference, we've been hearing Jason now for over a decade, and he hasn' t improved. A lot of it has to do with production values as well. Since WMS the production value has dropped dramatically, compared to the lush sound of Wish, Disintegration, KKK, so much more. Not only do they need a better drummer but David Allen needs to be brought back and keyboards too. Only song worth a damn on the last album was B Side, Down Under

Both have their own style but to me, Boris seems to give that extra mile. He seems to have a love for playing. Just watch him playing in the videos and live! he seems so enthustatic at the drums. He seems to really enjoy it . As to Jason, well, he just doesn't seem to project it. It's like "I'm here to play attitude" and he always looks nervous and insecure eventhough he has many things already recorded.
Have you watched Boris playing To wish impossible things? he plays ALL you hear. AMAZING!

Ricordati che hanno suonato in due periodi diversi: Boris è un ottimo batterista, ma prima degli anni 90 sembrava suonasse una batteria finta e in piu aveva il "vizio" di infilarci il solito giro di tom. Di hanging garden esiste una versione splendida di triology, give me it una delle tante buttate via negli anni, push c'è la versione di berna ( senza i famosi loop).Bloodflowers e the Cure sono tecnicamente superiori a qualsiasi canzone di williams

Hi vendo89. Certainly Boris is not perfect but his patterns have that special thing that makes them enjoyable and fun to play and have moved many Cure fans to make covers and try to emulate him. Im one of them :) ... Now the 'error' in Six different Ways probably is because in those years (thanks God) they did not use a click track or backing tapes like they do today.

Boris Williams shines in ALL of the records with THE CURE. He is a truly percussionist and a real passionate drummer.
Jason "plays" over a wall of pre-recorded drum sounds and one can't tell who is playing: if the drum machine or him.
Just watch/hear 100 years where the pre-recorded tape or drum machine is PLAYING EVERYTHING! and jason is just playing over it. That is a shame for any drummer who consider him/herself a real drummer.

every other cure drummer played one hundred years better than Jason. He is using a drum machine!!!!! I Can't hear that song -he is ruining it - and many others. Join the song "untitled" in a 1989 live version and for example an 2002 version and you will hear the difference! And the game: First Song "close to me" played by Jason, the second one "pictures of you" is Boris! It was easy.

Using drum machine doesn't mean that he can't play drums.1) 100 years was born with a drum machine 2) with the drum bass you have to play the "triplet".Do you know what does it means triplet??Gran-pa Boris and Andy never play correctly this triplet, they just play a simple octave. Only Jason ( NOT in the drum machine) uses the triplet with his drum bass.

Boris Williams is a superb creative drummer and add to that his excellent sound live, then we have a perfect combination.
Jason is not that creative, his sound is the worst & weakest I've ever heard live and in studio in a professional band.

i dont understand what all the fussing is about. they are both great drummers. boris was very steady, almost flawless, but made mistakes just like any musician. as does jason, who is also very talented. and jason didnt kill the cure, it was smith's writing style, which seems to lack in creativity progressively since disentegration

of course Robert plays the drums and makes all the stupid mistakes, and looks like a crying baby all the time, maybe you are so confused, the IDIOT drummer; witch the name of drummer is too far big for him is JASON and NOT ROBERT, Boris has STYLE a nice one, Jason is FLAT all the time, causes headaches, ROBERT IS A GREAT MUSICIAN, SONG WRITER AND STILL HAVE A LOT OF CREATIVITY.

I'm totally with you. I read these postings and am blown away by so many people dissing on Jason Cooper. Does anyone think Robert Smith is so dumb that he'd keep a bad musician around for so long? It's insulting to not only Cooper but to Smith.
