Omyfreakinggosh....It's andy serkis!!!! He did such a superb performance that not ONCE did I think (while watching the show) "Look! It's Andy Serkis!" Great job, Serkis!
LOL I kind of knew the sneaky french looked like smeagol, good actors! but love Mathew Macfadyen, he makes period drama men being so sensitive and lovely....and Claire Foy was great as Little Amy Dorrit :) Great cast, nothing like the Brittains!
Serkis is unrecognizable as Rigaud. What an amazing performance. I knew he was a good actor, but this performance is truly great. An excellent production all the way round.
I love it, I think it's the best BBC mineseries ever. Claire Foy is a great actress, I'm glad they picked her. Andy Serkis' French accent is soo funny! I soo have to read the novel now.
Matthew Macfadyen melts my heart. I hope to be lucky enough to find a chap like him for myself someday. Claire Foyer is ahmazing! Love Andy Serkis's description of his character.
I don't really like Charles Dickens since I read Great Expectations and really had a difficult time getting through it. Yet, I like period pieces, so I watched Oliver Twist and Little Dorritt. I was so pleased to see Matthew MacFadyen in LD. LD is a much more appealing story, and I would have wanted to read this over GE in high school. Thanks for the interviews.
I dont know how you found GE difficult but as a novel Little Dorrit is just as complex as GE so I am not sure if you would have been happier with LD :)
hello from France, i think Andy Serkis as Rigaud is very good , i like his french accent, "qu'est ce qui passe ici si tard, compagnons de la marjolaine"...
I love BBC adaptations of Dickens(seen on PBS here in the States)...but "Little Dorritt" is by far the best yet. NOT ONE weak performance here. Serkis is diabolical as Rigaud, Marsan's Pancks was unexpectedly lovable (albeit an odd lovability), Macfadyen's Arthur C. was nothing short of heroic..but dear Claire Foy's Amy Dorritt, I'm not ashamed to say, moved me to tears throughout...it made you feel very protective of her... I love this entire cast and I will always remember them.
although he is kind of type-cast in his roles as scary people/creatures, andy serkis is still amazing (and terrifying) as rigaud. the whistling gets me everytime
the best thing about the BBC LITTLE DORRIT is, for me, Andy Serkis as Rigaud. He's jsut brilliant, so creepy and villainous, but I lvoe him. Fab series, loved evry minute of it
Heyy, just a quick question cos i havent read the book yet, do Arthur and Amy fall in love and get together or is there a twist of some kind? cos its drivin me NUTS! lol
No, they are not both poor at the end. Arthur's business partner returns from the Eastern Bloc where his invention has become a massive success and he attrributes his success to Arthur's support and encouragement and insists they are still partners.
Having committed their lives to each other 'as paupers' Amy and Arthur can now look forward to a good future together.
Not sugary sweet, just emotionally satisfying and beautifully acted by MacFadyen and Foy.
What I love about Matthew M is his calm, peaceful demeanor. Never seems to rush anything, very contemplative and insightful. Oh, and the soulful eyes. lol Must not forget those!
I actually would have to disagree with wessexuality. I think if you enjoyed the story of Little Dorrit on film, it woudl be a good Dickens book to start with. I know it's my favorite, and I first read it when I was about your age. Dickens is a unique writer, so you'll have to see what you think...but knowing the story beforehand should help. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Another great Dickens book is Our Mutual Friend...the BBC did that a few years back with Anna Friel. Highly Recommended!
fair enough, gamgee. LD was my second Dickens, but considering the age of the youtuber with the query and the nature of the question 'Is the book of "Little Dorrit" easy to read?', then I suspect the many various sub-plots weaving through each other, added with Dickens' fondness for language may put off a first timer to Boz. It is 700-odd pages long after all.
Yeah...I just looked at my complete Dickens and realized that Great Expectations and Oliver Twist are shorter ones, though David Copperfield is not. I'm pretty sure I was reading Little Dorrit at 14, but then I read Oliver Twist (and The Lord of the Rings) when I was nine...so I guess the reading history matters. That being said, I still think if you need easing into Dickens it's good to start with a story you know, rather than a short book...
...also I think Little Dorrit, being a fairly sentimental, and romance-focused Dickens book (more so than some of his others, I think) is particularly appealing to teenage girls. It certainly was to me! Finally, I think Dickens is a love it or hate it sort of thing...
gamgee: I have to disagree - politely, of course ;) - that LD is 'a fairly sentimental, and romance-focused Dickens book' that appeals to teen girls; Dickens' work Dombey and Son onwards take on a much darker and harsh tone than his earlier books.
LD and Bleak House in particular are steeped in social themes and the universal feeling of injustice; the meticulous use of language is reflected in Dickens' massive passages of description; a short chapter could be anything like 15 pages or so and would take at least an hour to complete.
The adaptations of LD (which do focus primarily on the romance) do not prepare you for just how much work you have to put into reading this wonderful book - a book that GB Shaw described as more seditious than Das Kapital'.
I mean a book that features money, greed, and bureaucracy gone mad; imprisonment in mind as well as body; filial and unrequited love; neglect, child abuse; poverty, cowardice, suicide; class etc. doesn't exactly lend itself to a teen girl audience.
This is why I ask for a reading history before recommend such lengthy tomes, as it could end up putting off someone reading the rest of the catalogue, if not for good. I think it's better for a beginner if there's a more linear narrative to follow like David Copperfield; Great Expectations, or Oliver Twist.
Hehe... Well, as I said, I am writing from my experience, and I can say that Little Dorrit is one of the books that my my little girl heart go pitter patter! :-P In my experience, you don't notice thet social criticism until you're old enough to get it. So, I thought the circumlocution office was fine, but when I was 14 I would not have understood what GBS said! I just loved the part where she comes to the jail... And rereading it recently showed me just how sentimental it is....
I'm not saying this from a study of the teenage mind. I'm just saying what I thought when I was 14, and why I believe I was so taken with Little Dorrit. (I used to go and read the ending repeatedly, too!) I was never particularly taken with any of the three books you mentioned.
When I was much younger, I saw parts of the 2006 Jane Eyre, and thought it looked good. Not very long ago, I read the book, but I'm sure it would of been better If I watched the whole series.
Since seeing Little Dorrit i'm obsessed and I find the book a lot easier to read.I suppose it depends how much you understand the drama and enjoyed it-Maybe i'm just to obsessed with the whole thing(i'm also mad about the characters)
I did not see the whole 2006 Jane Eyre, because the beginning was a travesty of the book. One of my professors who suffered through the whole thing said it didn't get any better. There is a Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester from the eighties, probably. You should watch that.
I was totally obsessed with Little Dorrit! I think I read it first when I was 14, but I read it three times in a row, and on the fourth my mom confiscated the book. :-) Dickens makes great characters!
Does anyone know what time and days the episodes are on? coz the first one was on Sunday and then the second one, which i just found out was on thursday at 8:30???
Looking forward to watching the lovely Claire Foy - hopefully she can follow in the footsteps of Ruth Wilson and Gemma Arterton and deliver a fabulous performance.
I'm very pleased that Dickens' Little Dorrit is getting a lot of recognition!
@loveblondes2much Claire Foy actually reminded me very much of Kristen Stewart.Something about the mouth and expressions...

What's your reading history, sophie? Have you read any of the classics, before? Have you read any Dickens, before?
I wouldn't recommend Little Dorrit for someone to get introduced to Dickens - try David Copperfield; Great Expectations, or Oliver Twist, first.
