hi i live in a basement in nyc with no lease.last month my landlord claim that the elecricity went up to 300 dollars.and ask me for 200.i pay 700$ a month and i been living here for about 5 month.i agve her a 100 extra personaly all i could give.for i am aready paying rent.she ask me fore more.im afraid when the times come she will not give back my security deposit money.she has a stove here and a storage room here as well(i have taken photos).and i caught them trespasing as well...what can i do
@carameloxx Hi - unfortunately we only deal with housing advice for residents of Scotland, as the legislation for Scotland and America is quite different. Perhaps there's a citizen's advice bureau or similar in your area that could help?
@carameloxx You have rights, excercise them, you can get free consultation with a lot of eviction Attorneys, if you don't use them, you can extract some info from them and roll with ti on your own, you gotta know the questions to ask, and it's free. If the Landlord has entered your apartment without an emergency situation, you can get rent abatement and even better, I am in the middle of this myself. Record the phone calls with them as well if you can, it will come in useful.

Then u need to tell her you have an agreement with her for 700 month (which is a lot by the way, & no1 uses 300 dollars of elecricity) this proves she lied. U need to talk to the NYC landlord & tenant board. Speak to the police. & u never ever take a place that doesn't give u a lease the lease is there to protect your and her rights!
@Lemon020202 I also think you have grounds to even sue her! She owes you back your money! Don't let her take advantage of you...start paying by cheques..so this way there is prove and right down on the cheque Rent-Re: Oct 2011 etc..and 700 a month! She is stealing from you!

We agree that prevention is the way forward and believe that an enforced landlord registration scheme would stop landlords like Leanne's from letting property.
Not good. Any chance on sharing with us, either via here or via a neutral body like Wikileaks, the identity of the landlord and the properties he lets out? I appreciate Shelter's attempts to provide solutions to this sort of event, but prevention is, as they say, better than cure, and people like you and me can only be protected from people like him if there's some way that we can learn about him before risking so much.
