The mood is exactly right, with Orsini and his buddies pretending that they are having a great time in spite of dark forebodings. This is just the sort of thing that Verdi had in mind when he wrote the banquet scene in Macbeth. However, Coote tends to forget that this is also a coloratura showpiece, like Lady Macbeth's brindisi; the irony of the piece actually depends on Orsini doing his best to sound giddy, and failing.
