I think this version sounds more like a cover song than a Rowland S Howard song. Seems like he's trying to sing it the way Nick Cave sang it. Rather than the way he would sing it... if that makes any sense
And I don't know why RS Howard ever associated himself with Tex jerkins. Can't stand the fucker. RS Howard stands alone as inspirational and more talented.
RIP Rowland, miss you so much. I used to see him in Fitzroy Street all the time as well walking very fast, I knew he was sick and I used to think he was walking so fast to ovoid the grim reaper , but he finally caught up with him. He is an IMMORTAL SOUL
Oh my god. I had no idea this happened. What a huge part of my young life the music he did with Lydia Lunch was and The Birthday Party. Love Nick but identified with Roland cos he was more of a clever moody kitty with more sensitivity.
Why do people say Fender Jaguars are only for "Surf rock"? I'm thinking to buy a 1966 reissue which is being sold in a shop a bit far from my house and i found it isn't a guitar for beginners unless you are a Cobain oriented. Rowland played it anf his Jaguar sounded similar a Strat or a Les Paul or a SG. RIP Rowland.
Oh this always happens... I get into someone's art they pass away soon after. George Carlin, Johnny Cash, Charles Bukowski, John Hughes and now Rowland S Howard.
They were all great, and we lost 'em all last decade. RIP all of you; thanks for making my life a little brighter. You will be missed.
@GEEMELLOW: definitely one of the best song writers ever, without a doubt. His work in all his bands rings with both genius and humility. So sad that he's gone.
Thanks for the memories of the fresh faced and intense young man driving the guitar of the Boys Next Door in late 70's. Condolences to family and friends. - Rob H
Just found out about the passing of Rowland. Very sad news. Saw him late October in Sydney - and he was great. He did look sick in comparison to recently (saw him earlier in the yr at Nick Cave's ATP) - but did not hinder his guitar playing & songs. This is a great performance of a song which might have been his albatross - but he should have been given a Victorian Medal for his solo work, These Immortal Souls, Crime & the City Solution, Birthday Party & his records w/ Lydia Lunch & Nikki Sudden
Thanks for the heads up on the book. It is very sad that this book is difficult to track down. Do you know where it`s available? I`ve googled but to no luck. Cheers
I could not agree with you more! I find it a little funny how this song gives me a slight case of the shivers every time I hear it, especially when Howard sings it. Also, he looks (physically) a lot like my old friend Gabe who was quite talented on the guitar as well.
