I have done nearly the same thing, staging a small lightsaber duel with my friend on the front lawn of our school. We were stopped and made to put away the lightsabers because they 'could be used as weapons.' Technically, anything could be used as weapons, and it wasn't like we were going to beat anyone to death with plastic light-up cylinders. I'm just sayin'.
This is a ridiculous over-reaction by the principal, the whole "Someone could have gotten hurt," nonsense line just hammers home the point that he's grasping at straws to justify his decision.
@geekyandgeekier I think the graduation punishment is excessive, but you don't address what would happen if those kids, or other kids were hurt, as a result. The parents would ask why the principal and teachers weren't controlling the situation, and then they would sue. These "kids" are adults or close to being adult age if they're about to graduate, and they should know better.
Just one more example of the contradictions in closed minded education. The system "teaches" students to "think for themselves", but once they decide to think "out side of the box" (which is infinitely small in most areas), they are immediately punished as an example to others.

As stupid as this thing is its almost not even worth it to argue. The principal is obviously an idiot who overreacted. Yeah, maybe somebody could have gotten hurt but the fact is: Nobody Did. Kids are dumb and they do dumb things, at least they didn't do some sort of Jedi Columbine.

Could have gotten hurt, could have started something different... The key word here is could, nobody actually got hurt and everyone enjoyed it the "fight", and what could two seniors having a lightsaber duel possibly become other than a joke? It really is bullshit that people punish for what COULD have happened instead of what actually DID happen. Not to mention these are children's toys they were using. I highly doubt anyone would have gotten hurt with something equivalent to a wiffle bat.

I have done nearly the same thing, staging a small lightsaber duel with my friend on the front lawn of our school. We were stopped and made to put away the lightsabers because they 'could be used as weapons.' Technically, anything could be used as weapons, and it wasn't like we were going to beat anyone to death with plastic light-up cylinders. I'm just sayin'.

@geekyandgeekier I think the graduation punishment is excessive, but you don't address what would happen if those kids, or other kids were hurt, as a result. The parents would ask why the principal and teachers weren't controlling the situation, and then they would sue. These "kids" are adults or close to being adult age if they're about to graduate, and they should know better.

Just one more example of the contradictions in closed minded education. The system "teaches" students to "think for themselves", but once they decide to think "out side of the box" (which is infinitely small in most areas), they are immediately punished as an example to others.

@ChristOnFire666 That may be so, but, honestly, if you're the principal -- and you have a bunch of parents who don't raise their kids properly who will blame you when things go wrong -- what do you do? As I've stated elsewhere that I think keeping them from graduation is too much, but they should suspend them, or make them clean up the lunch tables.

@TsugaruClan Clean the lunch tables, yes. That's a perfectly acceptable punishment in my opinion. But again, suspension? There's a pretty big gap between cleaning tables and a 10 day suspension. Hell, I'd say make them clean the tables for 10 days before you do anything else.

@TsugaruClan Actually it sounds like something a geek would do (at any age!). My friends and I were considering doing something like this at our college for an April Fool's prank. The 10 day suspension is ridiculous considering nobody got hurt (I was once suspended for 3 days after getting into a fight with someone, and they DID get hurt). And the added insult to not let them walk, that's just ludicrous and this principal should be fired.
