Better than the one on SYW, but at the same time, a different flare. You can feel the anger in this one, and in the SYW version, it's more somber and a sort of acceptance tone. Anyways, does anyone know the full lyrics for this one..? When Stevie starts raging in get's a little hazy, haha. Thanks for the upload.
Great rarity. Still like the final version on Say You Will. That said, this is edgy and might've worked better on Tusk (maybe right after Sisters of the Moon) or even Tango in the Night (near the end of side one), but would've felt out of place IMO on Mirage.
I think this would've sounded great as a part of the The Other Side of the Mirror. Its watered-down counterpart certainly doesn't belong on Say You Will. There's so much fire in this song. I love it.
This is so much more Effective and Kick-Ass than the Say You Will version. She Really gets the point across here. Awesome! I have suspected that Lindsey sometimes has too much control on the albums. Maybe next time, he should back off somewhat.
@TheXander360 Maybe it would be better on Mirage. And I think that because on Mirage she would have two "darker" songs, Smile At You and Straight Back, and two lighter, happier songs, Gypsy and That's Alright. While The Wild Heart is the perfection that shouldn't be touched. That album is just so perfect just the way it is.
Well, I changed my mind a bit. I think it's a very strong, dramatic duet between Stevie's voice and Lindsey's guitar and it's a big shame that it wasn't included on the Mirage album. I must admit I consider Lindsey as the the band's main vocalist (apart from being the guitarplayer, arranger, composer, producer) and mostly take Stevie's singing for granted, but here she definitely delivers the goods.
This is a great version, but it doesn't fit the feel of Say You Will, or how Stevie's voice ended up developing from 1982 to 2003.
Lindsay made the right call in this case, and honestly he usually does. I also think he didn't put it on Mirage because again, it didn't fit the album.
I agree there could be something to Lindsey wanting to "tame" her songs, as after all, theirs was a very competitive relationship, which was factor in their breakup and constant friction afterwards. It was his way of controlling her after he lost her, so to speak. I could be wrong. I love 'em both, and am just glad we have YouTube and all these bootlegs and rarities! Thanks a lot!
Yeah, but there could be something to Lindsey wanting to "tame" her songs, as after all, theirs was a very competitive relationship, which was factor in their breakup and constant friction afterwards. @joesnelson It could be that she had many vocal problems from 'singing the sh*t out of Rhiannon' - which shredded her vocal chords according to Mick. Even now she is careful how she sings certain songs - including Rhiannon.
I like this version, but i miss the awesome Say You Will version chorus.
Oh, and, People tend to forget we're talking about a band here, not Stevie VS Lindsey. I'm sure they had good reasons not to put this on Mirage. Plus, the Straight Back-Gypsy-That's Alright combination is already great.
Although her singing is more expressive and passionate here than in the Say You Will version - hardly Lindsey's fault I guess, - I prefer the instrumentation on Say You Will. It's far more dangerously haunting in its laid-back aggression. And although Buckingham's electric guitar playing has a highly thrilling 'live' feel to it on this demo, I can't help preferring his acoustic solo on the later recording.
I also can't help thinking she's directing the lyrics now at him...
This is my favorite version of the song. The album version was done close to 30 years after the song was written; Stevie may have mellowed on it, too. But, even tho Say You Will's take is pretty, it can't match the demo's power.
Why does he get to be wild and weird but won't let Stevie. This is a powerful song.
Why? Because he's an ass. Simple as that. This is the severely watered-down version of this very angry, piercing song. I am supposing it probably scared Lindsay in its true, raw form, which is why it was so watered-down. Not fair. This is a great song when listened to raw.
I love it when Fleetwood Mac takes on a darker, angrier, edgier tone (e.g., "Gold Dust Woman," "I'm So Afraid," some of the live performances of "The Chain"). And this is no exception.
This is why I've always loved Stevie Nicks. This is one powerful woman. I could hear that when I first heard her voice, in the sweet and beautiful version of Rhiannon, back in 1976. From that moment on - I vowed to be a strong, independent woman just like I knew she was. Thank you for sharing this!!!!
So this was recorded around the time of the Mirage album then? This is perfect for me right now because I just got burned (to a crisp). Next time I decide to trust someone with a p***s besides my own son someone dump a large bucket of ice water on me please.!!!!

Oh Hell yes!!! I love the intensity behind this. I've heard this is about Don Henley, and from also from what I hear their relationship was pretty tumultous as well.

@joesnelson Itscalled jealousy.. He was shocked in the early 70's that Stevie became the superstar.. He had always thought he was the superstar and that he carried her along.. Even Stevie will say.. Lindsey never took her seriously. I have heard her say Lindsey thought her music was insignificant to his talent..
@joesnelson sooooooo true!! I hate the lyrics he wrote in The Ledge
"Buy another fixture

The whole song is so mean to Stevie!! I LOVE that song but it I feel like it's directly to Stevie and shows some of his jealousy and other jerky ways he is known for!
@junglejezzabel Well true, I've often described Tusk as business as usual for Stevie and Chris and then Lindsey uses it to basically sh*t on Stevie. I do notice too that a lot of her aggressive songs were taken off albums (Silver Springs) or never quite made it (Say You Will, Planets of the Universe, etc). Not sure that's enough to merit a conspiracy...
@joesnelson who said it was his fault the song didnt get released at the time it was made. everybody in the group were genious' but buckingham is responsible pretty much for all the production. but i agree this song should have been released a long time ago. i think they were going for a modern day sound on the say you will ablum, i dont like that version as much.
@joesnelson Stevie said herself that she didn't want the song presented the way it was on the decades old demo. Fans like to blame Lindsey for everything because Stevie always does. In this case she took it upon herself to say she isn't angry anymore so she wanted the song to reflect a non angry tone. Not her exact words but the gist of her comments is that making the song less angry was HER decision.
Regarding your video description (meaning the profile owner),does anyone that is REALLY a Stevie FAN honestly think she's a prissy little "pop princess"? Seriously...? If anyone actually thought that I would immediately assume they are a very very very NEW fan, first of all, and secondly, I would think they didn't know the difference between pop and rock, and then lastly, I would think they somehow missed that she has a very brilliant personality, full of emotion. That's what makes a great poet.
hey I agree with clampandbush this is much better, although the SYW isn't bad. Her harder and angrier songs are definetly bad, maybe with the exception of beautiful child! she has always been and always will be the star of fleetwood mac!
Oh yes he is....I read once too where he would go out and sing off key on purpose to mess up the band....He is sooo full of himself....I never liked his music really...there are a few Fleetwood Mac songs with him on lead that are ok...but...Stevie is the real star...and He knows it.
I think both version - this angry demo & SYW are good. It's a pity this demo wasn't released originally. Stevie Nicks voice has lost a lot of the subltety that she had when younger. I don't think she can recreate these emotional nuances in her voice without belting out the whole song, as is the way she mostly sings today. Hence, I really enjoy her more restrained version as I think it's a fine take on what she can do nom.
This is terrible. I'm sure Stevie would frown apon all this bickering and arguing. Everyone has their own oppinion, if you don't agree with others, just ignore it. Why say such mean words over this? Truth is the members of Fleetwood Mac made it together as one, there wouldn't have been a Fleetwood Mac as you know it without both Lindsey and Stevie. And the other members. There might've been some hard times, but those times have passed. They got over it. Its time you all got over it too,
This song rocks and is classic Fleetwood Mac. They never should never have changed it. Hope they release this version, it's a shame they didn't get it right. Her voice, his guitar, together are great.
Johnnymagraret says: Who said Lindsey is the bigger star? NOT ME. But the man is an incredible guitar player and producer. Even Stevie would disagree with you despite her past problems with him.
You know nothing about me. The FACT is that Stevie would never have made it without him. FM did NOT want her! But he would not join wihtout her. She was just the guitarists gf. But she arose to the occasion and did an incredible job. But she cannot do an album without a producer. She can't even really play an instrument. Lindsey, however, can.
i bet they are very happy for taking her in b/c i doubt FM would've gotten as far as they did without her and her solo career which had nothing to do with him was very succesful and a hell of a lot better than his own. she wrote the original track (skeleton) for her own songs which were later produced into some of FM biggest hits so even the ideas came through her. lindsey is not as special as you seem to think and this is really goodbye think whatever makes you happy. :)
moonflower, I'm one of the biggest Stevie fans there is. But you cannot say Lindsey was not part of her success. It is a fact. Stevie it appears by what I've read seemed to have found it worth putting up with his abusive behavior because he was such an incredible guitar player and she new musically they were a good team. She alone would not have made it and has said so. Personally if it were me - I would never have endured the abuse. That's how bad she wanted to make it in the business.
@johnnymargaret She put up with his abusive behavior because she had low self esteem during their relationship not because she wanted to make it in the business....
Umm excuse me..but her "instrument: which you put so much stock into is called vocals...So yeah she has an instrument...and last I looked she had more record sales then all of the Mac combined and oh yeah I love Lindsey so I'm not a hater....fleetwood rocks...
he might be apart of her success but she over took him shes perfect and no matter what she done she always done it better such as her first solo album it towerd over lindseys first solo album like i love them both they both made fm and they both make each other but stevie she blows minds
I can never figure out which version of the demos of this song I like better ( I would have loved the SYW verision if I had never heard the power of these first)
Great post. I can't understand how such a great version of a song gets buried.
I think the guitar work in the version posted by nicksaddict07 is a little better but the vocals there are louder and occasionally overwhelm the guitar, especially near the end.
Poor quality sound on this! The angry photos are okay, but please be nice to my favorite singer songwriter in the whole world.I frown on any NEGATIVITY! LOL dj/DEB
Love this version! Loved it 12 months ago when it was posted by SortaSavageLike and I'm still loving it 12 months later. By the way have you completely lost it rogerwaterhasgonemad cause you have totally lost me. How the heck did you come to that conclusion. Yeah like Lindsey is still touring...okie dokie.
No...she supported him..she worked while he laid around playing guitar...she has far outsold lindsey....she has far outshined him...and why wouldn't she...he is awful on his own..thank God Fleetwood Mac took him back...he needs them!
ugh. fleetwood mac formed back because of him.he called everone after working with mic and john. please know your facts before you state comments like you just did. And he has made more money off the fleetwood mac albums. Also more songs that he has contriubuted to have been bigger hits. and he does not sounds like a sheep compared to her also.
LOL...I think it is you who needs to check the facts...They reunited for Bill Clinton's big night....and it was not because of him that they got back together...It was a joint decision. His songs were not bigger hits..that is a joke in itself. He sucks on his own. He was a pain in the ass with the band that is why they broke up because he was not a professional musician. Funny how he tries to sound like her at times...she is a legend...he is forgetable..sorry.
Lindsey was a producer at heart - he liked to experiment. He wasn't so much interested in making actual 'hits'. And no matter what, tome, he was the BEST producer for Stevies' songs than anyone else.
I seriously doubt I am the only person who LOVES those songs. He also had hits within FM. Big Love is a good example
Go your own way' and 'Oh Diane' off the mirage album were hits. He was the driving creative force behind Fleetwood Mac and they even gave special thanks from the band to him on albums. No arguement here - I know what I'm talking about. And when he left it took a lot of people to fill his shoes and the fans did not like the new members. End of.
you are such a cool person! gotta love ya! i love how you put these "lindsey lovers" (in other words, assholes) in their places! you have my vote FOREVER!-kat
I just cannot believe that anyone thinks that he is a bigger star than Stevie...they are sooo dissolutional...crazy people. Stevie is a legend...she will always be remembered as one of the greatest females of Rock n Roll...Lindsey...well...he will be forgoten in time.

In this case she took it upon herself to say she isn't angry anymore so she wanted the song to reflect a non angry tone. Not her exact words but the gist of her comments is that making the song less angry was HER decision.

@joesnelson i agree! this song (like "sisters of the moon ") is a typycal stevie song, shesings with all her heart!!!

Oh yes he is....I read once too where he would go out and sing off key on purpose to mess up the band....He is sooo full of himself....I never liked his music really...there are a few Fleetwood Mac songs with him on lead that are ok...but...Stevie is the real star...and He knows it.
nytbrd 2 years ago
for some reason i like her angry songs a lot more. xept for storms, thats amazing
brilliantone909 2 years ago

Her voice, his guitar, together are great.
oceangroveNJgirl 3 years ago
I really this, it just shows she is a songwriter and singer who puts all her passion into it....

The Mac missed out on a hit when they didn't record this and release it the way it should have been.

Johnnymagraret says: Who said Lindsey is the bigger star? NOT ME. But the man is an incredible guitar player and producer. Even Stevie would disagree with you despite her past problems with him.
johnnymargaret 3 years ago
the facts still that on the records is other producers are credited and is either on video documentarys
and none of those songs were really big hits except "go your own way"
Lindsey left FM and the TITN tour was still a big hit and it was him who called fm to rejoin
i like Lindsey but the truth is still that
you're just a really big fan who finds the facts hard to except.
moonflower0924 3 years ago
You know nothing about me. The FACT is that Stevie would never have made it without him. FM did NOT want her! But he would not join wihtout her. She was just the guitarists gf. But she arose to the occasion and did an incredible job. But she cannot do an album without a producer. She can't even really play an instrument. Lindsey, however, can.
johnnymargaret 3 years ago
i bet they are very happy for taking her in b/c i doubt FM would've gotten as far as they did without her and her solo career which had nothing to do with him was very succesful and a hell of a lot better than his own. she wrote the original track (skeleton) for her own songs which were later produced into some of FM biggest hits so even the ideas came through her. lindsey is not as special as you seem to think and this is really goodbye think whatever makes you happy. :)
moonflower0924 3 years ago
moonflower, I'm one of the biggest Stevie fans there is. That's how bad she wanted to make it in the business.
johnnymargaret 3 years ago 2
Exactly why she stayed i dont know
but i think it has to do with the fact
that per her interviews she still loved lindsey very much. but i know she didnt them that's obvious.
will, have to wait for her bio.
moonflower0924 3 years ago
@johnnymargaret She put up with his abusive behavior because she had low self esteem during their relationship not because she wanted to make it in the business....
Scarlettcrzy 1 year ago
Umm excuse me..but her "instrument: which you put so much stock into is called vocals...So yeah she has an instrument...and last I looked she had more record sales then all of the Mac combined and oh yeah I love Lindsey so I'm not a hater....fleetwood rocks...
newenglander1 3 years ago
he might be apart of her success but she over took him shes perfect and no matter what she done she always done it better such as her first solo album it towerd over lindseys first solo album like i love them both they both made fm and they both make each other but stevie she blows minds

Great post. I can't understand how such a great version of a song gets buried.
I think the guitar work in the version posted by nicksaddict07 is a little better but the vocals there are louder and occasionally overwhelm the guitar, especially near the end.

ugh. fleetwood mac formed back because of him.he called everone after working with mic and john. please know your facts before you state comments like you just did. And he has made more money off the fleetwood mac albums. Also more songs that he has contriubuted to have been bigger hits. and he does not sounds like a sheep compared to her also.
rogerwaterhasgonemad 3 years ago
LOL...I think it is you who needs to check the facts...They reunited for Bill Clinton's big night....and it was not because of him that they got back together...It was a joint decision. His songs were not bigger hits..that is a joke in itself. He sucks on his own. He was a pain in the ass with the band that is why they broke up because he was not a professional musician. Funny how he tries to sound like her at times...she is a legend...he is forgetable..sorry.
nytbrd 3 years ago 2
That was a one off gig.
in 92
they didnt reunite till 1997
becuase of lindsey.
and im not a lindsey lover but i give credit were it is due.
lindsey got sober on his own.
remember that he didnt need no rehab

Lindsey was a producer at heart - he liked to experiment. He wasn't so much interested in making actual 'hits'. And no matter what, tome, he was the BEST producer for Stevies' songs than anyone else.
johnnymargaret 3 years ago
and the songs were collaborated on together along with people like Caillat
that's why LB doesnt have any hits of his own. of course stevie only credited LB in every interview cause she was still crazy inlove with him.
moonflower0924 3 years ago
NOt true Lindsey does have hits of his own 'Trouble' and 'Go Insane'
johnnymargaret 3 years ago
those are two of his better songs
but hardly hits and i'm not going to argue facts cause is hard for some people to accept. buh-bye.
moonflower0924 3 years ago
I seriously doubt I am the only person who LOVES those songs. He also had hits within FM. Big Love is a good example
Go your own way' and 'Oh Diane' off the mirage album were hits. He was the driving creative force behind Fleetwood Mac and they even gave special thanks from the band to him on albums. No arguement here - I know what I'm talking about. And when he left it took a lot of people to fill his shoes and the fans did not like the new members. End of.
