I say this is the exercise music people need...cuzzzz you spos'd to dance, shake, move FUNKY..Work It...whewhooo I am a hippie loving Jesus..Thank You Lord, for this day!
Used to hear this all the time in a jazz-funk pub I used to go to near Wycombe (west of london) in 1982/1983 - it was already nearly 10 years old then! - used to be put on the jukebox about 5 times every night.I can smell the Fosters and Grolsch now...
I REMEMBER STANDING ON THE BLOCK IN NY CITY LISTENING TO THIS WHEN IT CAME ON OUT SIDE WHILE MY MOMS GOT HER HUSTLE ON REAL SHIT.DIDNT WORRY BECAUSE ALL THE PIMPS AND WINEOS AND HUSLERS TOOK CARE OF YA. FOLLOW THAT.
I was only 13 and on summer vacation from school when this song was out; one of the many songs that I first heard on WFIL Radio here in Philadelphia. I just love this song.
Actually was a top 20 hit in 1971...and memories of our senior high school trip (class of 72) to...where else...but Nassau...not far from Beaufort, SC...
I remember this song coming out in 70 or 71 when I was a dumb teenager 12 or 13.. I heard it in my dads car on 93 KHJ am in Hollywood. I told my dad that they were saying Funky Nasir. The Egyptian President Nasir was in the news at that time and I thought they were singing about President Naser going Funky. Am I retarded white boy or what?
@MindMyLost -- haha funky Nasir! You're a nut! :D Remember the moon race? Now we have no way into obit and we gotta pay the Russians to get us into space. Now it's, fucking NASA, fuckin' NASA, fu...!
I was 29 years old when this song hit the airwaves, around 1976. I remember writing to Atlantic Records, asking if they could make a 650 minute version of this song.
If not for youtube and other sources of modern internet media I might not have ever heard this song again. I was about 12 years old when this song was popular. My how the world has changed. oh by the way it's snowing in Philly today and fall hasn't even set in good.
What was great about this and other 45s at the time, was that the B side was often a continuation of the longer version of the song or an instrumental version, minus the vocals, Extremely cool ! Thanks for posting!
Boy do I remember this song when I was a kid. My sister had the 45. The label was green with black letters. My sister did have good taste, come to think of it. I'm 47 and music when I was little was so much better than the top 40 stuff is now. Just my opinion.
@taffy2003 My sister also loved this record. She'd be playing it as loud as her close and play record player would go. All of us kids liked this song. I was 14 when this song came out.
Boy do I remember this song when I was a kid. My sister had the 45. The label was green with black letters. My sister did have good taste, come to think of it.
Im going way before that. Dave, if anyone can find vintage LP's its you. Look up the Big Bambo label circa 1960's, They were produced by my "uncle tom jacobs". Mom was on always on the back cover. Authentic Calypso music.
I was like 6 when I heard this on the radio. My brother and I couldn't believe the words to this song. (Of course we thought the words were a little different.)
The summer of 1971...Riverside Park in Agawam, Mass.....They used to play this song on some of the rides that summer. This always comes to mind when i hear this song. "Funky Nassau"...what a great tune...very much under-rated.
1971,high school summer session, funky nassau wafting up through the windows. How did black music go so far astray in such a short time?Of course, everything sucks today, not just black music.
mesn on FB,YT, I just had this song pop into my head, It is Bomb, I had to send it out to FaceBook, And Veda,( who will, I know, say No Way!)...I dont know how I thought of this, I do know, ItS been a long long time, and a great jam...
not all music of the new is horrible sex based crap but i do agree the best music comes from the early 1900s up till the 80's and if ya like backwords from then lol just me i like a broad range XD rare to see a younge kid into the old stuff like this good ears keep it up
this is the shit man, I remember rockin to this back in the day when this came out , wanna see ur grandma and grand pa shake a tail feather just play this tune and watch .
Damn, I haven't heard this over 30 years! I forgot about this jam after I couldn't find it on any record or cd. Who does this again? Thanks for the post whoever you are!!!!!!!!!!! Peace
Atlantic records is the shit!! Love it! From funky-de-mcfunkfunk to musical masters like Led Zeppelin. I'm a 17 year old from Wales but the 70's and 80's America was the pace to be.
If interested in more instrumental soul songs, try BOOKER T. - Hip-Hug-Her, METERS - Cissy Strut, MANU DIBANGO - Soul Makossa, CLIFF NOBLES - The Horse, HUGH MASAKELA - Grazin' In The Grass, BARKAYS - Soul Finger, YOUNG-HOLT UNLIMITED - Soulful Strut, MAR-KEYS - Last Night, NITE-LITERS - K-Jee, BILLY PRESTON - Outa Space, and MARVIN GAYE - T. Plays It Cool. There's more, but ain't enough space to name 'em all.
I find this "I'm only 14...." trend fuckin hilarious, and at the same time, fucking irritating! Shut up and LISTEN, listen good, New York you know has got a whole lot of soul, good god.
I'm glad I found this. Me and my nan thought the lyrics were "Fuckin ass hole" and we've been singing that to each other for years. I'd better let her know it's 'Funky Nassau"
I remember hearing this when i was about 10yrs. old. My mom and dad played this on the Hi-Fi a parties, when my aunt and uncle and family came over for card parties that use to last all night. Bid wiz was the thing back then. The Good old days!!!!!!!!!
First time i heard this song was in a nightclub in Derby town centre 1975 , i was 16 on a football hooligan tour with the BORO frontline? they played it loads of times in the night club, Pernod was 30p a double special offer, ive never drank it since? just heard the record first time since 1975.....It took me back to the night club straight away,i could taste the Pernod? magic.
I love this song. The 70's is still my favorite decade for music, and probably film as well. My complaint with the past decades' music is its lifelessness compared to tunes like this. Songs just drone on & on with no energy, no SOUL - like they're dead.
Keep listening to the old greatest! They have a message in there music. Plus back in those days it was about having fun and everyone loved there fellow man, peace.
Holy Moly!! I haven't heard this in decades! This is music...made with real instruments. LOVE the 70's!!!! I was a kid, but our house was always filled with music....Daddy was a musician and not a day went by without music.....cleaning the house and doin yard work with the speakers blasting the best the radio and albums had to offer.....and the 70's had tons of great music!!!! Thanks for posting this classic...Muah!!
Ahhhhhh the 70's there will never be a decade like it again....! I'm soooo glad I was there to live in it, even tho' I was a kid I can remember some things ~ people seemed so much more relaxed back then {from a kids pov}.....!
I'm only 11, and I actually been listening to music from the early 1900's to the 1980's and I perfer the music through out those 80 years than the bs they produce today. All they do is talk about sex in todays music and frankly I don't understand why a mojority of people my age listen to shit like that. It's garbage. I love Sam Cooke, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Mercer Ellington, Curtis Mayfield, The Impressions, Billy Steward, Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown, Marvin Gaye and the list goes on
u go kid. got your whole life aheada u , n just when u think u found your perfect tune, u stumble upon somethin better that blows it outa the water. never stops . just gets better..
@jessica100200 Ata girl Jessica! You'll learn sooooo much from the stories in this amazing music. Keep jammin, rockin, singin along, and groove with it. Much Luv!
@jessica100200 with you brother, although im tripple your age and double as drunk. you will have a difficult live, but keep the spirit up and prosper (40 backspace on that line :) )
@jessica100200 - Jessica you must have been on the earth before - Your amazing taste will stand you well as you swim through the shark-infested waters that we call today's music scene. You must have a very knowledgable mentor to have helped you find the right path. Keep on digging through the crates for those quality tunes.
@kevthe45man thank you, I did have a mentor, she first taught me about the sweet sounds of Sam Cooke and then Curtis Mayfield...then after that I taught myself and ever since I've loved music from the early 1900's to the late 1970's...ever since, I've hated music from that point and on.
@jessica100200 I shake your hand and send u much respect for being your young age you are and having the most amazing quality taste - I always believe it's what your parents listen to that influence you ;)
@PM1970 Thanks soo much! I actually learned about music like this all by myself. My teacher first taught me about a couple of artist and ever since, I've been obsessed with music like this.
@ahunter1003...ahhh, how old are you? Whether you're older than me or not, I bet you use the same language, everyone does. And I'm not justifying that it's right to use profanity, but that type of word usage will always be around, and who's to say it's right or wrong?
@jessica100200 .. the language may hav bn round 4ever & ever1 (most ever1) uses it but 4 a 11 yr old u should't... as old as u r as young as u r/ show respect 2 get respect. I'm glad u've an ol soul & can 'preciate the finer things n life but dont get old b4 ur time
@jessica100200 .. the language may hav bn round 4ever & ever1 (most ever1) uses it but 4 a 11 yr old u should't... as old as u r as young as u r/ show respect 2 get respect. I'm glad u've an ol soul & can 'preciate the finer things n life but dont get old b4 ur time
@ahunter1003 Like I said before, Who's to say it's right or wrong? It's a type of form of speech you use, and most people rather use it to express themselves. and that's a typo- I'm not 11, I'm 13. Still, I'm not saying it's right, because truthfully, profanity can be used in so many ways and 96.7% of the time, it is used as a form of expression. And I don't know how old you are, probably older than me but, stop...because you and me both know you use profanity. Quit being a hypocrite
@iteachvader However, there are some pieces of music from video games that I like. Only ones without words, like from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, StarFox, Pokemon, etc...

@jessica100200 - Jessica you must have been on the earth before - Your amazing taste will stand you well as you swim through the shark-infested waters that we call today's music scene. You must have a very knowledgable mentor to have helped you find the right path. Keep on digging through the crates for those quality tunes.
kevthe45man 1 year ago 6
@kevthe45man thank you, I did have a mentor, she first taught me about the sweet sounds of Sam Cooke and then Curtis Mayfield...then after that I taught myself and ever since I've loved music from the early 1900's to the late 1970's...ever since, I've hated music from that point and on.

@jessica100200 if your are only 11 you need to clean up your language... clean it up like the music you say you like is clean...
ahunter1003 10 months ago
@ahunter1003...ahhh, how old are you? Whether you're older than me or not, I bet you use the same language, everyone does. And I'm not justifying that it's right to use profanity, but that type of word usage will always be around, and who's to say it's right or wrong?
jessica100200 10 months ago
@jessica100200 .. the language may hav bn round 4ever & ever1 (most ever1) uses it but 4 a 11 yr old u should't... as old as u r as young as u r/ show respect 2 get respect. I'm glad u've an ol soul & can 'preciate the finer things n life but dont get old b4 ur time

ahunter1003 10 months ago
