That's what I did in middle school on rainy days, and it was one of the few activities that was really fun. Never an injury or fight or hurt feelings. Dodging an object is a useful skill. Better that you have practice dodging harmless balls. Then if one day someone throws rocks at you, you don't just stand there like an idiot. and don't even guard your head.
It is ridiculous now. At my nephews school, you cannot pick up snow. I don't mean making a snowball or throwing it, you can't pick it up. He got a detention for it. Sliding on the ice is also prohibited. I am not making this up.
I still go to highschool and I'm very bad at this game, so what do I see:
1. I hang in the back and don't get out until the end (same with others in my boat). Which puts those at the end in a place of power over your team (and usually they get a catch).
2. Unless a the jerk outside of class, the team is usually fine if you get hit and aren't athletic.
3. Everyone they aim for are jerks, good at sports, and/or hang out by the centerline.

Dodge ball is good, it fun, funny and great activity that I use in my martial arts program after we are done training to release and have fun. Banning dodgeball would be so dumb. It's a great sport and so many kids love it. I am a good at it and I don't do it to make other kids feel bad about themselves, I just think it is a fun sport. It is very intense and fun. Going all out and pegging people with dodgeballs is fun as hell. Catching is also fun when you catch dodgeballs to bring your team back in the game. Great comment. Total agree. Make it about having fun. I ran an afterschool martial arts program for years and much of the free time was spent playing dodgeball. And we could easily fit in 10 to 20 games an hour. With that many games it was easy for the kids not to care about winning because the next game would start in 5 minutes and there'd be another 20 games tomorrow so they got the point where they were purely having fun. And that was most important thing.
