It's a misinterpretation by the foreign press. In Brazil, this tribe has been known for 20 years. So it's not new to Brazilian government. But it's true they didn't have contact with the outside world.

And it's nothing new either. There are about 100 uncontacted tribes in Amazon. We know about them, but they are hiding from civilization. This was just one of them.

This tribe was already known, but someone advertised them as a new discovery to gain media attention worldwide and protect them. He needed to prove that they where still existing because the political leader there was denying it to continue to exploit their forest, leading the tribe to extinction.

They prepared for war by painting themselves red after the first helicopter flyby as they already had their experiences with people from the industrialized world.
