They can changed with their lipsand their tongues the velocity of the air. If the velocity is slow, the note will be low and, if the velocity of the air is fast, the note will be high. Each alphorn can play approximatively 12 notes.

it is a brass instrument, so the initial sound is produced by lip vibration of the lips and air moving the vibrations through a medium. In this case, the medium is the air inside the horn. pitches change by faster vibrations of the lips, and follow the harmonic series.
