I ROCK to this, and have always had it in my top 25 ... it was so great to see Edwin Starr perform it live on stage just a few short years ago. He still sang it with a passion -- right after he finishes the song, look at the glee and the boyish JOY on his face ... that smile is PRICELESS !!
Edwin Starr moved to England because he was tired of war and racism in the U.S.. You can hear it in his music. I remember "War" vividly for the scenes of Vietnam carnage it generated in my imagination. Powerful, his voice. Anger, and anguish. Real. Thank you.
Thanks for this video! I remember when my sister bought this song. He was so energetic. The song sounds as good as it did when he first recorded it. One of the forgotten ones by BG. He had to move to Europe (?) to get the deserved recognition, and did quite well, from what I understand.
LOVE IT! I'm hiking Mt. Whitney - the tallest peak in the 48 states - this summer, and this is the PERFECT theme song for our group of hikers! Crank it up! kathleenrockneyblog!
Edwin Starr was born in Nashville, but came to and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio when he was very young. He use to date my sister when he was in high school (East Technical) and sang with a band called the Futuretones. His birth name is Charles Hatcher. He has a sister (Patty) who still lives in Cleveland, a brother name Terry and another (the baby sibling) Angelo who played in his brother's band.
he had a heart attack, around 2003 0r 2002 around that time he was ma brothers grandfather i went to his funeral he was a great man i love him so much
He was indeed but latterly he lived near Tamworth in Staffordshire, England. He was continually popular over here, particularly amongst the Northern Soul fraternity. The Northern denotes the North of England. I saw him interviewed on local TV not long before his death (he was still performing) and he seemed like a really good guy. RIP.
I worked as a lighting tech on a few of his gigs, cliche but he was such a tremendous niceguy and when he sang his version of 'higher and higher' we just exploded with sunshine and we were professional jaded switch and fader twiddling zombies. Best gig I ever heard. RIP Ed
I agree , Benny Benjamin who was the drummer on so many of the Motown studio recordings had a very unique style that can't be copied by anyone . He had the beat !
my dad use 2 drive his tour bus around 4 him many years ago! i remember going round his castle in tamworth with my dad e was such a mint bloke! e use 2 drink cold coffee with ice cubes in il neva 4 get him leg in his own rights

I agree with you on Edwin Starr. He's incredible. I'm not sure about Reo Speedwagon. Hits? plenty. But long lasting quality? Don't know. I guess time will tell. Prefer Little Feat, Ambrosia..........
Question, Does anyone ever place the dates on these videos? WHAT WAS THE YEAR?!!!! WHERE DID THIS TAKE PLACE?!!!! FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!! When I a child I played this song to death! Drove my parents crazy. lol
I thank you dearly BUT!!! the song came out in 1969 when I was driving my parents crazy. This video is recent. So AGAIN to anyone out there when did the above performance take place. Thank for trying. Peace
i ture starr,he made my radio happy,he once walked "25 miles"to make contact with his fans,he was clean, his music brings out the beast in me,in the afternoon sunshine he we met mr davenport +mr james
what a song, i saw him 5 times all on scooter rallies over the 80s and early 90s and was looking forward to seeing him at the isle o man lcgb rally when i heard he had died, totally mortified, just loved this fella's music. Went anyway and saw his brother who stood in for him and the atmosphere was electric. RIP edwin, to me! you! are the godfather of soul

If you're not tapping your foot and shakin' your butt to this song----call the coroner because you're most likely dead.
