  • Wow!

  • it isnt black ink.. why does everyone say this? its a purple polymer added to the polypropylene as it leaves the hopper..

  • I live around Springfield Oregon, but I never knew this was here. huh.

  • The white ninjas that never sleep...

  • I found someone on Youtube had a copy of Crash Bandicoot 2 but the disc was full of color while mine was only silver, does anyone know if theres some reason or if it's because they were sold in different regions

  • @JakubTilecky Greatest hits version.

  • @fonarte o i see, didnt know that

  • @JakubTilecky yeah, when I was younger I didn't know either.

The only things you need to remember is that if it has a Green label on the CD case, it's a Greatest Hits version(which is basically the same as the Nintendo Players Choice series on the NES , SNES, N64 and so on)

The CD will either be Silver with black print, or a solid Matte Black disc with White Print.

  • @fonarte i do not remember what my case looked like because it disappeared somewhere but that is good to know

  • @JakubTilecky to je platium verze, melo by to tam bejt napsaný

  • @karelpipa ok thanks, I think you're right

  • i will buy this plant and make the old ps1 games again

  • Why did they get rid of the black ink?

  • @lb8068 They used blue ink on PS2 CDs, I think the Ink interfered with the lazer on DVD because the "tracks" on DVDs are coiled much tighter so it's why DVDs are always silver. But if you ever look at a DVDs silver side, there should be 6 PS logos refrecting off the back so you know it's authentic.

  • @lb8068 Cause it's a waste of money.

  • @dodgesxt So you suffer from Schizophrenia, not a big problem. I'm used to working with patients with various mental disorders. I have the gasoline, candle and tnt already set up. Just need some advice for the costumes; superheroes???

  • @dodgesxt Great! I have a SUV with a full tank ready for use. Tell me where and when to pick you up!

  • @dodgesxt am I too late for the raid?

  • @dodgesxt Yes. At the base of it is the digital medium itself where every copy looks like an original, of those that can be copied. Of course, stealing analogue material was also done. But it didn't kill an entire industry.

Makes me want to go back to writing books. Only this next time, I'll find a cheaper way to bind my own books.

Does this thievery also affect any of your creative content, assuming you do also create?

  • @dodgesxt Wait till March 2011. Sony is closing their New Jersey CD making plant in March. That leaves the Terra Haute Indiana plant for CD making. And DVDs are down 13 percent.

This is all thanks to Ipod where people steal music off the web and from hard copy CDs.

  • very, very hi tec indeed! Sony make a quality product.

  • I have that demo disk shown being made, pretty awesome. Ps1 will always be my favorite console of all time, it's too bad I find myself playing on xbox more nowadays..

  • 0 people hate PS1 (Judging by the Dislieks hehe!)

Why did they stop making them black for PS2? And those robots driving about are awesome!

  • What was the game they were printing?

  • @ScrewAttackEurope PowerSlave

  • @ScrewAttackEurope looked like playstation underground magazine cd to me

  • 1:37 i have 2 of those lol!

  • Ps1

  • I think the "illegal copying" thing means that if someone were to sell a pirated game, it would be easily identifiable as fake.

  • @youcantubeittoo

The color did nothing to change the refractive properties of the disc as far as the read head was concerned instead it was to allow a consumer to tell if they were buying a bootleg copy.

The actual copy protection was pretty simple yet effective for the time an original disc would have some of the sectors contain a zeroised EDC/ECC checksum normally these are never zero.

  • And I bet they just treat their employes like scum and dont pay em shit while at the same time making billions for the greedy corporate execs. Classic business.

  • @Beezy2127 yeah, just like walmart

  • If it wasn't for illegal disk copying, we wouldn't still be able to play Rival schools anymore; Not even on out PSPs due to Capcom not being able to get the rights to it anymore.

  • that is impressive!

  • you dont make how the blu-rays even made?

  • @kaiokendo

Grammar; USE IT UNDERSTANDABLY OR NO ONE WILL ANSWER YOU!

  • @Berniebud i have say if they have a video where it show how the blu rays are made

  • Well, what they meant by that is that the CD looks distinctly different from a bootlegged copy because they added black dye to the disc. You may be able to get CDR's with black bottoms today, but back then, no.

  • Thanks a lot for allowing us to get those incredible insights into the history of the good old PlayStation.

You guys are doing a great job with this.

  • ''Helps from illegal copying'' LOOOOL Yea right

  • Wow I have 2 Blue Bottoms: Crash:WOC And Harry Potter And the Chamber OF Secrets. But Belive It Or Not I Put In MY Harry Potter 2 Disk In My PS1 Because It Said Compact Disc Because It Got A Disk Read Error

  • I remember the playstation underground. Makes me wish I signed up

  • so thats were ps1 games come from so now at that place do they do PS3 games now there or x box

  • Thanks so much! I saw this video a long time ago... I'm so happy to see its not lost.

  • cool

  • The black stuff they put on the discs doesn't make it any harder to copy the disc for piracy. But its cool and makes ps games look unic and sexy.

I wonder why the very first PS2 games had that blue stuff on the disc? Its not anymore in use.

  • The Blue disks are Cd-Rom games and Silveris DVD-Rom

  • But... My Crash bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex game has blue in it. ANd it is definetly a DVD. Or is it?

  • It isn't, it's on the old PS1 format, according to tips and tricks (I have the issue where that question was answered in the letters to the editors section but it may take me a while to find it again).

Such a shame because Wrath of Cortex had better graphics and an annoying load time and I bet if they used the DVD format the loading time would've been a lot less.

  • Ah yes WOC is a CD, I checked it and I was shocked. Kinda funny they still could make such a long game into a cd. Would be better if itd be DVD, with more levels and stuff in there.

And other thing, I think its kinda boring that ps2 dvd's are just white/silver on the reading bottom. They couldve been black too... If its possible on dvd technology.

  • according to tips and tricks those discs still used the PS1 format.

  • 1994 - Born of the 8th wonder of the world.

Long live Sony. Ken Kutaragi was a mastermind.

  • Amazing, Interesting and to old :D

    Great vid.

  • He kinda sounds like the newest Sonic the Hedgehog VA...

  • wow this is old

  • Nice.

  • Cool I want to work there, to get the Games cheaper than others... maybe^^

  • playstation underground still remains but it totally online and nothing like it was.

  • funny I have Memorex CDR with the black coding lol

  • lol yea funny it took them a year or 2 till they could make them like playstation's.

Just say'n its easy to copy some one else harder to create.

  • Well, making the disc "black" (or translucent dark purple) doesn't protect the disc from piracy at all.

All it does is indicate that the disc is a genuine copy, but as Memorex proved, it's an identifying feature that can be easily copied (all you do is add the right ratio of colored polycarbonate pellets to the clear pellets).

At that point, the only way to tell is by checking the disc's mint markings for DADC pressing codes and/or an IFPI SID, which pirate discs and burned copies won't have.

  • I wasnt saying anything about copying the data just ment making black disks. It wasnt for a while that other companys started making the black disks.

  • From wikipedia

"Anyone seeking to create copies of games that would work correctly faced several issues at the time, as the discs that were produced by Sony were designed to be difficult to copy — and impossible to copy on recordable media. Discs were manufactured with a black-colored plastic, transparent only to the infrared radiation used by the CD-ROM drive's laser. This was found to offer little protection."

They added other things like dead code and areas too. Wiki it for the rest.

  • That's really nonsense. The black-colored plastic is transparent to *every* CD-ROM drive's laser, as they all use the same wavelength anyway. It's a rumor, probably spread by some magazine back in the days, that this was for copy protection. If there was a reason for Sony to do this at all, and not just to give the discs a special look, then it's UV protection.

  • I wonder what that building is used for now?

"This protects the disc from illegal copying"

    Haha yeah that worked!

  • well when this came out, cd burners were like oled tvs(ultra thin tvs that rich people have in thir bathroom) nobody had disc burners!

the black plastic was like if a guy was selling fake copies the person purchasing would open it up and see wheter or not it was bootlegged

  • Awesome.

  • Terre Haute IN. is where im from

    FATBOY DAN Here

  • PlayStation Museum rocks, I love seeing all these old PS1 artifacts! :3

  • Hey, Interactive Sampler 3, I have it. :D

  • I hate to tell them but the discs being black has nothing to do with copy protection, if that were the fact then black cd-r would be able to boot on an unmodded system.

Does anyone know what game that was in the long case at the end?

  • Actually, you're wrong. :D

The reason Playstation 1 discs were coloured black was copyright protection. They spent ridiculous amounts of money to figure out how to make them and a laser that read them... however... it took weeks to crack and find a way around.

Also, extra code was around the edge of the disc to stop copyright protection, by using a sharpie they got around this(May have been PS2)

    The more you know!

  • I know Sega Saturn discs have code on the edge of the discs, but I have never heard of a sony disc have that feature.

If simple color of the discs copy protects them, then answer me this, why can a cd-rom drive still make an iso of a disc, shouldnt the magical color keep it from doing that? Also why cant a disc just be burned on a black cd-r and be read, if color were the protection that would be possible.

Playstation protection is a matter or bad sectors in the data, reconized by PS1

  • I never had any problem copying those discs...

  • i think the color is from when people went into a store(or broke collage kids on the subway) and opened up the box, theyd see that

  • Cool! But why did they stop making the bottom of the disc black for the PS2?

  • they made some blue instead =P

  • Umm..Damn your a retard! Don't you know that PS2 games were made on DVD layer?! Okay then

    Are DVD's black?! Rofl

  • actualy blue ps2 disks were cd ps2 games like leggo starwars the first one it said on the box compact disk (cd) however a game like ratchet and clank had a clear disk and said dvd. so not all ps2 games were made on dvd.

  • cool

  • SONY=GODLY

  • @sgtpumkin123 in some ways yes in others no, by no i mean... PS2 killed off the Dreamcast!!!

  • @sgtpumkin123 2 years later and the disks begin to oxidize.

  • cool man.

playstation has always been the best.

The black discs were so cool at the time.

although i liked the ps2-cd (not the boring dvd)roms even better. The purple/blue shining was out of this world!

  • Woah, INTERESTING! Pretty neat.

  • fekkin awesome.

  • interesting stuff right here. x]

  • Hell yeah, it is!
