Any good scope should be fine. If it throws your scope off... get a new scope.
But remember when using any sort of sled. Don't put a hundred pounds on it. You can crack the stock of your gun because the energy has to go somewhere.
As for the Caldwell Lead Sled... I was in the market for another, and just ordered one online. :)
The energy travels tthrough the frame into an upward movement at the tray which holds the weight. To ensure to maximum energy transfer, keep the buttstock firmly seated against the back of the rear rest.
You can use lead shot, sand, or any other material you prefer. I couldn't speak specifically to mortar sand, but I don't see why that wouldn't work. Please note the weight bags are sold separately.
Why in the world would you need a lead-sled for a .223 Remington or similarly weak round? You will never learn good shooting habits if you can't even shoot an AR-15 without a recoil absorption device.
Agreed, I might get one for sighting in. I`m not the best shooter out there so it would be nice to save a few rounds while sighting in a scope to make sure the rifle is steady
I agree. This is a good tool to have to sight in a rifle or for people who hand load. But I don't think this is a good device to introduce people to shooting. A person should start with small caliber rifles like the .22, .223, etc. and develop good habits with those rifles. Then slowly work up; .270,6.5x55,.308, .30-06. And should stop there. Most new hunters don't need anything bigger; they'll never go to Africa w/ a .416 when they are new to the sport. Nevertheless, a nice device to have!
Just got my Sled in last week and assembled myself.Went together easy. Attempted to sight in my new H&R Buffalo Classic in 45-70 w/ metal butt plate. The result after 3 shots was a cracked stock after the metal plate cut thru the Caldwell pad on the rear rest. Slightly ticked but learned you can't shoot without more pad added...
Why does the kid shoot with his mouth open? He's obviously waiting for a dick to be put in it.

How much abuse does the internals of your gun/scope take while using the "Lead Sled"??? Where does the energy go??? It is absorbed where???

Recoil is what makes shooting what it is. What fun is it if every gun, even the biggest magnums only kick like a .22LR.

For the AR-15, I would recommend the Lead Sled DFT. The dual frame allows room for the extended magazine.

What do you weight it down with? Where do you get whatever it is in those bags? Could you use mortar sand?

Will this work with an AR-15?
