  • sentimental old man

  • At 2:48 church bells start ringing.

  • Watch that beginning. Perfect.

  • If ever an alien lifeform comes to visit this screwed up planet....

This is what human emotion is all about, and there is NOTHING more to add.

  • A musical gem! Thank you xj808 for the upload

  • like wine...

  • Some people are coughing in the beat of the piece - bravo !!!

  • He brings out the strings in the string-percusive piano. I love the way he can play 3 notes and no note is the same color, it constantly changes. Kudos to Horowitz for raising this song from a lovely tune to poetry. He has it sounding like a brook in the woods in a purple midnight.

  • One of a kind. Thank heavens we have many recordings. I get goosebumps every time....

  • Amazing his technique is!..notice how flat he keeps his wrist yet he still has great control over the dynamics!..a legend at his best!..if I learned this song this would be i would play it at this tempo love it

  • At 5:25 and following. WOW!

  • Fantastic playing. In Horowitz's hands this sounds lke vocal music

    on the 88.

    .

xj808- Thank you so much for posting/

    Regards-John

  • An unmatched interpretation in my view. His control of the various "voices" in the music is simply incredible.

  • What beauty Schubert gave us and Horowitz showed us.

  • Althought I've been playing this piece for quite some time.... but I'll never make it sound more than 50 % of his... so delicate, so peaceful..

  • As much as I love horowitz's playing. I think Brendel does a better job on this peice than horowitz does.

  • Forget all the technical fireworks which this legendary pianist could wow audiences with. It's serenely beautiful playing like this which on occasions he produced that truly stays in the memory.

  • The version here:

    youtube.com/watch?v=FxhbAGwEYGQ is in sync

  • Class act!

  • Out of sync or not, this is masterful.

  • Horowitz was the best!...no doubt about that!..this vid is out of sync or dubbed sadly...anyway two great masters the young schubert and mature awesomely skilled & experienced Horowitz....most of us will live and die our lives without much fuss or episode...after we are gone few will ever remember us, life is short...so let us all enjoy these two great musical minds and lets be grateful people like Schubert and Horowitz ever existed...peace and love to you all you tube people and humanity..x

  • oh, come on! 46 dislikes?!?! how dare you!

  • @YuukakuAyumi Dont bother some people are just completely retarded and have no business being in the music world. Probably just jealous they'll never even come close to Horowitz.

  • @delmonaco21 That`s right! But why they still watch the video if they don`t like it? I don`t get it! (sorry...I got a bit annoyed :D...and I have reasons for that...) I just hate the haters!!

  • makes me feel like playing in the grass when I was little or walking in the shade of trees in a calm place... just lovely :)

  • His Schumann is played beautifully and always makes me feel in a relaxwd calm manner totally absorbed by his playing.

  • i can't describe it and never have able to. Horowitz' performances always make me feel relaxed and in a calm state of being even though some of his performances are not how i would like to here them being played. I often hear better performances but they seldom have the effect on me as Horowitz' performances do.

  • Brendel's version is better.

  • church bells lol

  • "God's favorite version"

  • I've been listening to this in headphones and I think I can hear churchbells in the background...?

  • I LOVE you Dr. Horowitz! You're in my heart forever.

  • I can feel the different colour of music....purple, pink.....it's just like a painting!

  • @gnuhctube

Ok - that´s fine, but I think there are more important things behind and in the music than colours - sorry.

  • Great moment

  • Anyone else find it sad how Bieber, Gaga, Minaj have hundreds of millions of views, and this masterpiece has only 750k? ...Sigh...

  • Amazing just Amazing.

  • Thats y i am here. Reliving the moment.. :-(

  • Played this song yesterday mourning on the church piano for a sister i really liked and hoped to get to know. She loved it and the other schubert impromptus i played. I later saw her with a guy whom she introduced to me as her boyfriend. I was and still am crushed.

  • Pure genius...nobody will ever play it better.

Berlin and Vienna best concerts of Horowitz in the 80s.

  • Pure genius...nobody will ever play it better.

  • This is the kind of music that sets Russian music apart from American music aswell as what has earned the Russians being know for their talent for the arts, the most beautiful piece I've heard for piano yet

  • Dang those bells, or whatever they are in the background are really annoying. Maybe I'm hearing things..

  • This is the best version on youtube. I can really feel the song

  • I love the way Horowitz feels music and shares it with the world.

  • AFTER 20 SECONDS I HAVE TO REPEAT THE VIDEO, I JUST CANT BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF BEAUTY.

  • ive started playing the pain at 16, right now im 18 and grade 4...maybe one day i might be able to play

  • to : organman52. I stuggle with my piano, no idea how to operate an organ, no more than I can make sense of your comment. Please illucidate me. William

  • Bravo (=

  • @malpal314 And where does the music indicate that all this nonsense is to take place?

  • I love how Horowitz takes his time and brings out the harmonies...

  • ... Sublime...

  • I saw Horowitz at Yale in the 80's...Sunday afternoon...fabulous performance. If I could relive just 3 days of my life, the would be one of the 3.

  • ow my .. while I listing this ... I hear also the sound of a summer rain .... I smell that most nicest smell you can imagine .. the summer .. and the rain ... and in the background I hear the power of thunder .. and then here, horowitz playing this amazing romantic piece ... this is so .. emotional right now .. I cry ... yes I do ......

Mr, Horowitz.. you are a pure legend, a lord, a real real person ... thank you for your estate you give to us all ... we are for ever gratefull for that ...

  • @lespaulcustomblack

    lol musical illiterate alert!

  • @lespaulcustomblack No its not.

  • @lespaulcustomblack facepalm. Please think a little before you write.

  • love it, I'm crying and all

  • One day I am going to play this,,,,

  • super.

  • Why sound and video are not together at all ?

  • Magia pura!!

  • How can someone not like this?

  • I love it, how it seems that he just rests his hands on the keys and music happens.

  • I don't understand, why always taunting those who dislike classical music videos?

This is not a crime, it's normal that out of the hundred of thousands of people who watch a video, some could dislike it..

The worst thing is that those who do that always use a pun or hyperbolic humor that isn't even funny.

  • Anybody hear the church bells @2.55 ?

    Headphones help...

  • @FreddieSausage you are right haha i heard them to

  • Am I the only one who heard strings at 1:33..?

  • out of sync...a lot...

  • It's hard to believe, that a human being has the capacity to write something so incredibly beautiful. Schubert was so awesome.

  • I must have a severe processing disorder as well because I see his fingers move and produce different notes than those actually played. Auditory cortex incoordination or simple shift of the sound track ? Going to see a neurologist tomorrow.

  • imbattibile

  • to play this piece is rather difficult, though its melody is so simple, but it paves way to an exceedingly massive kinds of interpretations. of all those , i enjoy most with horowitz style, he play it with a slow steady speed, bringing out a peaceful and demure air. i think only those who has the most delicate heart can interpret this piece to the most sensational extent.

  • SO GOOD SO SO GOOD

    太美了 好舒服 好放鬆 ㄅㄦ棒 !

  • I was 18 when i heard it, and to this day,i am 30 now, but i still enjoy as i did back then. Listening to this, makes me feel, that i must hold my love's hand or hold her in my arms, and we take a slow walk in the moonlight. Its a great romantic piece according to me, and a very sweet one. How fascinating Schubert was, that he never married, because, his marraige could influence his music. Good Lord! What sacrifice. He may not be as popular as Mozart was, but still he is one of the greats.Shalom

  • 點解可以唔洗點郁地彈出咁既速度

  • I love he's face at the end , he's like '' Yeah , Did you see it ? ''

  • Both Schubert and Horowitz are geniuses.

  • Go listen to this piece from other Pianists... Schubert might be amazing, BUT Horowitz is pretty amazing too!

  • achingly beautiful

  • So moving as to break the heart. #(Re)MakingLove

  • Gorgeous performance, but audio is WAY behind video. Can't you fix it?

  • I so agree with MegaRobson. This man has heaven in his hands...

  • Magnífico!

  • que color!

  • Is it the truth that we have to reach this age and have such a peaceful heart...then we're able to play as him?

  • Interpretation of Horowitz are ridiculous, I mean, so perfect, i can't believe it, its impossible someone play so beatiful

  • The video's out of synch with the audio. Who cares? Close your eyes and drink it in with your ears!

  • The video is not lined up with the audio...

  • Comment removed

  • only Horowitz could get away with changing the notes like that :)

  • he was one of the best pianists ever but I still don't sense as much feeling in this one as in Brendel's

  • It's great, but Brendel's is still the best one.

  • at 4.02 min I hear church bells

    LoL

  • @nilsvgrevenbroek You're over a minute late...they're kicking off @2.55 !

  • @FreddieSausage your right hahah. nice one! greetz

  • @frkhar: it is Schubert's music, and Horowitz is the pianist who is playing his piece. You can't simply, judge whether who's better, everyone has their own specific touch and style on the piano. It's like comparing who's better at cooking - one chef might not have the desired taste you want, but other people prefer him/her over your specific taste needs.

  • This is not Schubert.....Alfred Brendel's is better!

  • @frkhar of course its not schubert ;) its Horowitz :P

  • wonderfull how his hands caress the instrument..

  • What a stud.

  • it's a great song and a great pianist... it would be great if the music matched the video though.

  • Horowitz makes me feel how wonderful it is to be alive. Magical.

  • this was just beautiful

  • i love the 6 finger version for gattaca

  • majster je majster.........

  • beautiful

  • Schubert is amazing!

  • @x1z3c7 and so was Horowitz :)

  • I thought he was doing the most amazing job of giving the illusion he was not playing what it sounded like he was playing..Then I realized that the audience did an equally good job of clapping without making any sound either.

  • I thought he was doing the most amazing job of giving the illusion he was not playing what it sounded like he was playing.... then I realized it was out of sync.

  • was this in HD ? :P

  • This is what I call classical music. It is wonderful!

  • Out of synch

  • Schubert's compositions are so very song like. Fantastic.

  • Horowitz was just one step below God... - His way of playing is awesome...

  • This is utterly exquisite. The phrasings within phrasings tug at ones chest.

  • the audio isn't synched up quite right....but the audio is still good... thanks

  • creo que horowitz es el mayor interprete de los clásicos mas difíciles, hay otros buenos pianistas pero el es el maestro, que bueno seria si se levantaran mas pianistas de esta talla aunque quizás fue único-.

  • I was there and can´t forget that amazing evening...

  • @jerbiebarb People like me? Well, if you want to know, I can actually analyse the difference since I am in my final year of my music degree and have been playing music for over 12 years now. If you want to listen to big bass beats carry on listening to Bieber who has a team of producers, managers and sound engineers behind him, and I will listen to Schubert with his honest and beautiful tones and colours that he can create from one instrument while Bieber has to use synth and other instruments.

  • Horowitz has more tonal color, dynamic nuance and piano singing in this glorious piece than many pianists get in 10 years.

When Horowitz played Schubert, VH was also a magnificient lieder singer.

  • This is spectacular, but the sound track does not match the video. While I love this piece and he is a true artist, it would be lovely if the hands and the music were in sync.

  • the way his hands just fall so gracefully on each of those keys is just majical to watch! the chord progression is just literally music to the ears! wow...wishing i could play like this isnt even enough he is amazing and so was Schubert!

  • @dmanxful What's so amazing is how well he plays considering how terrible his form is, I guess it was thanks to his long fingers.

  • Pardon my ignorance, but why does he look over the audience before he plays?

  • @Lisztman88 Horowitz had an immense amount of stage fright that he was never able to overcome, sometimes he would barely be able to take the stage.

  • why did someone rate this negative?

  • wish the video was in synch with the soundtrack

  • wish the video was in synch with the soundtrack

  • video awfully lags the music

  • My Heros! Vladamir Horowitz, Carl Sagan, James Randi

  • Habe ich richtig gehört?? Sind die Glocken von Stephansdom dahinten?? Oh...Gott...Schubert und Stephansdom...schöne Wien!!

  • When one hears a piano played like this, it makes one wish that the person playing it could live forever rather than be deprived of such a magnificent talent! Such is the cruely of life that this sadly cannot be so and even legends like the late great Horowitz are sadly no longer with us!

  • :)

  • oohhhh, i love schubert. even as a little kid, it would lull me to sleep. I hope to learn a schubert piece for my mom and dad's wedding (my mom loves the piano)

  • really great;he has a bitter sonority; i hear all of the parts of this music clearly.

  • Where is the 'remove comments' button? I just want to listen to the exquisite music, not be disturbed by the petty bickering.

  • The MASTER! Its so easy for him he could play it in his sleep. I don't know exactly how to express how I feel about him but it falls somewhere between extreme admiration and a healthy dose of jealousy. LOL. We should all play HALF as well as Horowitz....and have his humility. He just loved the music and it showed through in the expressiveness of his playing.

  • Sync is adjustable...download the clip using DownloadHelper (Firefox) and playback in the VLC player, using (menu) Tools (choice) Track Syncronization (choice) Adjust audio ahead of video, to a value of MINUS 3.1 secs.

  • Around 1:40 it's already noticably out of sync , yes.

  • Re: Synchronicity. After hearing this D899 No3 a few times I noticed the video is out of synch with the sound. I see a left hand trill (or tremolo) visually but it's a few seconds later that the sound is actually heard. It seems to be that way throughout the entire piece. Anyways, it's beautiful playing all the same. Thanks for posting it.

  • 38 people have severe auditory processing disorder~

  • @legopiano -.-''

  • @legopiano Love your comment! Could not have said that better myself! This is HOROWITZ people! The best pianist that has ever graced a stage.

  • @legopiano now 40

  • 43 people!

  • @legopiano I must have a severe processing disorder as well because I see his fingers move and produce different notes than those actually played. Auditory cortex incoordination or simple shift of the sound track ? Going to see a neurologist tomorrow.

  • Did not know there was video of Horowitz playing this! But for me the video and audio is out of sync... Can you correct for that and repost?

  • How is possible he changes the color with so much facility ? Looks so easily...Amazing...

  • it's impossible to play better than this

  • Muy bien!

  • Fantastico

  • For me this started off as background within 30 secs I was listening and now its finnished I have no idea what I was doing before - do I care? No I do not.

The playing was so beautiful . Did I watch the video? No I did not.

Did I hear the beautiful phrasing of the music? Yes I did.

Am I going to listen to this again and again and again. Oh yes I am. What ever it was I was doing before can wait.

Will I hear this music in my sleep to nite? Yes.

  • wow his hands are floating!

  • is it just me or is the audio and video out of synch? either that or he is faking it jessica simpson style

  • il y a un décalage entre l'image et le son qui est gênant.

  • absolutly amazing

the only critizism, the churchbells in the back are little annoying

  • When I hear him play, it seems to me, that he is not from this world.

  • That's some amazing pedal work!

  • He smiles so nicely when taking the applause. He must have known that he had just rendered a historical performance of Schubert music.

  • Fantastic~

  • the performance is masterful.

does anybody else get horribly thrown off by the audio and video being out of sync?

  • Horowitz did it uniquely.

  • Most players are very worried about about the rhythm. Rhythm is the primary thing in music and it must be felt in certain pieces. The time of music is different from the time on the clock, it's the time of our emotional side, each note with its expression has different times in different phrases.

  • I am not worthy to even comment on something so other-worldly.

  • F-ing awesome! So going into my favs!
