He brings out the strings in the string-percusive piano. I love the way he can play 3 notes and no note is the same color, it constantly changes. Kudos to Horowitz for raising this song from a lovely tune to poetry. He has it sounding like a brook in the woods in a purple midnight.
Amazing his technique is!..notice how flat he keeps his wrist yet he still has great control over the dynamics!..a legend at his best!..if I learned this song this would be i would play it at this tempo love it
Forget all the technical fireworks which this legendary pianist could wow audiences with. It's serenely beautiful playing like this which on occasions he produced that truly stays in the memory.
Great pianists - Cherkassky (e.g. Le Cygne) or Cortot (e.g. Litanei) and a few others were inimitably supreme in songful phrasing. Maestro Horowitz, in this work and others like Schubert's Standchen, Liszt's Consolation #3, and Mozart's B minor Adagio, communes with Divinity - truly a prayer! Opportunity to hear this kind of playing leaves receptive listeners with a blessing.
Horowitz was the best!...no doubt about that!..this vid is out of sync or dubbed sadly...anyway two great masters the young schubert and mature awesomely skilled & experienced Horowitz....most of us will live and die our lives without much fuss or episode...after we are gone few will ever remember us, life is short...so let us all enjoy these two great musical minds and lets be grateful people like Schubert and Horowitz ever existed...peace and love to you all you tube people and humanity..x
@YuukakuAyumi Dont bother some people are just completely retarded and have no business being in the music world. Probably just jealous they'll never even come close to Horowitz.

ow my .. while I listing this ... I hear also the sound of a summer rain .... I smell that most nicest smell you can imagine .. the summer .. and the rain ... and in the background I hear the power of thunder .. and then here, horowitz playing this amazing romantic piece ... this is so .. emotional right now .. I cry ... yes I do ......
Mr, Horowitz.. you are a pure legend, a lord, a real real person ... thank you for your estate you give to us all ... we are for ever gratefull for that ...
I must have a severe processing disorder as well because I see his fingers move and produce different notes than those actually played. Auditory cortex incoordination or simple shift of the sound track ? Going to see a neurologist tomorrow.
to play this piece is rather difficult, though its melody is so simple, but it paves way to an exceedingly massive kinds of interpretations. of all those , i enjoy most with horowitz style, he play it with a slow steady speed, bringing out a peaceful and demure air. i think only those who has the most delicate heart can interpret this piece to the most sensational extent.
I was 18 when i heard it, and to this day,i am 30 now, but i still enjoy as i did back then. Listening to this, makes me feel, that i must hold my love's hand or hold her in my arms, and we take a slow walk in the moonlight. Its a great romantic piece according to me, and a very sweet one. How fascinating Schubert was, that he never married, because, his marraige could influence his music. Good Lord! What sacrifice. He may not be as popular as Mozart was, but still he is one of the greats.Shalom
@frkhar: it is Schubert's music, and Horowitz is the pianist who is playing his piece. You can't simply, judge whether who's better, everyone has their own specific touch and style on the piano. It's like comparing who's better at cooking - one chef might not have the desired taste you want, but other people prefer him/her over your specific taste needs.
I thought he was doing the most amazing job of giving the illusion he was not playing what it sounded like he was playing..Then I realized that the audience did an equally good job of clapping without making any sound either.

@jerbiebarb People like me? Well, if you want to know, I can actually analyse the difference since I am in my final year of my music degree and have been playing music for over 12 years now. If you want to listen to big bass beats carry on listening to Bieber who has a team of producers, managers and sound engineers behind him, and I will listen to Schubert with his honest and beautiful tones and colours that he can create from one instrument while Bieber has to use synth and other instruments.
This is spectacular, but the sound track does not match the video. While I love this piece and he is a true artist, it would be lovely if the hands and the music were in sync.
the way his hands just fall so gracefully on each of those keys is just majical to watch! the chord progression is just literally music to the ears! wow...wishing i could play like this isnt even enough he is amazing and so was Schubert!
When one hears a piano played like this, it makes one wish that the person playing it could live forever rather than be deprived of such a magnificent talent! Such is the cruely of life that this sadly cannot be so and even legends like the late great Horowitz are sadly no longer with us!

Re: Synchronicity. After hearing this D899 No3 a few times I noticed the video is out of synch with the sound. I see a left hand trill (or tremolo) visually but it's a few seconds later that the sound is actually heard. It seems to be that way throughout the entire piece. Anyways, it's beautiful playing all the same. Thanks for posting it.
@legopiano I must have a severe processing disorder as well because I see his fingers move and produce different notes than those actually played. Auditory cortex incoordination or simple shift of the sound track ? Going to see a neurologist tomorrow.
For me this started off as background within 30 secs I was listening and now its finnished I have no idea what I was doing before - do I care? No I do not.
The playing was so beautiful . Did I watch the video? No I did not.
Did I hear the beautiful phrasing of the music? Yes I did.
Am I going to listen to this again and again and again. Oh yes I am. What ever it was I was doing before can wait.
Most players are very worried about about the rhythm. Rhythm is the primary thing in music and it must be felt in certain pieces. The time of music is different from the time on the clock, it's the time of our emotional side, each note with its expression has different times in different phrases.

This is not a crime, it's normal that out of the hundred of thousands of people who watch a video, some could dislike it..

Around 1:40 it's already noticably out of sync , yes.

Did not know there was video of Horowitz playing this! But for me the video and audio is out of sync... Can you correct for that and repost?

He smiles so nicely when taking the applause. He must have known that he had just rendered a historical performance of Schubert music.

does anybody else get horribly thrown off by the audio and video being out of sync?

Horowitz did it uniquely.

Most players are very worried about about the rhythm. Rhythm is the primary thing in music and it must be felt in certain pieces. The time of music is different from the time on the clock, it's the time of our emotional side, each note with its expression has different times in different phrases.

I am not worthy to even comment on something so other-worldly.
